Hello everyone. A big welcome from me and everyone at the club to the players, management and supporters of West Hamilton United for today’s Loaded WaiBOP Premiership encounter. We’re back at the Domain again after a couple of contrasting weekends. Our 4-0 win at Te Awamutu a fortnight ago was our largest win there since at least the early eighties, while defeat by the same margin at Taupo last time out was hugely overshadowed by a season ending injury to our captain. Injury seems to be a recurring theme across the senior club this year, and not just for the first team. The Challenge Matamata Swifts ladies team, for instance, was looking like genuine contenders to play in the WaiBOP Women’s Premier League after the first few games of the season. Within a few weeks, however, key players were out and they were battling to get a fit team on the field. Young players like Finn Challis and Blair Griffiths saw their seasons end early while playing for the ressies and, of course, we’ve seen the on-going battle Scott’s had to get a consistently fit team on the field in the Premiership. I think ‘that’s football’ is the phrase I’m looking for. And it is. Injuries, along with how you react to them and bounce back from them, are a part of any sport. They’re a nightmare for coaches but, even more so, for the players themselves. It’s one of the most frustrating things in the world when all you want to do is play for your club on a Saturday but your body won’t let you. So all I can say to any player who is forced to watch today rather than feel the joy of actually taking part in this big game is to stay strong, work hard to get back and then enjoy it when you do. You will make it back. And when you do you will, I expect, enjoy it more than you ever have. Regardles of all that, have fun today and I’ll see you on the touchline. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Favourites Flex Their Muscles There was a slight power shift at the top of the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership table on Saturday as Flying Mullet Papamoa edged past previous leaders West Hamilton United to reclaim the top spot they held for several weeks at the start of the season, while Taupo also laid bare their title aspirations with another impressive home win. Former All White Cole Peverley’s 25th minute penalty proved the difference in a tight encounter at Papamoa’s Gordon Spratt Reserve. While the hosts did enough to record a 1-0 victory, coach Duncan Lowry wasn’t overly impressed with his team’s performance, labelling it their worst of the season. Equally, though, Lowry was more than happy to take another important three points ahead of this weekend’s glamour ISPS Handa Chatham Cup 3rd round tie at Birkenhead United. Title winning sides aren’t dominant every week but they do have a happy knack of grinding out results when they need to. With Papamoa’s defensive shape and experience, coupled with their constant goal threat, they are better set up than most to mount a sustained run this season. West Hamilton’s fourth defeat of the season saw them drop just one spot on the table, but with teams like Taupo and Waikato Unicol circling just below, both with games in hand, they can’t afford too many more slip ups if they plan on staying in the race. Taupo ran away with their match against Comag Matamata Swifts during the second half to record an ultimately dominant 4-0

victory as Fin Smith was again the goal scoring star. Smith’s neat finish separated the sides at the break, but the first half was marred by a season ending injury to Swifts captain, Dayne Willemsen. Rob Williams doubled Taupo’s lead on the hour before Smith completed another hat trick with two goals midway through the half. Taupo’s defensive showing squeezed the life out of Matamata and looks like being the platform on which their title challenge will be maintained. Melville United edged their way past Otumoetai at Gower Park as goals from Josh Nooijen and Harry Coulson gave United a 2-1 victory that saw them move level on points with West Hamilton, while Waikato Unicol did enough to secure three points at Tauranga Blue Rovers. Riku Soejima’s double helped the students to a 3-1 victory in which Kieran Payton also scored. Reuben Wood’s goal had Rovers level at half time but the hosts couldn’t maintain parity against one of the league’s most free scoring sides. Te Awamutu secured a comfortable three points thanks to a 3-0 win at Waikato rivals Mercury Tokoroa. Joel Roil, Jack Connor and Osvaldo Ruggeri scored the goals that gave Te Awamutu their fourth win of 2018 and moved them closer to mid-table safety. Tauranga Boys’ College snapped their winless run as Hamilton Wanderers defaulted in a move that is hopefully not a sign of things to come. From www.waibopfootball.co.nz.
