Hello everyone and welcome to the Domain for our final Premiership/Championship double header of 2019. We made it. A month or so ago we were in a Premiership relegation dog fight and things were looking pretty grim. A sharp reversal of form has seen us pick up some quality results and all but mathematically ensure our right to fight for another season. We now need to ensure we’re ready to go again in 2020 and do so in a far stronger manner than we have, at times, this year. We’ve tried various way of competing at this level over the last 15 years or so - some have been successful and others not so much. What do we want for next year? I’m keen to have that conversation, over the next month or so, with as many stakeholders as possible. Welcome to Merv and the Melville boys. With most of the pressure off I expect we’ll see an open, entertaining game today. Hopefully the weather plays ball too so the players (and fans) don’t have to slog it out once more. A special welcome to Otorohanga, who have already won the Championship and confirmed their place in next season’s Premiership. Our two clubs had some superb encounters in this league a decade and more ago and I’m expecting nothing less in 2020. I get to wear my WaiBOP hat (for a short time) today when I present the Otorohanga players and staff with the Championship trophy after today’s match against our reserves. Moments like this are why players play the game, why coaches coach and why fans, er, support. Enjoy! That’s it from me for another season. But, before I go and for one final time this year... ...enjoy the games and I’ll see you on the sidelines. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

WaiBOP Premiership Update - Round 21 A shock defeat for 2018 Premiership winners, ninetyblack Taupo, means Flying Mullet Papamoa can claim a maiden title with a win in their final game this coming Saturday. Papamoa was made to work, for the first 45 minutes and more, at Tauranga Blue Rovers. Lewis Creed’s double actually had Rovers ahead at the break, with Andrew Cooper’s goal the only fruit Papamoa had to show for a below par first half effort. The half time rocket, however, had the desired result as Mitch Kenny drew the visitors level a minute after the restart, before player-coach, Colm Kenny, scored the first of his three midway through the half to put the visitors in front for the first time. Papamoa’s task was made easier as Rovers’ captain, Karl Bryant, was shown two yellow cards in quick succession, before Colm Kenny completed his hat trick. That was job done for Papamoa but surely even they wouldn’t have expected what was taking place in Taupo. Three goals in a fifteen minute spell mid-way through the first half had set the match at Crown Park on a rather unexpected course. Max Came, Scott Hawkins and Alfie Cole all scored for Boys’ College to leave Taupo’s title defence in tatters. Leading scorer, Jordan Lamb, pulled one back for Taupo ten minutes after the restart, but Vinnie Phirun restored the students’ three goal advantage ten minutes later and that was pretty much that for the shell-shocked Lakesiders. Papamoa can secure the title on home turf this Saturday with a win over lowly Te

Awamutu. Surely another upset is too much for Taupo to ask for? Otumoetai moved ahead of Taupo into second spot on the table after a 3-0 win over relegated Safer Team Te Puke United. Jordi Langton, Mitch Evans and Dan Mills grabbed the goals. Waikato Unicol did much the same as they eased past Melville United, also by 3-0. Matthew Nixon’s first half strike was supplemented by goals from Thomas Wright and Kieran Payton to guarantee Unicol another top four finish ahead of this weekend’s visit by Taupo in what could be a rather tasty encounter. Ngaruawahia United went a long way towards securing Premiership football for another season after two first half goals from Noor Mire led them to a 2-0 win in a crucial relegation battle against West Hamilton United. The Hamiltonians are now five points adrift of safety and, while they have games in hand over the teams above them, time is rapidly running out. Gisler Architects Te Awamutu and Comag Matamata Swifts slogged out a 1-1 draw. Chris Walker’s first half goal had Matamata in front at the break before Haydn Roil equalised midway through the second. The result dropped Te Awamutu to tenth and, while they have a five point gap back to West Hamilton, they could still have an anxious few weeks. They play their final match at Papamoa this weekend, while West Hamilton still have three to play. From www.waibopfootball.co.nz.
