welcome from mayor roy d. buol Greetings! As Mayor, and on behalf of our 59,000 Dubuque residents, I thank you for your interest in Iowa’s oldest city, our “Masterpiece on the Mississippi!” Foremost, Dubuque is blessed with a hardworking, skilled and educated workforce, supported by numerous quality private and public institutions of higher learning. As a City, we promote citizen involvement and community engagement in developing our vision and priorities. This is the formula for success that has positioned Dubuque to be among the top cities in the Midwest to raise a family, have a meaningful career, start or grow a business, and enjoy life! Dubuque is considered the “birthplace of Iowa” and features a rich history, interesting architecture, and natural beauty. Our city provides rewarding and exciting opportunities with a small-town friendliness and feel. In addition to a beautiful landscape, excellent accommodations and meeting spaces, Dubuque features award-winning restaurants, charming shops, art and river history museums, elegant turn-of-the-century homes, and many other attractions. Since 2006, our identity is found in the City Council-adopted, citizen-developed, and community-supported initiative known as “Sustainable Dubuque.” This focus offers a balanced approach to life quality in the areas of economic prosperity, environmental integrity, and social/cultural vibrancy (see www.cityofdubuque.org). This focus has resulted in significant recognitions over the years from around the nation and internationally, including a coveted Outstanding Tourism Community of the Year award from the State of Iowa and the 2012 All-America City designation by the National Civic League, the second time in five years! Our community is also honored to have been named one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People by the America’s Promise Alliance in four of the past five years; the 2010 Best Small City to Raise a Family by Forbes, one of 2010’s Ten Smartest Cities on the Planet by Fast Company, and 2008’s Most Livable Small City by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. I invite you to visit Dubuque soon and enjoy all Dubuque has to share, including our free trolley service (Memorial Day weekend through October)!
Sincerely, Roy D. Buol Mayor

CAN’T MISS SHOT TOWER HISTORIC LANDMARK 9# Built in 1856 for making lead shots, the tower is 120’ tall. Lead was melted at the base of the tower, hoisted to the top, poured through screens of different gauges, tumbling smooth & round as it fell into the water vats below. The shots were then sorted and packed. When completed, the tower could produce between 6 to 8 tons of lead shots daily, but it was rarely operated at full capacity due to being bought by competitor Chadburne and Forster in 1862. A lumber company purchased the Shot Tower in 1881 and used it as a watch tower until it was gutted by fire in 1911. In 2010 the Shot Tower underwent a $600,000 rehabilitation project. find out more on page 22 20

FENELON PLACE ELEVATOR 4#
Banker, Mr. J. K. Graves, lived on top of the bluffs and worked at the bottom. Unfortunately, he had to spend half an hour driving his horse and buggy around the bluff to get to the top and another half an hour to return downtown, even though his bank was only two and a half blocks away. He decided that a cable car would solve his problem. Mr. Graves’ cable car operated for the first time on July 25, 1882. Before long, his neighbors began meeting him at the elevator asking for rides. Eventually these neighbors came together and formed the Fenelon Place Elevator Company to continue the operation of the elevator. | w w w. t r a v e l d u b u q u e . c o m find out more on the right
