Learn a skill and earn with dignity and proud Government of Bihar initiated a new project ‘Mukhya Mantri Bhiksha Nivriti Yojna’ with the aim of uplifting the living standard of the poor and to make Bihar a beggar-free state. DB Tech in collaboration with State Society for Ultra Poor and Social Welfare (SSUPSW), a unit of social welfare department under Bihar Government, took up the initiative to implement ‘Kaushal Kutir’ project, the vision of the Bihar State Government to empower the street beggars to refrain them from the thankless job. The objective is to bring economic independence to the marginalized section, who has been engaged in imploring for money with little or no expectation of reciprocation, by providing an opportunity to enhance their skills, explore new careers, and treated with dignity. The entire program was filled with ups and downs from the beginning of the project. During the first meeting with the trainees, they were not interested in joining such programs as this training would deprive them of all the free facilities. Some of them were not ready to join as they thought that they would not get respectable job as they were illiterate, physically disabled, and did not have the confidence of speaking to others. However, after a few more visits, the DB Tech team was able to convince and make them understand the benefits of the training that was being provided to them under the Kaushal Kutir project. During the training program, the trainees learned many new things; and they showed more interest in learning computers as this was something very new and interesting for them. After the training, they were supported with placement as per their domain and skills. Some of the trainees were placed in Bangalore but before leaving the place they wanted to visit their relatives. The team was tensed during the time when the trainees had gone home not being sure whether they would return to travel to Bangalore. Apparently the trainees were actually so happy to start a new life equipped with the domain training and life skills that all of them returned back to earn their living with dignity and proud.

Since the beginning of September 2014, torrential rainfall in the Jammu and Kashmir caused severe floods in the region including the summer capital city of J&K. The city was totally inundated with huge damage to infrastructure, livelihood and human life. The Kashmir office and skill training centre of Don Bosco Tech is located in one of the worst affected areas at Rajbagh in Srinagar. There was huge damage at the S r i n a g a r ce n t re i n te r m s o f infrastructure and equipments, as almost two-storey office building was completely inundated in water for almost a week. This devastating flood affected the functioning of the centre badly as the activities like mobilization, training and placement of the trainees were impossible. Being one of the most efficient and performance oriented training centres of DB Tech, Srinagar centre was always ahead in all the training activities, but this time the flood had bought almost everything to standstill. Even after facing all the difficulties, the DB Tech (Srinagar) centre has now started the induction of a batch of trainees. After a rigorous mobilization drive, 110 prospective trainees were counseled for the training program. “Lot of potential candidates turned up during the mobilization; and the team had to do lot of short-listing but this

time it was very difficult for them to look for potential candidates as floods have badly affected the communities in our target areas like Rajbagh, Mehjoor Nagar, Dalgate, Rainawari and Nowpora,” says Nuzhat (DB Tech, Centre Coordinator, Srinagar). But nothing can break the sheer courage and passion to serve which was proven here at DB Tech (Srinagar). Even after being affected by floods themselves as well, the Srinagar centre team started the mobilization from December 15, 2014. Every member of the team worked tirelessly to get the job done. After almost one month mobilization, the Srinagar centre started its seventh batch in which 35 trainees are currently being trained in BPO domain.
