Hello everyone and welcome to the Domain for the first Saturday double header we’ve hosted since Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Yep, it’s been that long. A lot has happened since then. The World Cup has probably been dominating most of our lives for a big chunk of time during that period. It’s hard to think it’s nearly over. The Swifts have played four away games in five, while the ressies have also spent a fair bit of time on the road. We also got a resolution to what was little more than a bogus allegation of racial abuse made against 1st team captain, Dayne Willemsen, in the aftermath of April’s ISPS Handa Chatham Cup match against Ngaruawahia United. WaiBOP’s judicial committee didn’t find enough evidence in Ngaruawahia’s complaint against Dayne to even warrant a hearing, let alone consider taking any further action. This is as we thought it would be due to our own investigations, which we took very seriously, as well as the (lack of) quality of the case presented. Our club has a diverse membership and we are welcoming of anyone and everyone who wishes to play football here. We don’t accept racial, or any other type of, abuse. We also won’t accept it when someone tries to play identity politics with the reputation of our club. If you throw the race card at us you better bloody well be 100% sure of what you’re doing. In a social media fuelled, fake news era, where everyone thinks their opinion matters and will often simply make stuff up to support that opinion, the method we saw in this case is becoming more and more common. Certain people at Ngaruawahia could, perhaps, have been a little more self-aware in this case. It’s their issue, not ours, that they weren’t. As for today, we’re here for some football. Boys’ College clear as favourites falter Only four games were played in the latest round of the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership and, of those, just one went entirely according to the script. Tauranga Boys College jumped three points clear at the top of the table after pummelling neighbours, Tauranga Blue Rovers, 6-2 at Pemberton Park. After a heavy run of top level schoolboy matches, the students hit the ground running in this one and effectively had it wrapped up after a four goal first half haul. Scott Hawkins, Alex Elliott with two, Ryan Peddle, Lewis Reid and Kody Gorst all hit the back of the net for the free scoring visitors who now have, by far, the best attacking record in the league. Flying Mullet Papamoa would have expected to keep pace with Boys’ College, but were beaten 2-1 at home by an Otumoetai side that came out on the right side of a tight game against a top side for the second week running. After knocking off Taupo last weekend Otumoetai were at it again, scoring from a set piece and a fast break. Nick Barnes and Jordi Langton were Otumoetai’s goal scoring heroes this time as they showed the rest of the league that there is a way through Papamoa’s normally ironclad defence. Fawwaz Ali’s goal had the game level at one apiece at the break, but Papamoa struggled to find any further joy against a compact Otumoetai rear-guard. Waikato Unicol, with games in hand, seemed to be gathering pace in the race for
the title, but slipped up at home to Comag Matamata Swifts. Unicol had the best of the game, as their recent form suggested they might, but a Brad West goal saw the Swifts in front at the break. Luke Goodwin drew Unicol level during the second half but there was late drama when Matamata was awarded a 90th minute penalty. Jamie Baxter slotted it for the Swifts, whose win moved them into the top five. This result illustrated just how unpredictable this year’s Premiership is as, a week after having Tauranga Blue Rovers complete a league double over them, the Swifts managed the same feat against Unicol. The other game, between Melville United at Te Awamutu, finished level at 2-2. Played at Gower Park, both sides scored a goal in each half, with David Brennan and an own goal doing the damage for Melville, while Jack Connor grabbed a double for the visitors. The point kept Melville in the top four, one point behind Papamoa and Taupo and four behind Boys’ College. Mercury Tokoroa and Taupo gained three easy points when their opponents, Hamilton Wanderers and, surprisingly, West Hamilton United, chose to default their fixtures. For Taupo, the three points drew them level with Papamoa, while Tokoroa moved themselves out of the bottom two.
