Welcome back to the Domain for what, weather depending, will be our busiest weekend of the 2016 season so far. As you can see from the amount of games I’ve attempted to list on the front cover, we have quite a bit going on this weekend. You can add to that a number of junior teams playing at home, along with our Mini-Kickers programme. Clearly, the amount of rain we’ve had over the last week or so, coupled with the forecast I saw just before writing this, means we may be lucky to get everything in. To be honest, if the Hamilton City Council closed their grounds last Saturday, which shut down all junior football in the Waikato, then what chance do we have this weekend? But, it is a winter sport we play so we get on with it as best we can. The weather highlights a pressing need, not just in Matamata but across our Federation. I think I’m correct in saying WaiBOP is the only Federation in the country without any artificial football pitches. There are plans afoot at Federation level to eventually change this, but it’ll take a while. We’re involved in those discussions, both with the Federation, the council and several other interested groups, for the development of a facility here in Matamata. Again, we’re a long way off having anything built but the discussions so far are promising. You’ll notice several photos in this issue of our U-13 team in action (partly because I had a shocker with the camera at Otumoetai last Saturday...). The Young Swifts are an excellent group and it was great to see them pick up their first win of the season at Cambridge last Sunday, under somewhat trying conditions. We are by far the smallest club involved in the Federation U-13 League, so to be competitive in our first season reflects well on the job our junior coaches have done with these players over the last few seasons.
