Sunday November 18, 2018 | Kick-off: 2pm | Gower Park, Hamilton
Jaz’s Jabber
Welcome to Head Coach and fellow WDO Emma Evans, along with the Capital Football squad and management for today’s National Women’s League clash at Gower Park. The past couple of weeks have seen some hiccups, which have been out of our control. Firstly, there were some issues during the week which led to this match being played on Sunday as opposed to our preferred option of Saturday. While this was out of our control, we’d still like to apologise to our fans if this has affected your opportunity to make it along and support the team today. Secondly, like many teams in this summer’s NWL, we’ve been hit by international call-ups. For us, that doesn’t only include players, though. Head coach, Michael Mayne, and goalkeeper coach, Max Tommy, are currently in Uruguay with the New Zealand U17 women’s team, along with three of our playing squad - Kelli Brown, Grace Wisnewski and Georgia Candy. While these call-ups are disruptive to our campaign, it’s also great to see
there’s a pathway from local football to the international stage for coaches as well as players. In Michael’s absence today, as well as that of Simon Tyndell (who has family commitments in Australia until the end of December) I will be acting as head coach and am delighted to have the experience of Roger Wilkinson beside me on the bench. While we could look for the easy way out, make excuses and blame the disruptions, that’s not what WaiBOP is about. The commitment from the squad this week has been exceptional with everyone in attendance and putting in the graft to get the results we crave. I feel like, in a sense, Capital are our secret rivals. They have broken our hearts not once, but twice, recently in the dying minutes of games. There was this year’s reverse fixture, where a Kelli Brown goal had us 1-0 up until the 89th minute, before Capital popped two past us in the dying minutes. There was also the pre-final in 2016 where we were 2-1 up against ten players. Capital clawed one back in the 96th minute and went on to beat us on penalties. We don’t want to be heartbroken again. We want to go out there and show our fans what we are made of. We’ve used as fuel those previous encounters to ensure we are well and truly up for the battle ahead. Third time lucky? No. It won’t be luck. It’ll be because we have put in a solid, consistent performance for 90 minutes. If we can do that, I think we can gain the three points today. National Women’s League Round 10 Defending champions Auckland and 2015 winners the Northern Lights have both taken significant steps towards a spot in the National Women’s League final after earning crucial wins in the latest round. The pair are fighting it out for the right to have a crack at the title against Canterbury United Pride, who remain on track to claim the minor premiership and host the final after notching another comprehensive victory. The news isn’t as positive for Capital, whose chances of making it into the top two were dealt a near fatal blow by Northern, while Southern United’s hopes are in tatters after they failed to take anything from their trip to Auckland. Much of the attention was focused on the match of the week at McFetridge Park on Auckland’s North Shore though as Northern hosted Capital in a real six-pointer. Capital needed to take maximum reward from their visit to the big smoke and appeared capable of doing so after an impressive display in the first half. The Lights had taken an early lead through a sensational long-range volley from former Football Fern Kate Loye but Capital were back on level terms mid-way through the half when golden boot leader Sarah Gregorius struck her eighth goal of the season with a composed finish. But the game changed in the second half as Northern had more
joy stretching the Capital defence and went in front just before the hour when Ava Pritchard burst onto a perfectly-placed through ball from Jane Barnett and prodded it home at the second attempt. The lead was short-lived though, Capital immediately breaking forward and equalising through a Danielle Ohlsson screamer as an afternoon of stunning finishes continued. The next goal that arrived was again of the top-drawer variety, Barnett going from provider to scorer by latching onto a dinked ball from Nicole Stratford and volleying it past Capital goalkeeper Courtney Norman. The celebrations had barely subsided by the time Northern had another just seconds later, Pritchard again racing clear to wrap up a thrilling 4-2 win. Northern’s three points put pressure on neighbours Auckland to match that showing across town at McLennan Park and they duly obliged, coming from behind to eventually defeat a determined Southern 3-2. A first-half double from Emily Morison had shocked the reigning champions as Southern took a 2-1 lead into the break, Grace Jale supplying Auckland’s response with a long-range rocket to set up a fascinating second half. Jale struck again mid-way through the second spell to equalise before Nicole Mettam found the top corner from
distance with 15 minutes remaining to seal a dramatic win for Auckland. The margin of victory was far larger down at English Park in Christchurch, where Canterbury continued their seemingly unstoppable march towards the minor premiership with yet another win, this time 8-0 over Central. Cody Taylor led the way with a
hat-trick while Hannah Wong, Chloe Jones, Jasmine Donald, Whitney Hepburn and Annalie Longo all also got on the scoresheet. Finding the net will be captain Longo’s final act for the Pride for some time as she is now about to depart for New Caledonia with the Football Ferns for the OFC Women’s Nations Cup.
