Welcome to our Visitors WaiBOP Football welcomes the Capital Football players and staff to John Kerkhof Park for today’s National Women’s League season opener. Loaded WaiBOP enters the 2016 season with optimism on many fronts. The start of a new campaign is always exciting as everyone starts with a clean slate and on an even footing. The women’s game in our region, as it is across the country, is getting stronger
as the seasons go by. We expect today’s match will not only be a highly skilled contest but, as importantly, will be watched by a large crowd of budding young female footballers - our next generation of Loaded WaiBOP players. Thank you to Cambridge FC for providing the venue and all today’s volunteers. Matches like this cannot go ahead without your help. We hope everyone enjoys the match.
NWL 2016 - Round 1 The 2016 National Women’s League gets underway today with three fixtures all kicking off at 1pm. The match of the round is at William Green Domain in Howick, where Auckland host the recently re-badged Canterbury United Pride. The result of this game will give everyone an excellent indication of how two of the National Women’s League’s more favoured sides are likely to perform this summer. In the other game, Central host 2015 champions Northern in Palmerston North. Northern has named a powerful squad, full of NZ reps, and will be favoured to repeat their title success. Southern United has the round 1 bye. For Loaded WaiBOP Football, however, the focus is on today’s visit of Capital. gone past the match against Capital. “Like every other side in the league, I guess, we want to start well, so it’s important we get our preparation and performance right,” said Gardiner during the week. “We actually have a reasonably experienced squad this season, with quality and depth in our playing ranks, so I’ll be asking the players to be brave, trust in their ability and look to win the key moments. I’m sure Capital will be coming here to do pretty much the same thing, so I expect we’ll be in for a decent match.” If 2015’s encounter between the two sides is anything to go by, fans should expect a thriller. On that occasion we raced out to a 3-0 lead inside 21 minutes thanks to two goals from Paige Satchell and one from Issy Coombes. Capital got one back almost immediately, a second right on half time, then an equaliser in the final ten minutes to make it 3-3.
