Welcome back to the Domain for what, after a couple of wet weeks, looks like being one of the most glorious winter Saturday’s of the season. That’s what the weather forecast says, at any rate, and when has that ever been wrong... In the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership and the WaiBOP Championship, we host teams at different ends of the table. It’s been a real struggle for Tauranga this year in the Premiership but it’s great to see they’re still fronting every week and looking to gather points. Obviously, we need to make sure we win today to keep in touch with the leaders, but I’d also like to wish the Tauranga lads all the best as their season continues. It’s also great to see Taupo back at the Domain after an absence of a season. In the late ‘noughties, Taupo versus Matamata was the biggest Premiership (Fed 1 back then) clash of the season. I have absolutely no doubt we’ll be renewing ‘hostilities’ next season, and hopefully both clubs will again be pushing for the title then. In Waikato Division A we host Northern United, which is an amalgamation of Hamilton North and HukanuiRototuna. Northern is now one of the largest clubs in the Federation, and I’m guessing they’re looking to get a side in the Championship as quickly as possibly. Obviously, last Saturday was a disappointment to all our players. The Domain had taken on a lot of water over the two weeks prior and that, along with the aeration and seeding work the council had just undertaken, meant the surfaces were ripe for destruction. They weren’t really in the best of nick before that, so we can only imagine how bad they would had become had games been played. We’ve had full days of sunshine since Wednesday this week, so I have no doubt the surfaces will be up to scratch today. Enjoy. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Cotter Cup

Matamata Swifts’ Brayden Lissington has made the Top 25 of the global #PFLNext Futsal competition. With your help we can ensure he makes the Top 10, and then be flown to the USA to play an exhibition match with the two best Futsal players in the world. Voting is open until Monday June 6 and each person is allowed to vote 10 times per day. It says to pick your Top 10, but you can just select Brayden’s name if you wish (which we’d recommend). Go to the following address to vote: http://professionalfutsal.com/pflall-star-player-voting/ We’re sure Brayden would thank you for voting!

Last Wednesday the club hosted the football component of the Cotter Cup, an annual tournament that is played for between local primary schools. The tournament went ahead after the original attempt on May 18 was aborted due to the bad weather. Eight teams from around the district competed in two groups to find the semi-finalists and then finalists. Matamata Primary defeated Hinuera School in the final, while Matamata Primary’s 2nd team won the third place play-off. A good number of Swifts junior players were involved with their various schools on what was a very busy day of football.
