Hello everyone and welcome, finally, to our last weekend of football at the Domain for the season. It’s been a long one, on and off the field, but at least we have a couple of days of home games with which to end the club’s 2018 campaign. Saturday is all about the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership where we have a rather unique occasion. We’re hosting a Premiership doubleheader that sees title chasers, Papamoa, take on Wanderers in the early game, then the Swifts host Otumoetai at the usual time. On Sunday, the Challenge Matamata Swifts Ladies welcome neighbours Cambridge in the final game of the season for both teams. My phone tells me we should be in for a pretty decent weekend on the weather front. Let’s hope the sun’s out so the players and fans can soak in some good football in even better conditions. I’d like to thank everyone who has played their part for us this season. The players and coaches are the most visible members of the club, but we have an excellent admin team as well. We’ve had some key people give up a lot of time to keep this club ticking over, both now and through the years, and they are the true heroes of football in our small town. A big thank you, too, to our sponsors. We’re blessed to have the backing of a range of superb local companies, along with the top-class people who own and run them. Football can be expensive, at times, so the money, goods and services our commercial partners provide are a massive help to us when providing football for our community. That’s it from me for another season. Please have fun and enjoy this weekend’s matches, and I’ll see you on the sideline one final time this season. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Junior Opportunity - Shirt Sponsorship Investment: $500 + GST. We have full sets of shirts, in the club’s new Nike style, on order now for ALL our junior 8th to 12th grade teams. We expect them to be available and in use by mid-June. With this comes a unique opportunity to get the logo of your business, or the business you work for, placed on the front of the shirts of your child’s team. This is a one-off investment that lasts for the life of the shirts (usually 3-4 seasons). All funds raised through this scheme will be re-invested in the club’s junior programme. Premiership rolls on Only four games were played in Saturday’s final scheduled round of the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership and fans are no wiser as to which team will end a marathon campaign as champions. The National Secondary Schools Championships played havoc with the pointy end of the table this weekend, with both Taupo and Papamoa forced to sit out their weekend’s matches as their opponents had players preparing for the big tournament in Christchurch. In a season extended by both the weather and excellent ISPS Handa Chatham Cup runs for several teams, both these sides still face the proposition of five games to play. That has, unfortunately, all but stymied any hopes either club may have had of entering the play-offs for the Northern Region Football League, with Auckland Football stipulating the Premiership must have a clear winner by mid-September in order to be eligible. With time running on, it’s likely the league may not even have its champions crowned by the end of the month. In Saturday’s games, Waikato Unicol have done their best to turn the title race into a three way dog fight, after Riku Soejima’s goal gave the students a 1-0 win at Te Awamutu on Saturday. While they’ll need a slip-up of major proportions, particularly by leaders Taupo, they still at least are maintaining an interest at the business end of what’s been an encouraging season for them. Most interest in this latest round of games was focused on the on-going battle between

Tauranga Blue Rovers and Mercury Tokoroa to see which club will avoid the second relegation spot. Tokoroa, currently sitting second from bottom, slipped further behind their Bay of Plenty rivals as Ben Wheatley’s goal gave visiting Melville United a 1-0 win at Strathmore Park. At the same time, Rovers were involved in a ten goal thriller that ultimately saw them secure what may be a vital, lifesaving point. West Hamilton United, Rovers’ visitors, took a 2-1 lead into the break before the Blues’ survival instincts kicked in. Luke Barlow completed a brace for the hosts, while Jared Bailey, Marcus Bathan and Thomas Crane also got in on the goal scoring act. Chris Gardiner replied with a hat trick, while Alex Whitehead also netted in the first half. Hashim Noorzai’s goal four minutes into added time stopped it from being an even better day for Rovers. When the dust settled, the match had finished all square at 5-5 and, more importantly, Rovers had inched a point closer to safety. In the other game, between two midtable sides, Otumoetai turned over Comag Matamata Swifts thanks to first half goals from Rowan Martin, Sam Flatt and Daniel Miller. Next weekend sees the first set of catch-up games, with ten of the league’s twelve teams in action. From www.waibopfootball.co.nz.
