Hello everyone and welcome back to the Domain. The last time we were here, a couple of weeks ago, we pulled off one of the best Chatham Cup results in the club’s history. It was certainly a decent way to welcome our new first team naming rights sponsor, Comag Ltd, on board but, more importantly, it set a standard for the team for the rest of the season. A decent cup run would be great for the club - players, fans and sponsors alike. Just as important, however, is doing well in the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership. That’s one of the reason’s today’s match is as important as any cup game. Another reason is that, back in the day, Matamata versus Te Awamutu was the big derby game for both our clubs. So often were we in the same Northern League, then Federation League, division that the rivalry came naturally. As someone who played in a lot of those games, for both sides, this throwback to the past should be a lot of fun today. Unfortunately we haven’t met in the league since the 2009 season so the derby feeling may have subsided somewhat. Nevertheless, it’ll be great to renew hostilities (in the nicest sense of the word, of course). I’d like to make a special mention of the work put in by Nigel Leaver and the Challenge Matamata Swifts Ladies team this season. This was a team that was unexpectedly thrust into Waikato Ladies Division A less than a week before the start of the season. There was a huge amount of trepidation initially, but the team has performed superbly and now sit just outside the top four. Last Sunday’s 11-0 Waikato Ladies Cup victory over Mangakino has, more than anything, brought home the full realisation that Division A, rather than the far weaker Division B, is where we belong. Well done team. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Top three roll on Taupo, Matamata Swifts and Waikato Unicol all had narrower than expected Loaded WaiBOP Premiership victories on Saturday but all three still picked up the points to keep the pressure on each other at the top of the table. At Crown Park, Taupo maintained their one point lead thanks to a 2-1 victory over mid-table Melville United. The fact the match was level at one apiece at the break says a lot for the battling performance of the inconsistent Melville side. But the hosts grabbed the vital winner during the second half, courtesy of Finn Smith’s second goal of the game, to nab all the points and keep their superb run going. Taupo has now won five in a row after their opening day draw with Cambridge. Dylan Blair scored again for Melville, who stay in sixth albeit having played more games than the teams around them. Like their top three rivals, Taupo will have one eye on their upcoming round 2 ISPS Handa Chatham Cup match, which will be played over Queen’s Birthday weekend. Titles are won, however, by sides that can grind out results when not at their best and Taupo seem capable of that at the moment. As do both Comag Matamata Swifts and Waikato Unicol. The Swifts were comfortable 4-0 winners at bottom side SGS Papamoa but weren’t as fluent as in some of their recent performances. Dayne Willemsen and captain, Scott Parsonage, netted during the

first half, before goals from Logan Raynel and Brad West after the break sealed the points for the league’s top scorers. Their victory margin allowed Matamata to jump ahead of Unicol on goal difference after the students won 2-1 at Edmonds Judd Te Awamutu. Ash Gower-Rudman scored once in each half to ensure Unicol bounced back from their first loss of the season at Taupo last time out, but Haydn Roil’s goal for the hosts kept them it close. Taupo sit on sixteen points while both Matamata and Unicol are on fifteen. Further down the table, Rotorua United leaped over Old Blues on goal difference following their 2-0 win at home over Tauranga Boys’ College. Up 2-0 at the break Old Blues looked like keeping up with the top three, but their opponents, Otumoetai, turned the game around during the second half to win 3-2 thanks to a Daniel Miller double and a goal from Jay Silcock. Rotorua and Old Blues both sit on twelve points. In the other game, Cambridge let everyone know they’re still around with the largest win of the weekend. Their 7-1 victory over West Hamilton came courtesy of seven different scorers – Tom Woutersen, Josh Clarkin, Patrick Woodlock, Aaron Huesser, Jordan Silvester, Donovan Latham and Kyle Stead. Defeat left West Hamilton just two points above the relegation zone.
