It’s another big afternoon of football in Matamata, with a derby day double header against neighbours, Cambridge, and a Waikato Plate semi-final to look forward to. The last couple of weeks haven’t been ideal for both ourselves and Cambridge as we’ve both suffered defeats to Ngongotaha. Those results confirmed the Villagers as winners of this season’s Loaded WaiBOP Premiership, a title both Cambridge and Matamata have held in the past. We’ve been sniffing around the top end of the league all season so to not be able to push Ngongotaha further will have disappointed Paul and the squad. But from a club management point of view, 2016 has been a vast improvement on the last couple of seasons and that’s been pleasing. I was at Cambridge’s match against Ngongotaha last Saturday (no, not as a scout...) and thought Ngongotaha were very lucky to win, but it’s their season and they found a way to get the points. Now we all get to sit back and watch them attempt to make a go of the NRFL. The quality of the much maligned Domain surfaces mean the Swifts A team’s semi-final against Melville will be played at the College. That’s not great from a viewing point of view, but I hope we’ll see our boys back at the clubrooms in celebratory mood by mid-afternoon. The A team has turned their season around after a rough first couple of months and the opportunity to play for some silverware would be great reward for their efforts. Summer’s (hopefully) just around the corner but the football doesn’t stop. We’re organising a quiz night to raise funds for our U-19s, who head to Napier over Labour Weekend, and there’s 5-a-side, senior and junior prizegiving, and our AGM to look forward to over the next few months. As always, you should check in regularly at the website to keep in touch with what’s going on. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

SWIFTS UNDER-13s HOW ARE THE YOUNG SWIFTS DOING IN 2016?

The Matamata Swifts U-13s currently lead the WaiBOP U-13 League Division B with one game to go. This ranks them fifth in the Waikato Bay of Plenty region. Here are some images from their recent 1-1 draw with Hamilton Wanderers. Above left Tyler Tapper closes down his Wanderers opponent. Above right Anton Ganas scored Matamata’s equaliser against Wanderers last weekend. Below Don Smitstra clears his lines.
