Hello again. It seems like we were here last Saturday. And the one before. And the one before that... Today sees a few familiar faces return to the Domain. We saw them here during pre-season, of course, but this is the first time Duncan, Birchy and Gary have visited for a competitive match since they were involved with the Swifts against Waiuku back in August 2012. We had an interesting eight years working together. The ride from Waikato League obscurity to NRFL division 1 was quicker than anyone expected and, while turbulent, is an experience I wouldn’t have traded for anything. Not least, for me, it was a great exercise in learning what’s possible and what you need to do in order to navigate the wilderness that is football at the higher levels in this country. So the warmest of welcomes lads. I wish you nothing but bad luck and heartache, of course, during the two hours from 2.45pm this afternoon, but either side of that I hope you enjoy your time back with us. Now, to the other elephant in the room: last week’s cup match and, more specifically, what went on at half time. We have made our thoughts known through the correct channels and the process of dealing with it is underway. I’m hopeful of an outcome that will be positive for our teams over the medium- to long-term. That’s about all I can say for now. It doesn’t fix the fact we’re out of the cup at such an early stage, though. After last season’s run I was looking for more of the same. I’m sure the players were too. The small mercy is that what happened, both at half time and subsequently, didn’t cost us any league points. Anyway, I guess it was another little lesson that in football, as with anything else in life, you should always focus on what you can control, do that well and you’ll be fine. Let’s see if we can put things right this afternoon. Have fun today and I’ll see you on the touchline. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Tight at the top in Premiership Only two games went ahead in the latest round of the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership but there were goals galore as both produced lopsided results. The Premiership was severely impacted by the preliminary round of the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup this weekend, but both West Hamilton United and Otumoetai wouldn’t have minded as they buried their opponents following impressive home wins. West Hamilton took advantage of the teams around them not playing to move to the top of the table and they did it in emphatic fashion with a 5-1 Weka Street mauling of Tauranga Blue Rovers. Alex Whitehead’s hat trick was the outstanding individual performance. Whitehead’s goals came after earlier strikes from Carlo Petana and John Cameron had laid the groundwork for the Hamiltonians’ third win. The men in maroon have bounced back well after the disappointment of losing their first game last weekend. A gritty cup win on Wednesday, followed by their largest victory of the season means the spotlight of favouritism could soon be shining on Weka Street if, indeed, it isn’t already. Otumoetai went several goals better as they registered their first win of the season against bottom side, Hamilton Wanderers. The Fergusson Park-based side nearly hit double figures as they routed Wanderers 9-0. Jordi Langton led the way for Otumoetai, scoring four during an excellent individual performance. Nicholas Barnes notched brace, while Scott Mitchell, Sam Flatt and Indrachai Treerwad completed another
challenging afternoon for Wanderers. Their three points moved Otumoetai from second last to mid-table, while Wanderers remain rooted to the bottom of the table with no points from their opening four matches this season. Several Premiership teams advanced to the first round of the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup following games played on April 25 and 28. These included Papamoa, Te Awamutu and West Hamilton, who all won ANZAC Day ties. Waikato Unicol and Taupo both had comfortable home wins on Saturday to also progress. WaiBOP Championship leaders Ngaruawahia United scored a last minute penalty to knock out Matamata Swifts. With Ngaruawahia otherwise occupied, several Championship sides had the opportunity to make up ground at the top of the table. Waikato Unicol’s reserves made the most of their chance and moved level on points with the Green Machine after a 3-1 win at previously second-placed Tauranga Blue Rovers reserves. All the goals came in the second half, with Kirk Newman grabbing a double and Jackson Allen the third. Taupo reserves registered their second win in three games with a narrow 2-1 victory over Waharoa Transport Matamata reserves. Nick Field’s second half goal was the difference, after Aaron Kelly, for Taupo, and Hardy Rosas had traded early goals. In the other game, Te Puke United beat Otumoetai reserves 2-0 to secure their first points of the season. From www.waibopfootball.co.nz.
