HOUSE OF A CUBIST studio 2
The dwelling is one for a cubist, more specifically, Pablo Picasso. The form is derived from a study of Picasso’s works, both painting and sculpture. A piloti structure is used as an organizing element. Finally, a single, organic curve slides through the house dividing inside/outside and public/private. A composition of varying geometries, and dramatic spaces is created.

GALLERY OF WEAVINGS studio 3
The ultimate goal is to construct a space to exhibit, and conserve the weavings of Loja Saarinen from her studios in the Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The layout of the campus is determined by strong axial connections. The majority of the axis are laid out orthogonally, but the connection between Loja Saarinen’s two studios breaks that grid. Two linear forms then meet, and telescope from the intersection point. The spaces created act as galleries on the public level, workshops below, and offices above.

INDUSTRIAL REFORMATION studio 4
The Battle of Homestead took place at the Carrie Furnaces in Homestead, Pennsylvania in 1892. It was there that Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick locked the steel workers out of the factory for salary disputes. The lock-out resulted in lives being lost, and a blow to the American Labor Unions.
The steel museum is an allegory of the workers at Homestead and their families. As one enters, it is among protesting laborers on their paths from Rankin, Homestead, and Pittsburgh. Access is gained under close watch of Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick. As one begins the progression through the museum they are constantly supervised by the administration above. From there the journey becomes less claustrophobic. The large, open gallery then has access to a roof-top terrace. Once there, one can reflect on what the experience and the significance of the Homestead site.

PARAMOUNT SQUARE studio 5
Paramount Square is a dedication to the Paramount Theatre in the Entertainment District of Toledo. The existing site is an on-grade parking lot, which is in position to be the gateway of the city. The layout of Paramount Square is superimposed on the three overlapping grids of downtown Toledo. The Paramount Theater is located across from the Valentine Theatre and is connected by an area to be used for outdoor festivals and movies. The public realm stretches out from the site, and invites everyone to take part in the advancement of the city. Paramount Square provides a pristine urban landscape for residents and visitors of Toledo and pays homage to the rich history of the city.

DESIGN/BUILD_CMU design and construction
The program was to design and build a structure showcasing the strength and attributes of concrete masonry. Our intent was to create varying spaces within the assigned 8’ x 8’ area. There is a contrast between the enclosed cramped space, and the open outer spaces. The materials used in concrete masonry construction, rebar/cement/aggregate, were also used as complimenting elements.
