Today at the Domain is pretty much all about the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup. Comag Matamata Swifts have created a big piece of history for our small club by progressing to the last 32 of the Chatham Cup, New Zealand Football’s premier knockout competition, this season. The club’s records are far from perfect, but we can be pretty confident in saying this is the furthest the club has ever been in the Chatham Cup and it all began on that sunny afternoon back in April against Internationale FC. A big welcome to the players and staff from North Shore along with today’s officials. I really hope we’ve managed to turn on a decent day for you, and everyone, so that we can enjoy the spectacle of a stirring encounter. The last time we played North Shore United at the Domain was back in March 2012 when we were both in NRFL Division 2. We lost 3-0 to Shore that day in a match that pretty much summed up the direction both clubs were heading at the time. This was a week after we had lost 2-0 to Onehunga Mangere, a side we played in an earlier round of the cup this year. Our current captain Scott Parsonage, Jamie Baxter and Dwayne Signal (sorry Dwayne, I don’t have any pics of you...probably a good thing) played that day and have all gone on to play well over 100 games for the club (nearly 300 in Scott’s case). Occasions like we have today are their reward for that ongoing commitment to the Swifts. Shore won the reverse game in 2012 3-2 up in Devonport in a match remembered as much for Dunc’s, er, extended after-match speech, Tommy P spending all night in North Shore Hospital and an early article from Enzo Giordani’s in-the.back-of-the.net, as the football. Well done to Paul and our players for making it this far in the cup. Whatever else you do lads, enjoy today as you’re the first to do what you’re about to do for this club. Top three roll on Waikato Unicol seem to be the only Loaded WaiBOP Premiership side capable of anything resembling consistency this season. Unicol’s run of nine wins from ten games sees them sit six points clear at the top of the table and, if their 5-0 win at Melville United on Saturday is anything to go by, they only appear to be getting stronger. Gavin Clark’s double, which was complimented by further strikes from Aiden Smith, Hamish Carruthers and Simon Gibson, saw Unicol ease to another impressive victory against their Hamilton neighbours. The three points took them to 27 from ten games and, given the inconsistency below them, they appear more than likely to walk away with the league. History shows the Premiership usually has a single outstanding team each season and Unicol appear to be that side in 2017. The goals flew in in four of the weekend’s other five Premiership games. Tauranga’s Old Blues moved themselves into second with a 6-2 dismantling of Edmonds Judd Te Awamutu, thanks largely to a second half goal rush. Some solid Old Blues names were on the score sheet, with Mike Barton netting twice, along with Bobby Barnes, Luke Barlow, Andy Carter and Reuben Wood also finding the back of the net. This was another imperious home result for Old Blues and, after a mixed start to the season, they seem to have got themselves on track.

Taupo lost again, this time 3-1 at Cambridge, and dropped to third. The match was level at one apiece at the break but Cambridge secured the result with a solid second half performance. Patrick Woodlock, Joshua Clarkin and Tom Wouterson struck for the hosts whose third win in a row lifted them up to fourth in a condensed table. For one time leaders Taupo, their second defeat in a row has seen them slump back to the pack while allowing Unicol to race clear. Another team in a slump is Comag Matamata Swifts, who fell 4-3 at Tauranga Boys’. The worst and the best of the Swifts were on display in this match as Danny Warrilow’s early strike was the prelude to three goals from the hosts in the first quarter hour. The Swifts struck back in kind at the start of the second half through Jamie Baxter, Glen Carmichael and Chris Walker before Kody Gorst won it late for the students. Matamata’s third loss in a row has seen them drop to seventh ahead of the third round ISPS Handa Chatham Cup match against North Shore United. In the other games, John Cameron’s goal gave West Hamilton a 1-0 win over Rotorua United while Otumoetai beat last placed Papamoa 3-1 thanks to goals from Jayden Hill, Scott Reid and Dave Williams.
