Welcome to the Domain. We have another Swiftacular afternoon of football at the Domain today with all three men’s teams playing at home yet again. Pretty cool aye? These triple headers, which we’ve had quite a few of this season, have been generally been good club afternoons. It’s great that we can all get down to the Domain, play our games and support the other teams. I’ve certainly managed to get a few photos this year too. We’ve managed to stretch our facilities so we can cope on days like these, so the only real worry when we have a full house is the weather. That hasn’t always played ball this season, but it’s a winter sport isn’t it? Anyway, welcome to the two Rotorua United sides and also to the Wanderers Classics. The junior football season is only a few weeks from coming to a close. As a junior coach I have to say it’s been a fun year with my 8th Grade Panthers team. The kids have so much energy, so much potential and so much to learn. It’s been a challenge trying to put together sessions that help them, while not treating the kids like they’re at school. I guess I’m learning too. As any coach would say, however, the biggest reward is seeing when the kids get it. With junior players you’re working with players of all ability levels and at different stages of development, so trying to help them individually while also putting a functional side on the field each week can be quite time consuming. But when a players pulls out something on a Saturday that you’ve been working on with them for weeks... well, it’s worth it. Okay, enough self-indulgence. Best of luck to all the Swifts teams today. Play hard, play smart and play together. And let’s have a result or two as well, aye. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Premiership race becomes clearer The final month or so of the 2017 Loaded WaiBOP Premiership season looks like being a two horse race as current leaders Cambridge and previous leaders Waikato Unicol both picked up important wins at the weekend. Cambridge’s 3-1 victory over third placed Old Blues at John Kerkhof Park has effectively ruled the Tauranga-based side out of title contention, while Unicol’s thumping 5-0 win at Rotorua United means that, despite their horrid recent form, they still sit just three points behind their Waikato rivals. Cambridge was comfortable enough in despatching an Old Blues side that had hammered them in the reverse fixture back in May. An early goal from Daniel Clarkin settled any nerves they may have had and when Theo Petropoulos doubled the lead less than ten minutes before the break Cambridge looked well on their way to an eleventh consecutive victory. Callum MacLeod for Cambridge and Andy Cooper for Old Blues traded second half goals as the red and whites kept their challengers at bay. Unicol’s only victory since the end of June had been at rock bottom SGS Papamoa, but they made short work of a Rotorua United side that needs to be careful they don’t sink into a relegation battle. A Van Ewert goal had the students ahead at the break, before they ran riot in the second half. Ewert added a second, while Riley Rigden helped himself to a double and Tom Wright also got on the score sheet.

The margin of victory as much as the three points will have been a huge boost to Unicol’s confidence, but to snatch the title they’ll probably need to win all their remaining games and also hope Cambridge slip up. Comag Matamata Swifts moved into fourth, one point behind Old Blues, after a 2-0 win at Edmonds Judd Te Awamutu. A first half Jamie Baxter penalty and an insurance goal from Brad West just after the hour mark gave the Swifts their third win on the trot and also pushed them ahead of their defeated opponents in the Premiership standings. Otumoetai moved up to fifth after a battling 3-2 home win over second bottom Tauranga Boys’ College. Jordi Langton’s double, supplemented by a Daniel Miller goal, meant Otumoetai got home for their ninth win of 2017. Alex Elliot and Adam Davidson replied for Boys’ College. Taupo’s slump continued after another home defeat, this time a 3-1 reverse against West Hamilton United. Goals from Harry Rose and Reuben Henderson had the Hamiltonians ahead 2-1 at the break and Henderson’s second ensured his team registered a well-deserved win. At the bottom of the table SGS Papamoa missed their best chance of the season to register a point. Peter Pop popped up for Melville United less than 20 minutes from the end to score the only goal of the game as the visitors narrowly got home 1-0.
