Welcome Welcome to the California All-State Music Education Conference (CASMEC)! The California Alliance for Jazz (CAJ), California Band Directors Association (CBDA), California Choral Directors Association (CCDA), California Music Educators Association (CMEA), and the California Orchestra Directors Association (CODA) want to first express our thanks to all who attend the conference. The leadership teams from each organization have worked diligently to create a wonderful music education opportunity for attendees and students alike. These individuals, working in collaboration with one another, have helped prepare a meaningful experience for all involved and they certainly deserve our gratitude. Each CASMEC partner organization recognizes that music is an essential part of the human experience. We hope this conference will encourage and remind us of this fact. The arts transform lives and your work as music educators plays an integral role in this process. While these may be challenging times, educators are persistent in seeking ways to create, connect, and support students and communities. The skills we are learning during this unique time will only serve to enhance future experiences and supplement educational practices used to reach students and change lives for the better through music. We hope you will find your own moments of inspiration and renewal at this conference. Thank you for your service to this wonderful profession. OVERVIEW AND FACULTY
The Choral Leadership Academy (CLA) will bring together high school students who demonstrate an interest in the music profession, together with preservice college music education majors, for two days of musical and educational activities. These activities will teach musicianship skills, inspire confidence, and build camaraderie among musicians of the next generation. The students in the CLA will: • sing new literature • work on their musicianship • listen to and learn from veterans in the field • develop friendships that will support them as they begin their careers We are privileged to have an outstanding CLA headliner; Dr. Kevin Fenton, Professor of Choral Conducting and Ensembles at Florida State University; who will bring expertise, humor, and insight to the CLA students’ experience. The CLA faculty will also include Dr. Angel Vázquez-Ramos (CSU Bakersfield), Professor Lori Marie Rios (College of the Canyons), Professor Désirée La Vertu (Occidental College), Professor John Sorber (College of the Sequoias), and Mr. Ryan Clippinger (Ridgeview High School).

G is For Gratitude! G is For Gratitude was commissioned for the 2022 California All-State Junior High School Jazz Band by the California Alliance for Jazz in honor of our dear friend and colleague Michael Gangemi. Many friends and peers refer to Mike as “G” (myself included) — hence the “G” in the title of the composition. Mike’s enthusiasm, big heart and playfulness are just a few of his personality traits that I set out to capture in my composition, a happy yet raucous shuffle, that I feel he would greatly enjoy. Over our years of friendship and admiration for one another, Mike commissioned me to write a piece for the Santiago High School Jazz Band 1 performance at the 2020 CASMEC Conference. The piece, Blues for JM, was given this title at Mike’s suggestion (there’s a long about that title and this is probably not the time to share THAT story). In this new piece honoring G, the main theme of Blues of JM is morphed a bit and given a new setting. I guess it could be said that melodically G is For Gratitude is a further derivation of Blues For JM. I think Mike would love this concept and it seems incredibly fitting that this melody continues to live on just as G’s work as an educational leader will continue to touch and inspire generations of music students and educators to come. Lastly, I included the word gratitude in the title because G was always thankful to his students, and peers and I am truly grateful that he was a part of my life. I am better person for having Mike in my life as a friend and colleague and he will always live on in my heart. Love you madly, G!
