Welcome back to the Domain for another WaiBOP Premiership and Championship double header. We’re still battling away with the state of the surfaces at the Domain but, as we found out last weekend, this isn’t an uncommon problem across the region. It’s frustrating, though, because I think we all want to watch our teams performing in optimal conditions. Still, it’s a winter sport (as they say) so we just get on with it. Our visitors today - Melville United and Whakatane Town - bring with them differing, yet common, goals. Both need wins but for different reasons. Melville is one of the top sides in the Premiership and need three points to stay in the hunt, while Whakatane need a couple of victories to move off the foot of the Championship table. This means we’re in for a couple of highly competitive matches. This morning saw our junior teams play their final games before the start of the July school holidays. While our teams cater for a wide range of abilities, it’s clear to see they all have one thing in common: enjoyment of football. Our key responsibility is that at that age we ensure the kids keep learning through enjoyment of the game and, I reckon, we’re consistently hitting the mark through some dedicated and inspiring volunteer coaching. We’ve also had an excellent Mini-Kicker (ages 4-7) group running all term. Despite the weather we’ve been able to maintain strong numbers throughout. This, I’m sure, is in no small part related to the small band of coaches and parent helpers who ensure each week’s session is well organised and suitably run. Our junior players will be back on the field in late July. In the meantime I’d like to thank all the volunteers involved and wish everyone an enjoyable couple of weeks off. As for our senior teams, we’ll soon be at the business end of the season, which could be exciting times for our fans. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece
