PICTURED Front Cover One of many attacking opportunities against Internationale in the Cup last Saturday. Page 3 There was a fair bit of this in the 2nd half last Saturday...

So. We’re back at the Domain again for another triple treat of Matamata Swifts football. It’s seems like we were just here doing the same thing recently... Last Saturday’s ISPS Handa Chatham Cup fixture was an adventure, to say the least. While we’re disappointed not to have wrapped it up inside 90 minutes, it was a classic cup encounter against a good, experienced side. It was pleasing to see several youngsters make contributions under pressure in an important match. With some experienced players sidelined last week it was an opportunity for the youngsters to shine. The trick now is to keep improving and start churning out consistent performances to ensure they stay in the team. As a (sometime) coach, it’s nice to see that we’re starting to build a bit of depth. We’ll need that if we’re to be successful over the course of what will be a long season. Welcome to today’s visitors. Otumoetai’s two sides have good recent records against us so will be expecting more of the same. We know what to expect today so the trick will be coming up with a plan to counter it a bit more successfully than previously. Welcome also to Waikato Unicol’s 3rd team for their re-arranged game against the Swifts A team I’d like to take this opportunity to announce that COMAG Limited is now one of the club’s premium sponsors and has also agreed to take over naming rights sponsorship of the Swifts first team. COMAG is another quality local company that has chosen to throw its support behind us, for which we’re immensely grateful. The new shirts are still a couple of weeks away so we’ll do an official launch when they arrive. COMAG takes over from Waikato Stud, who have held naming right for the last two seasons. A big thank you to Mark and the team for their support over that time. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Explaining the 2017 season (well, trying to...) Due to our 2016 finishing position we have ended up in Waikato Women’s Division A for 2017. To be fair, this came as a bit of a shock. There have been a lot of player movements and team withdrawals in the leagues above, which left us as the tenth-ranked Waikato team ahead of the 2017 season. The 10 team Waikato A league will run for one full round over nine weeks. This will decide the winner of Waikato Division A for 2017. After that, the top 4 teams from each of Waikato A and Bay One Ladies will combine for one full round over 7 weeks. This will decide the winner of the Federation league - a new competition in which points do not carry through. It is the intention that this will give those teams a taste of competition at that level, with a view to them playing there next season. The remaining six teams in Waikato A will start a new competition – the Waikato Women’s Bowl. As this is a new competition points will start from scratch.

Top sides safely through in Cup Cambridge, Waikato Unicol, Taupo and COMAG Matamata Swifts scored ISPS Handa Chatham Cup preliminary round victories on Saturday to advance to round one. Cambridge, Unicol and Taupo eased their way through after comfortable victories over fellow WaiBOP teams. Donovan Latham’s hot streak in front of goal continued at WaiBOP Championship side, Tokoroa, as Cambridge took control in the second half to win 4-1. The match was level at the break thanks to goals from Cambridge captain, Patrick Woodlock, and Tokoroa’s Connor Wood, but the visitors expressed the difference in quality in the second half. Latham scored twice and was joined on the score sheet by Sam Garmonsway. Taupo won 4-1 at home to Otumoetai in a match that seemed almost a replica of the one just up State Highway 1. The sides traded first half goals, before Taupo ran away with it in the second half. Dave Williams’ goal had kept the visitors in the game but a Nick Field brace, complemented by strikes from Fin Smith and Eli Smith got the job done for the Lakesiders against their Loaded WaiBOP Premiership opponents. In the third WaiBOP derby of the weekend, Loaded WaiBOP Premiership leaders, Waikato Unicol, picked off Tauranga Old Blues 3-0 at home in a repeat of the previous weekend’s league fixture. Beaten 5-0 a week ago, Old Blues did at least show signs of improvement, but Luke Goodwin’s double and a further goal to Gavin Clark put paid to any hopes of an upset.

The match of the round was undoubtedly at the Matamata Domain where the Swifts needed extra-time to defeat Auckland-based Internationale FC 5-4. Matamata led 2-0 inside 15 minutes thanks to an own goal and a long ranger from Scott Parsonage, but the visitors struck twice from setpieces to see the game level at the break. The Swifts hit the woodwork twice before Internationale took the lead and looked like holding on for an unlikely win, until Sam Masterson’s 89th minute equaliser. Chris Walker and debutant, Radge Avergonzado pushed Matamata’s margin to two, before the visitors grabbed their fourth midway through the second period of extra time. Sunday’s games weren’t so productive for WaiBOP teams, with both Te Awamutu and Rotorua United losing out to Auckland opposition. Te Awamutu’s trip to Auckland Wanderers ended in a 3-1 defeat, while Rotorua fell 2-1 at home to South Auckland Rangers. Due to the cup only two games were played in the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership. At Weka Street, West Hamilton defeated neighbours Melville United 3-1 for their second win in four Premiership games. Reuben Henderson scored a brace and Nik Finlay also hit the back of the net to move their side into the top half of the table. Alex Elliott’s double gave Tauranga Boys’ their first win of the season, 2-1 at SGS Papamoa. Mike Chainey scored Papamoa’s first goal of the campaign.
