The Mission, Vision, Purpose, and Objectives of the African Methodist Episcopal Church The Mission of the African Methodist Episcopal Church is to minister to the social, spiritual, and physical development of all people. At every level of the Connection and in every local church, the African Methodist Episcopal Church shall engage in carrying out the spirit of the original Free African Society, out of which the A.M.E. Church evolved: that is, to seek out and save the lost, and serve the needy. It is also the duty of the Church to continue to encourage all members to become involved in all aspects of church training. The ultimate purposes are (1) make available God’s biblical principles, (2) spread Christ’s liberating Gospel, (3) provide continuing programs which will enhance the entire social development of all people. In order to meet the needs at every level of the Connection and in every local church, the AME Church shall implement strategies in: (1) Christian discipleship, (2) Christian leadership, (3) current teaching methods and materials, (4) the history and significance of the AME Church, (5) God’s biblical principles, (6) social development to which all should be applied to daily living.

MEET OUR GUEST The Reverend Michael Leon Mitchell was born on August 4, 1960 in Perry Florida to the late Reverend Arthur L. Mitchell, Sr. and the late Mrs. Mary L. Mitchell. He is the ninth child of fourteen siblings (four sisters and ten brothers). He is the husband of Cordelia Mitchell and the father of Courtney and Channing. The hand of God was evident on his life even as a young child, and in 1977, while yet in high school, Reverend Mitchell answered the call to the ministry and preached his trial sermon August 28, 1977 at New Saint James AME Church, Jacksonville, Florida. Determined to ascertain that which God intended for him to do, he shortly thereafter began training and study under the African Methodist Episcopal Church and was ordained an Itinerant Deacon in 1979 and an Itinerant Elder in 1981. He served on the General Board of the African Methodist Episcopal Church from 1996 through 2008. He is the Chairman of the Board of Examiners and Treasurer of the East Annual Conference. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He is also a member of Sons of Solomon Lodge #166 F.& A.M.. He is a member of Tillman Valentine Consistory #22 Ancient, Accepted Scottish Rite United Supreme Council Southern Jurisdiction 32°. His first pastoral assignment came in 1985 at the A.M.E. Church of the Master, Jacksonville , and his tenure has taken him to Mount Zion, (Arcadia), Saint Luke (Tampa) , and Martin Memorial ( Miami , Florida). Reverend Mitchell was raised in Jacksonville and is a product of the Duval County Public School System. He graduated from Wilberforce University, Wilberforce, Ohio in 1982 and received a Master of Divinity Degree from Turner Theological Seminary at the Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta, Georgia in 1986. He also received an Honorary Doctor of Ministry Degree from Edward Waters College. He is currently pursuing his Doctorate degree at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. Reverend Mitchell was chosen to succeed Bishop Robert V. Webster as pastor of Saint Stephen in September, 1992, and with him came a fresh, vibrant anointing that has excited and ignited the congregation to a spiritual high. Reverend Mitchell has spent the past 19 years teaching and preaching the Gospel with revelation knowledge and a sincere determination to build a people able to stand, steadfast and unmovable, on the promises of God. His concern for the personal spiritual growth of his members is a top priority. He has expanded the weekly worship services, and strongly promotes the weekly spiritual enrichment meetings and activities. These added amenities, along with a special anointing to minister to adults and youth, has greatly increased the membership of Saint Stephen since his arrival. Reverend Mitchell has implemented several improvement projects which include the installation of the renovations to the Sanctuary and Educational facilities, including the addition of a steeple and elevator; the church technological capabilities have been enhanced and the real estate holdings have been expanded. A funeral home has been purchased, which serves as an Outreach Center to assist the community with food, clothing and basic essentials. In August, 1999 the Saint Stephen Child Care & Learning Center opened its doors to the community. The 1.7 million dollar project was a vision from God, implemented and nurtured by Pastor Mitchell, to be a catalyst for economic development in the inner-city neighborhood. This facility is a state of the art and academically recognized 16,800 sq. ft. facility, serving 225+ children. These physical enhancements are matched only by the spiritual enrichment of the membership and have sparked a new attitude toward active Christian Stewardship and the up building of God’s Church. An anointed man of God whose concern for the people is not only spiritual, Reverend Mitchell is actively involved in the social, economical, and educational needs of the community. He is excited about the implementation of projects and ministries that will reach out and touch the hearts and souls of the people and also literally change their lives for the better. Reverend Mitchell is determined to achieve victory in the vision that God has given him for a personal ministry of excellence and a church to meet the challenges of the future. He is a candidate for Episcopal Service in the year 2012.

To: Presiding Elder and Sis. Beverly Postell, II, Rev. Valarie J. Houston, Host Pastor, Pastors, Ministers, and Laity, I greet you in the joy of the risen Christ for all that He has done. I thank Elder Postell for allowing me to serve as the Outstanding Orlando District’s Church School Superintendent. It is my hope that this year’s convention will inspire us anew to engage in our work in the spirit of the Free African Society, to fully embrace and carry out the Great Commission to the uttermost parts of the earth, and demonstrate to the world what a true disciple of Christ is supposed to be about. Have fun. In His Joy,

Minister: I was glad when they said to me, let us go into the house of the Lord, our feet shall stand within Your gates, O Jerusalem. People: For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. Minister: Because of the house of the Lord our God I will seek Your good. People: Those that are planted in the house of the Lord, shall flourish in the courts of our God. Minister: Blessed are they dwell in Your house. Lord, I have loved Your habitation, the place where Your honor dwells. People: For the Lord is in His holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before Him. Minister: Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer. All: O sing unto the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth, sing praises.
