We’ve been used to full houses at the Domain this season, so it’ll be strange to have just the one game at home today. But what a game this looks like being. We’ve had some good battles - proper battles - against Old Blues over recent seasons and we expect more of the same today. They’re absolutely flying at the moment and did something we couldn’t do - beat Unicol - last time out. From the looks of it we’ll probably be welcoming to the Domain a few faces who have worn the black and white in the past. Playing your old club usually adds something to a player’s performance, so I guess this isn’t a particularly helpful state of affairs as far as we’re concerned! Nevertheless, welcome back boys. The last month or so has been interesting for us, to say the least. Our run to the last 32 of the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup was a first for the club, and the team put up a good showing against North Shore two weeks ago. That run has, of course, coincided with a dip in our league form, but we got three points last Saturday in trying conditions, so hopefully that’s a sign of things to come. As we’ve seen, teams that can string three or four wins together can go shooting up the table, even at this stage of the season, while a few losses in a row will drop you like a stone. We have a season-defining month ahead of us, with four games against teams currently above us on the table. As a fan, this is an excellent prospect to look forward to. I’m sure the players feel the same. Today is also the final day of junior football for the term. As a junior coach, it’s been a fun couple of months with my 8th grade Panthers, and it culminates with a day long tournament at Papamoa tomorrow. I must say, though, I’m looking forward to having a couple of Saturday mornings to myself, before getting back into it for term 3. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Carter hat trick rolls Unicol A first half hat trick from Andrew Carter has helped Old Blues to a 3-0 win over Loaded WaiBOP Premiership leaders, Waikato Unicol, pushing the Tauranga-based side firmly into the title frame, while offering the league a glimpse of Unicol’s potential fragility. In a key matchup between the Premiership’s top two sides, Old Blues took full advantage of the familiarity that came with playing their fifth home game in six to blow Unicol off the park during the first half. The students wiped away their first half hangover to be more competitive after the break, but they were never likely to claw back such a match defining deficit. Old Blues have been in red hot form and now sit three points behind Unicol having played a game more. That gives the students a slight buffer, but such gaps have already disappeared for other sides in what has been a highly competitive Premiership season. Taupo maintained their position in the top three after their guaranteed three-pointer against SGS Papamoa. Fin Smith and Max Duckworth both grabbed doubles, while a goal from Eli Smith and an own goal eased Taupo to a 6-0 win. Cambridge seems to be fully back on track and their fifth win in a row, 4-0 in over Edmonds Judd Te Awamutu in the Waipa derby, kept them a point behind Taupo in fourth. Some familiar names were on the score sheet as Joshua Clarkin, Donovan Latham, Patrick Woodlock and Tom Wouterson helped their team to victory. Otumoetai stayed fifth after a routine 4-1

home victory over a Rotorua United side that hasn’t won in five games. Dave Williams’ double was complimented by further Jordi Langton and Daniel Miller strikes to help Otumoetai to their fourth win on the trot. Comag Matamata Swifts jumped a couple of spots into the top half after a 4-3 win at West Hamilton United. Goals from Chris Walker, Jamie Baxter, Bjorn Vossen and Glen Carmichael had the Swifts seemingly out of sight with a 4-1 half time lead. The hosts hit back with a couple of second half goals but Matamata held on for the first win in four. In the other game, a Dylan Blair double and a goal from Benjamin Wheatley eased Melville United to a 3-0 win over Tauranga Boys’. Cambridge Reserves suffered their first defeat of the season, 3-1 at home by Edmonds Judd Te Awamutu Reserves, allowing Waikato Unicol Reserves to move into the Championship’s top spot. Unicol’s 3-1 win at Old Blues Reserves meant teams from the club lead both the region’s top leagues – possibly a first. Third placed Te Puke United dropped points after being held 0-0 by Richardson Racing Stables Matamata Reserves, while Tokoroa beat Tauranga City United 2-0 for their fourth win on the trot. Otumoetai’s Reserves beat Rotorua United’s Reserves 2-0 in the early game at Fergusson Park, while Taupo’s Reserves won 3-1 at Crown Park over Hamilton Wanderers.
