Lecture and seminars FIRST TEACHING APPOINTMENT - ICT LECTURE THEATRE NASUWT - Steve Hardy After initially working within banking, Steve qualified as a teacher and took up his first post in a junior school in Nottinghamshire. He subsequently taught at all levels in primary schools in four different local authorities, including a two-year spell as an advisory teacher during the introduction of the National Curriculum. His most recent post, which he left in July 2012, was as a County Adviser for NQT Recruitment and Retention. A HEAD’S PERSPECTIVE ON RECRUITMENT AND CAREER PROGRESSION - JOHN PARRY CENTRE 004 Mr Paul Hemmings, Principal, Mill Chase Academy Inspirational teaching that energises children is at the heart of any successful school, with talented and motivated staff at its core. For graduates moving into teaching, Mr Paul Hemmings believes that the early stages shape an individual’s career. Passionate about attracting and developing staff to become the best teachers and leaders of tomorrow, Mr Hemmings will share his journey with you having experience of both a school and academy environment: after qualifying as a Business Studies and Economics teacher in 1998 he achieved his first leadership role just three years later in 2001 and by 2004 was appointed Assistant Headteacher at Robert May’s School in Odiham. Aged just 32, he became Deputy Headteacher of The Costello School, Basingstoke in 2007 before being appointed by the University of Chichester Academy Trust to lead its first secondary academy, Mill Chase Academy in Bordon, Hampshire in 2014. www.millchase.hants.sch.uk www.unicat.org.uk WHERE ARE THE JOBS? - JOHN PARRY CENTRE 004 Rhys Howells - Eteach Rhys Howells is the Talent Marketing Manager at Eteach and son of CEO and founder Paul Howells. Having been in the industry for over 5 years, Rhys has worked with teachers young and old in not just a marketing capacity but also as a recruiter and brings with him a host of knowledge about how best to maximise your opportunities and knowing your worth as a teacher in today’s climate. Eteach is the UKs leading education jobs board and recruitment specialist. No other company provides as many opportunities in permanent roles throughout the country in both primary and secondary schools and we have special relationships with some of the best Independent schools and Academy Groups around. Check out our website for all the latest roles: www.eteach.com 1
10 Ways to speed date with an exhibitor This Fair gives you the opportunity to meet many different organisations. You are likely to have a conversation for 3-10 minutes so make that time count. You may wish to discuss with an exhibitor what sort of candidates they are they seeking and how/when to apply by. Here are some useful tips: 1. Approach the Fair with the appropriate attitude…. Look at it as a fun, no pressure event. You may not find an opportunity that suits you immediately but you are going to learn a huge amount about how to approach applying for NQT roles and how to make sure you will get shortlisted. Keep an open mind about where you might want to work. 2. Prepare for your speed dating…. Think about how you want to present yourself to exhibitors and recruiters. Work out your Unique Selling Points (USP) – 3 x unique things that an exhibitor will recall about you after a busy day meeting hundreds of students. Have a list of questions in your mind that you want to ask every exhibitor (see next page for some ideas). Do you have an up-to-date CV? 3. Make a list…. of things you find desirable in a teaching position, as well as those that are deal-breakers. 4. Be yourself…. the purpose of the fair is to help you to understand what sort of vacancies are appropriate for an NQT and what sort of applicants will be shortlisted. What sort of school will you be happy working for? 5. Show confidence… Even if you don't feel confident, make an effort to appear confident to give a good impression. 6. Introduce yourself… to as many exhibitors at the fair as possible. 7. Respect the time available… don’t overstay your welcome. Move on to other exhibitors to allow other students to have a conversation. Find out what will happen next if you give your email to an organisation. 8. Close your discussion appropriately... 9. Collect a business card or leaflet... from every conversation. 10. Follow up... don’t let this ‘date’ go cold……check your notes and follow up all connections afterwards. Then book a 1:1 interview with a Careers Consultant of the University’s Careers and Employability Service if you need help with your application/ personal statement or think a mock interview would be useful.

What’s in a name? Many students are confused about the different types of schools (maintained/free/academy/multi-academy etc.) and what the differences mean to teachers working in these environments. Here is a quick guide taken from the Department for Education website with further details from the New Schools Network Overview Most state schools have to follow the national curriculum and are inspected by Ofsted. The most common ones are: community schools, run by the local council, which employs school staff, owns the land and buildings, and sets the entrance criteria (e.g. catchment area) and are not influenced by business or religious groups. foundation schools, have more freedom to change the way they do things than community schools; they are run by a governing body which employs the staff and sets the entrance criteria. Land and buildings are owned either by the governing body or a charitable foundation. academies, run by a governing body, independent from the local council - they can follow a different curriculum. grammar schools, run by the council, a foundation body or a trust - they select all or most of their pupils based on academic ability and there is often an exam to get in. Special schools Special schools with pupils aged 11 and older can specialise in 1 of the 4 areas of special educational needs: communication and interaction cognition and learning social, emotional and mental health sensory and physical needs Schools can further specialise within these categories to reflect the special needs they help with, e.g. autistic spectrum disorders, visual impairment or speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).
18
Academies Academies are publicly funded independent schools. They don’t have to follow the national curriculum and can set their own term times. They still have to follow the same rules on admissions, special educational needs and exclusions as other state schools. Academies get money direct from the government, not the local council. They’re run by an academy trust which employs the staff. Some academies have sponsors such as businesses, universities, other schools, faith groups or voluntary groups. Sponsors are responsible for improving the performance of their schools. Faith schools Faith schools can be different kinds of schools, e.g. voluntary aided schools, free schools, academies etc, but are associated with a particular religion. Faith schools are mostly run like other state schools. They have to follow the national curriculum except for religious studies, where they are free to only teach about their own religion. The admissions criteria and staffing policies may be different too, although anyone can apply for a place. Free schools Free schools are funded by the government but aren’t run by the local council. They have more control over how they do things. They don’t have to follow the national curriculum. They are ‘all-ability’ schools, so can’t use academic selection processes like a grammar school. Free schools can: set their own pay and conditions for staff change the length of school terms and the school day. Who can set up free schools? Free schools are run on a not-for-profit basis and can be set up by groups like: Charities teachers universities parents independent schools Businesses community and faith groups Private schools Private schools (also known as ‘independent schools’) charge fees to attend instead of being funded by the government. Pupils don’t have to follow the national curriculum. All private schools must be registered with the government and are inspected regularly. 19

Booking an event To see what events are available, select Events from the menu bar. You can either Search & Book, which takes you to a searchable list or, if you know what date the event is being held, you can go to the Events calendar. Once you have found an event that you would like to book a place on, click on the event title and select Book now. Depending on the event, there may be a short booking form to be completed. Events booked will appear in your My Events area where details of your place can be viewed or cancelled. You will also receive an email booking confirmation.
