After a bit of a breather, fixture-wise, we have another full weekend of matches at the Domain, with two games today and another tomorrow, along with all the usual junior games. I’ve mentioned it before but, with all the rain we’ve had this winter, our surfaces are not what they’ve been in the past. Obviously there’s not too much we can do about it, but it’s a shame for players and fans alike. What we can do, as club management, is look at what we can do in the future. We have been in ongoing discussions with the council, WaiBOP Football Federation, the college, Matamata Futures group, and others, regarding the current state of the club’s facilities and what the community needs as we move into the future. The ideal outcome for the club, we believe, would be to have a purpose-built football facility, including the talkedabout Matamata stadium, built at Swap Park. This would allow us to have modern facilities, while also having access to all the extra space for playing fields (potentially artificial) that can be maintained to a high level. We are, of course, aware that we may ultimately need to compromise in order for both the club and the community to gain a facility that best suits everyone’s needs. We also believe that an on-going presence at the Domain, probably for junior football, will be necessary. I’m meeting with the stadium group again this week and would be happy to give you an update after that if you’re interested. In the meantime, we’ve got some football to watch. Otumoetai is the only side to win at the Domain against the Waikato Stud Matamata Swifts this season (in the Chatham Cup) and they hammered us at their place. There’s also a top three finish potentially at stake today. So there’s a bit to play for. I’m sure that will produce a compelling match for us fans to watch. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece
