MAKING OUR BUILDINGS NET ZERO READY

DESCRIPTION

Reducing carbon emissions is a critical strategy to mitigate climate change. Buildings account for 50% to 75% of carbon emissions in American cities. We will discuss how Net Zero Energy buildings contribute to lower carbon footprints. We will define NZE and EUI and we will discuss specific design strategies which can be used to reduce energy consumption. We will discuss how renewable energy can be incorporated into a building project to offset energy use and achieve Net Zero Energy.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• Attendees will be able to define Net Zero Carbon, Net Zero Energy, and Net Zero Ready, and will understand how buildings help to mitigate climate change.

• Participants will be able to define Energy Use Intensity (EUI), understand how EUI is calculated, and how this metric is used as a design tool and as a performance measurement.

• Attendees will be able to identify specific design tools and strategies for achieving Net Zero and Net Zero Ready buildings.

• Attendees will understand how renewable energy systems including solar photovoltaic power and wind power generation can be integrated into a building project to achieve NZE.
