Hello everyone and welcome back to the Domain for another full day of football. We’re in for a big one today. Our recent Loaded WaiBOP Premiership form has us in a good place so a cup match against opponents from a higher level has come along at a good time. It’s a great opportunity to see how we measure up. The atmosphere at our preliminary round win over Internationale FC was superb - certainly helped by a pulsating match. Hopefully we see the same, and more, today as we take on the Mountain Men from Onehunga Mangere United. I’ll let first team coach, Paul Richardson, take over: “Part of the whole cup story is the ability to pit ourselves against higher level opposition. We will aim to impose our style of attacking football upon Onehunga Mangere and will approach the game with intensity and pace at the forefront of our minds. “On a personal note it’s nice to lock horns with a fellow coach and mate in John Bennett, who has extensive cup experience having been at finalists Waitakere City last season. We talk football regularly and share knowledge... but not now until after today’s match, of course. “We will aim to represent our club and Federation with pride.” Junior football began last weekend with our 8th to 12th grade teams and Mini-Kickers programme getting underway. As the coach of a junior team, that means my weekends just got a whole lot busier... Numbers are up this year, particularly in the younger age groups, which is a positive sign of the sort of growth we want to see. Hopefully one day we’ll see some of our current Junior Swifts stepping out for the club in a Chatham Cup tie and experiencing the thrill of knock-out football. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Explaining the 2017 season Due to our 2016 finishing position we have ended up in Waikato Women’s Division A for 2017. To be fair, this came as a bit of a shock. There have been a lot of player movements and team withdrawals in the leagues above, which left us as the tenth-ranked Waikato team ahead of the 2017 season. The 10 team Waikato A league will run for one full round over nine weeks. This will decide the winner of Waikato Division A for 2017. After that, the top 4 teams from each of Waikato A and Bay One Ladies will combine for one full round over 7 weeks. This will decide the winner of the Federation league - a new competition in which points do not carry through. It is the intention that this will give those teams a taste of competition at that level, with a view to them playing there next season. The remaining six teams in Waikato A will start a new competition – the Waikato Women’s Bowl. As this is a new competition points will start from scratch.

Taupo topples Unicol Taupo won Saturday’s battle of the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership’s top two at Crown Park and now sit at the summit. They eased home against Waikato Unicol by the game’s solitary goal, a first half strike from Eli Smith, to not only maintain their unbeaten record but also snap Unicol’s perfect start to the season. Smith’s goal was a priceless effort that gave the Lakesiders something to defend as the match played itself out. Unicol hammered away but couldn’t breach a stubborn Taupo rear-guard on what would have been a frustrating afternoon for them. Kale Herbert’s Taupo is making a good fist of their return to the top flight. With four wins and a draw from their opening five games they now lead Unicol and COMAG Matamata Swifts by a point. Leading the Premiership is a not uncommon position for the three times champions, but it’s a credit to their players and coaching staff that they’ve made it there so soon after promotion. In the other big match of the weekend, Matamata won the Karapiro derby for the third time in a row to deepen the gloom around John Kerkhof Park. Chris Walker scored his now familiar double, this time inside the first ten minutes, to give the Swifts an early lead, before Josh Clarkin snaffled one back before the break. Patrick Woodlock evened matters up from the penalty spot just after the hour, but Matamata was back in front within minutes
thanks to Jamie Baxter’s winner. Matamata’s 3-2 victory was their fourth in five games and drew them level on points with Unicol. With 21 goals, the Swifts are by far the league’s leading scorers. Pre-season favourites Cambridge have won only one of their opening four games, although three of those have been against the league’s top three sides. They now face the daunting task of an ISPS Handa Chatham Cup tie against NRFL Division 1 leaders Western Springs before they get the chance to start climbing back up the Premiership table. Rotorua United and Old Blues both won to move to nine points. Old Blues edged West Hamilton 1-0 at Pemberton Park thanks to Joaco Reynosa’s goal, while United won 4-2 at bottom side SGS Papamoa. Edmonds Judd Te Awamutu beat Tauranga Boys’ College 3-1, while Otumoetai and Melville United shared the points following their 2-2 draw at Fergusson Park. Next Saturday’s round of Premiership games will be hit hard by the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup. Taupo, Unicol, Matamata and West Hamilton, along with Cambridge, take on Auckland-based opposition as they look to advance to round 2. Taupo’s task looks the easiest as they host Sunday league side South Auckland Rangers, while the other four teams play NRFL opposition.
