PICTURED Front Cover Glen Carmichael on the burst against Te Awamutu. Page 3 The goal scoring feeling.
Hello everyone and welcome back to the Domain. Normally such a fortress for us, we somehow managed to lose to Te Awamutu here in our last match. We could point to several factors that weren’t, er, overly helpful but at the end of the day if we’d performed as we had in previous games none of that would have mattered. What that result does point to is that every team, except perhaps for one, will be competitive in this league this year. No outcomes are guaranteed so consistency will be key for success this year. Which brings us to today’s opponents. At this stage of the season Unicol are probably favourites for the title, not least based on their consistent form so far. They’ve hammered teams when the chances have arisen and squeezed three points out of games other teams may not have. That’s credit to Dan and his players after last season’s disappointing second half. Like us they’ve had a good run in the cup too, and will be feeling a little hard done by to have been knocked out by Franklin on pens. Expect something of a backlash today. On the cup, it’s great for us to be looking forward to another home game, this time against North Shore United, in a couple of weeks. Round 3 is about as far as Matamata’s ever gone (I’m writing this on a boat in the South Pacific so don’t have access to the club scrapbooks) in the Chatham Cup and now we’re up against the big boys. I’m betting we were the side everyone wanted to draw at this stage, which is cool. We’re more than happy to be at home so we’ll see how we go. It wasn’t long ago we were competing on equal footing with them in the NRFL, so let’s see if we can match them again. Well done boys. I’ll see you all when I’m home in midJune. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece
