Lecture 1: From Camel to Starship

Lecture 1: Audio Post Production for Film - Part 1

“Camel To Starship” is about the rapid advancements in recording in such a short time span, Wax cylinder to all the latest digital recording systems and whether we are making better recordings for this huge leap or not? I think it can open up a very lively debate!

I will present a power point based talk that goes through the various roles that make up the team for doing audio post on a film. I will look first at the route the pictures take, as a simple overview of the process, then go into detail of the roles and what makes for instance, a good dialogue editor, effect editor, dubbing mixer etc. This lecture is designed to be an introduction to Audio Post and will not get into creative detail. It will focus on day to day issues and how these roles fit within the context of a changing landscape for film making.

Lecture 2: Tales from the darkside

Lecture 2: Audio Post Production for Film - Part 2

Tales from the darkside is going to be about making records and how you deal with all the associated crap that comes with certain musicians and record company types.... The Diva vocalist, the insecure guitar player etc....

In this lecture I will look at the creative perspective that is applied to Audio Post for Film. I will show a short 25 second clip for the Oscar Winning film “Slumdog Millionaire” broken down into all of the component audio parts, and demonstrate how the different crafts approached the issues for this film and how they all worked together, in the context of this short piece, to help make the film engage it’s audience. I will also discuss the creative interaction between the craft skill areas and look at the role of the Supervising Sound Editor.

Kevin Feazey

General note: Many of the same issues are addressed in Parts 1 and 2, but where in part 1 I focus on these from a mechanical perspective, Part 2 looks at these from a creative perspective.

Lecture 1: Audio Alchemy How to turn lead into gold or at least better quality lead.

Workshop: I will focus on mic technique, and the workflow involved in recording foley.

Dealing with the realities of a working session when the players are less than stellar and all you have for help are your wits.
