Welcome back to the Domain for another busy weekend of football. As well as Saturday’s double header the Domain will be hosting the Swifts Ladies and Swifts under-13 sides on Sunday. Even though it’s early in the season, and there’s so far to go, it’s nice to know we have a Swifts team that is finally competing at the right end of the WaiBOP Premiership table once again. It’s been a long wait. Today’s match, against a Rotorua United side who were unlucky to lose late to Ngongotaha last time out, will be our biggest test of the season. It’s great that two sides who have struggled in recent seasons have begun brightly in 2016. Hopefully we can both push the likes of Ngongie and Cambridge, who are in Chatham Cup action this weekend, all the way this year and keep this title race interesting right to the end. This match is an opportunity for one of today’s teams to mount some scoreboard pressure on the big two. Points in the bank are gold. Obviously, I’m hoping the Swifts will get the job done, but either way I expect this will a really entertaining game of football. Last weekend saw all our junior teams, along with the under-13s, begin their seasons. As a coach of a junior team, and a parent who has a child involved in our MiniKickers programme, Saturdays have become really busy all of a sudden. It’s good though. And it’s interesting to watch a vast range of players, of all sorts of abilities, learning the game. The removal of league tables for junior leagues up to 10th grade is an interesting move and worth further discussion. Having listened to the debate and thought a bit about it, I’m not sure if it’s going to make any difference to player development. It seems a bold move, but for what? Probably ridicule, more than anything. And that’s just what the game in NZ needs right now... Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Term 2
Some of our club members, along with a good number of local companies, were recently involved in a couple of projects that helped increase the club’s capacity - namely, converting the changing facilities at the swimming pool complex, as well as installing some more training lights up at Pohlen Park. The changing rooms and lights are already being well used. As we’ve seen over the last two Saturday’s, with three games at the Domain, we were in desperate of the extra space. The lights up at Pohlen have already given us extra training space, which will only be more critical once the junior season gets fully going. Without the initiative and support of Mal, Rob, Matt, Dobbo, Dwayne, John and the backing of the likes of Tony at Laser Plumbing, Jimmy Neal, Rex Barnes Engineering and the council we wouldn’t have been able to get these projects completed before the start of the season.
