We have another full afternoon of football scheduled for the Domain today, which likely means it’ll be raining and the surfaces will take another hammering. That seems to have been the way of it this season, unfortunately. Welcome to all this weekend’s visiting teams. Matamata’s not really that far from anywhere and, if we can somehow manage to keep the rain away, I’m sure you’ll have a decent afternoon at the Domain. While it’s not quite time to talk about the 2017 season being in its death throes, given we’ve got a month of catch-up games to play at the end of the regular schedule, it’s quite easy to start looking ahead to the 5-a-side season then next year. It is August already, after all, and Spring’s less than a month away. Anyway, it’s not time to take our eyes off the ball just yet. It’s quite easy to get let the week to week challenges cloud what has been another season of progress for the club. On the field, of course, results have been all over the place, but that’s the nature of football. It’s off the field where I’ve seen some excellent progress, with a strong and talented management team helping get some important things done - particularly around the clubrooms. If you’re standing still you’re moving backwards...and I think it’s fair to say we’re not standing still. As someone who’s been at this for a while that’s pleasing to see. Hopefully all our teams can finish the season strongly on the field. I don’t, for a second, think winning doesn’t matter; your week goes so much smoother after a decent victory on Saturday or Sunday. So best of luck to all the Swifts teams both today and through the rest of August and September. Hopefully we’ll see a good number of club members at this weekend’s Quiz Night. I promise I haven’t made the questions too difficult... Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Major shake up in Premiership title race The Loaded WaiBOP Premiership’s top three all won at the weekend, which was expected as they were playing the league’s bottom three teams. What wasn’t expected was only two of the three matches were blow outs. Leaders Cambridge and third placed Old Blues scored fifteen goals between them but Waikato Unicol could only squeak home, 1-0, against an SGS Papamoa side that has let in nearly a century of goals already in 2017. Simon Gibson’s 37th minute strike was the difference between the two sides at Papamoa. It meant Unicol finally snapped their losing streak but their narrow margin of victory will be as concerning as their previous three matches, which all ended in defeat. There were no such problems in front of goal for Cambridge and Old Blues. Captain Patrick Woodlock netted a hat trick, including two first half penalties, while both Josh Clarkin and leading scorer, Donovan Latham scored twice as Cambridge overran Melville United 8-1 at John Kerkhof Park. Melville’s cause wasn’t helped when they went down to ten men early in the second half, but by then Cambridge was already three goals to the good and running away with the match. Old Blues nearly matched Cambridge, thumping neighbours Tauranga Boys’ College 7-1 at Pemberton Park to remove any rustiness they may have felt after not playing the previous two weekends. In fact, most of the damage was done in the first half as they scored five without reply. Karl Bryant and Andy Carter both helped themselves
to doubles as their team not only gave their goal difference a massive boost but kept the pressure firmly on the top two. Outside the title race, Edmonds Judd Te Awamutu moved into the top four for the first time this season after hammering Rotorua United 5-0 at home. Scott Voorend’s goal had the hosts narrowly ahead at the break before they blew Rotorua away during the second half. Voorend added a second, while Joel Roil, Jack Connor and Michael SargentMens also helped themselves to goals. West Hamilton returned from Otumoetai with a 2-1 win and the Federation Challenge Shield in the day’s upset result. Daniel Miller, for Otumoetai, and Harry Rose traded first half goals before Matt Sawyer struck in the second half to win the Shield for West Hamilton for the second time this season and also snap Otumoetai’s long winning run, which ended at six in a row. Such is the tightness of the league, however, that the result didn’t move the Hamiltonians up from eighth. The two sides just above them, Taupo and Comag Matamata Swifts, met at Crown Park with the Swifts edging it 2-1 thanks to a Chris Walker winner late on. Taupo had taken the lead early in the first half, before Matamata proceeded to miss countless opportunities, including a penalty, during the remainder of the half. Dayne Willemsen nodded home the equaliser just after the break.
