Lectures and seminar THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD Vic Goddard, Principal, Passmores Academy Vic Goddard is proud to be a council estate boy from South London but suffers the curse of therefore being a Crystal Palace Fan; if you caught any of ‘Educating Essex’ he was probably the one crying. Vic, from a young age, wanted to be a PE teacher and following his degree course in Chichester enjoyed 2 years working on the south coast at Angmering School learning from two of the best PE teachers you could ever wish to meet. During this time Vic realised that he wanted to be a headteacher and set himself the target of being a head by 40 and on the golf course by 50! This led to him moving on from jobs sad to leave but determined to make the next career step. Four years in Cheam followed by a three year stint working in an international school in Cairo followed where he took on the role of Head of Faculty. On returning to the UK Vic was fortunate to work with a truly inspiring headteacher, Kevin Sadler in his first SLT role and in 5 years went from Assistant Head to Head at Passmores School (now Academy) in Harlow. Vic feels privileged to be a headteacher and is humbled everyday that parents/carers are willing to trust him to educate their children.
A HEAD’S PERSPECTIVE ON RECRUITMENT AND CAREER PROGRESSION Paul Hemmings, Principal, Mill Chase Academy Inspirational teaching that energises children is at the heart of any successful school, with talented and motivated staff at its core. For graduates moving into teaching, Mr Paul Hemmings believes that the early stages shape an individual’s career. Passionate about attracting and developing staff to become the best teachers and leaders of tomorrow, Mr Hemmings will share his journey with you having experience of both a school and academy environment: after qualifying as a Business Studies and Economics teacher in 1998 he achieved his first leadership role just three years later in 2001 and by 2004 was appointed Assistant Headteacher at Robert May’s School in Odiham. Aged just 32, he became Deputy Headteacher of The Costello School, Basingstoke in 2007 before being appointed by the University of Chichester Academy Trust to lead its first secondary academy, Mill Chase Academy in Bordon, Hampshire in 2014. www.millchase.hants.sch.uk www.unicat.org.uk 1

Question suggestions... ...for Local Authorities/Academy Trusts:
What tips do they have for making a successful application for an NQT role?
What skills and personal qualities are most often included on the person specification?
How does the central induction programme work?
What sort of support and professional development is available for NQTs?
Do they have a central applications system? (Some local authorities encourage NQTs to register for a central recruitment process or a “talent pool”)
What initiatives are taking place in the local authority this year?
Are there any other open days or events being planned?
Where do they advertise their vacancies?
When should NQTs start looking for vacancies for a September start?
Are there any recruitment incentives for NQTs?
Do you offer employment from June onwards?
Do you give feedback on unsuccessful applications/interviews?
...you might ask the Agencies:
What experience do they have of working with NQTs?
What are the agency’s Terms and Conditions, e.g. pay rates?
How much permanent/temporary fixed term/supply work is there in a particular area?
Do they have a relationship/contact with any local authority/schools in the area you are interested in?
How could the organisation help you as an NQT?
...you might ask the Unions:
What support do they offer NQTs?
How much are the subscriptions and when do you start paying them?
Why are they the best choice for NQTs? 3

10 Ways to speed date with an exhibitor This Fair gives you the opportunity to meet many different organisations. You are likely to have a conversation for 3-10 minutes so make that time count. You may wish to discuss with an exhibitor what sort of candidates they are they seeking and how/when to apply by. Here are some useful tips: 1. Approach the Fair with the appropriate attitude…. Look at it as a fun, no pressure event. You may not find an opportunity that suits you immediately but you are going to learn a huge amount about how to approach applying for NQT roles and how to make sure you will get shortlisted. Keep an open mind about where you might want to work. 2. Prepare for your speed dating…. Think about how you want to present yourself to exhibitors and recruiters. Work out your Unique Selling Points (USP) – 3 x unique things that an exhibitor will recall about you after a busy day meeting hundreds of students. Have a list of questions in your mind that you want to ask every exhibitor (see next page for some ideas). Do you have an up-to-date CV? 3. Make a list…. of things you find desirable in a teaching position, as well as those that are deal-breakers.
4. Be yourself…. the purpose of the fair is to help you to understand what sort of vacancies are appropriate for an NQT and what sort of applicants will be shortlisted. What sort of school will you be happy working for? 5. Show confidence… Even if you don't feel confident, make an effort to appear confident to give a good impression. 6. Introduce yourself… to as many exhibitors at the fair as possible. 7. Respect the time available… don’t overstay your welcome. Move on to other exhibitors to allow other students to have a conversation. Find out what will happen next if you give your email to an organisation. 8. Close your discussion appropriately... 9. Collect a business card or leaflet... from every conversation. 10. Follow up... don’t let this ‘date’ go cold……check your notes and follow up all connections afterwards. Then book a 1:1 interview with a Careers Consultant of the University’s Careers and Employability Service if you need help with your application/ personal statement or think a mock interview would be useful.

What’s in a name? Many students are confused about the different types of schools (maintained/free/academy/multi-academy etc.) and what the differences mean to teachers working in these environments. Here is a quick guide taken from the Department for Education website with further details from the New Schools Network Overview
Most state schools have to follow the national curriculum and are inspected by Ofsted. The most common ones are: community schools, run by the local council, which employs school staff, owns the land and buildings, and sets the entrance criteria (e.g. catchment area) and are not influenced by business or religious groups. foundation schools, have more freedom to change the way they do things than community schools; they are run by a governing body which employs the staff and sets the entrance criteria. Land and buildings are owned either by the governing body or a charitable foundation. academies, run by a governing body, independent from the local council - they can follow a different curriculum. grammar schools, run by the council, a foundation body or a trust - they select all or most of their pupils based on academic ability and there is often an exam to get in. Special schools Special schools with pupils aged 11 and older can specialise in 1 of the 4 areas of special educational needs: communication and interaction cognition and learning social, emotional and mental health sensory and physical needs Schools can further specialise within these categories to reflect the special needs they help with, e.g. autistic spectrum disorders, visual impairment or speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).
14
Academies Academies are publicly funded independent schools. They don’t have to follow the national curriculum and can set their own term times. They still have to follow the same rules on admissions, special educational needs and exclusions as other state schools. Academies get money direct from the government, not the local council. They’re run by an academy trust which employs the staff. Some academies have sponsors such as businesses, universities, other schools, faith groups or voluntary groups. Sponsors are responsible for improving the performance of their schools. Faith schools Faith schools can be different kinds of schools, e.g. voluntary aided schools, free schools, academies etc, but are associated with a particular religion. Faith schools are mostly run like other state schools. They have to follow the national curriculum except for religious studies, where they are free to only teach about their own religion. The admissions criteria and staffing policies may be different too, although anyone can apply for a place. Free schools Free schools are funded by the government but aren’t run by the local council. They have more control over how they do things. They don’t have to follow the national curriculum. They are ‘all-ability’ schools, so can’t use academic selection processes like a grammar school. Free schools can: set their own pay and conditions for staff change the length of school terms and the school day. Who can set up free schools? Free schools are run on a not-for-profit basis and can be set up by groups like: charities teachers universities parents independent schools businesses community and faith groups Private schools Private schools (also known as ‘independent schools’) charge fees to attend instead of being funded by the government. Pupils don’t have to follow the national curriculum. All private schools must be registered with the government and are inspected regularly. 15
