Skill Development & Innovation – Key to Higher Economic Growth A seminar to widen the placement opportunities for skill training programs Don Bosco Technical Institute (Park Circus) and MCC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (formerly, Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce) organized a seminar, first of its kind, on ‘Skill Development & Innovation – Key to Higher Economic Growth’ in the school premises on September 20, 2016. Some of the eminent guest speakers were Mr. Jonathan T. Ward (Principal Commercial Officer, US Consulate General, Kolkata), Swami Vedantitananda (Correspondent, Ramakrishna Mission Shilpamandira, Belurmath), Fr. A. M. Joseph (Executive Director, Don Bosco Tech, New Delhi), Prof. V.K. Tewari (Head, Agricultural and Food Engineering Dept. IIT, Kharagpur), Shri. Kamal Agarwala (Chairman, NASSCOM Eastern Regional Council), Dr. Subhrangshu Sanyal (CEO, IIMC Innovation Park) and Shri. Abhishake De Sarkar (Director, Advent Education Private Ltd). Fr Jose Podimattam (Principal, Don Bosco Technical Institute, Park Circus) in his welcome address observed that with the overdrive on skilling, so many avenues have been opened and it is becoming too commercialized. He hoped that the seminar would provide further information about acquiring technical and vocational skills, placement and job opportunities and boost up the resources to become an entrepreneur. The seminar held as part of the Golden Jubilee programme of Don Bosco, has made the city based Technical Institute more visible, particularly in the industry and commerce sector.

Commemorating the birth anniversary of noted philosopher, educationist and statesman, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the Don Bosco Tech Society celebrated Teacher's Day in nearly all the centers across India. To acknowledge the commitment and dedication of trainers, the students celebrated this day with various activities. We are highlighting the Teacher’s Day celebrated in Don Bosco Tech (Katni) centre. On September 5, 2016, trainees of BASE program, who are enrolled under Axis Bank Foundation (ABF) project celebrated Teacher’s Day at Jeevadhara ITI located in Katni district of Madhya Pradesh. Among the many who addressed the seminar, Shri Hemant Bangur (Sr. Vice President, MCCI) spoke of the opportunities lying ahead for students of technical education and their possible areas of contribution to the growth path of the economy. Mr. Ward mentioned that most of the jobs in US are created by small businesses rather than big corporate houses. So these small companies and start-ups are the key drivers of innovation and new growth. Swami Vedantitananda spoke of the key challenges in developing skills to generate employment and entrepreneurship particularly focusing on problems linked to setting up ITIs in places which are remote and not connected with the industries. Addressing the gathering, Fr. Joseph said, “There is a mismatch between supply and demand of the skilled people. Vocational training is futile without partnership with the relevant companies and over 40,000 youth get skill training with support from different companies as part of their CSR initiatives. Now it is time to develop placement partnerships where companies from different sectors to be associated for providing an opportunity to these skilled youngsters. The seminar ended on a positive note with the words of Shri Samir Saraff, Chairman of Education Standing Committee, MCCI who said that each student can be a winner provided he/she recognizes his God-given talents, works hard to develop them into skills and uses these skills to accomplish his goals.

A joint initiative of NTPC and Don Bosco Tech for empowering the youth In partnership with NTPC, Don Bosco Tech initiated the project at Shakti Nagar located in Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh on September 7, 2016. A total of 75 strong newly enrolled trainees enrolled in Helper Electrician and Beauty Therapist domains. The inauguration program began with a welcome song by the newly enrolled trainees. The training program was designed with the intention to upskill youth with valuable market driven courses. Mr. M. C. Majhi (Deputy General Manager – HR, NTPC) and Mr. A. K. Jadili (Senior Head - HR, NTPC) presided over the program as the Chief Guests. Speaking to the trainees, Mr. A.K. The trainees expressed their appreciation and affection to their teachers through cultural programmes and expressions of gratitude through short speeches. Fr. A. Jagan Raj the Director reminded that every moment that teachers spent with the students should be very productive. He urged that all trainers should engage in activities and plans that will lead to creation of an ambiance for innovation in the training and learning process leading to optimum realization of the talents of the young people. In conclusion, Ms. Pushpa Markam (GDA Trainer) wished and thanked all the trainees for organizing such a wonderful program and celebration. Fr. They also learned to differentiate between different garment texture/fabric, colors, designs, embroideries, etc. They explored the different types of stitches and stitching techniques that would help the trainees in their future work profile. Trainees acquired the knowledge on ‘Interior Merchandizing’, which was the process to arrange garments and other products on mannequin and to arrange it in proper order on shelves for better visual approach and presentation so as to appeal and attract customer at a glance. At the end of the visit, trainees were happy as they found this activity very useful and interesting that would help them immensely in their future career and growth. They appreciated the time and interest taken ny the store manager and staff of Vishal Mega Mart for their assistance and giving them the opportunity to explore the store thus making this visit a truly learning opportunity.

Industry visit is the way to understand the commercial value, identity of a product and to comprehend the marketing the product. With the intention to educate more about the industry, Don Bosco Tech (Hijuguri, Assam) organized an industrial visit to Vishal Mega Mart (Tinsukia) for the ISMO trainees on September 12, 2016. Vishal Mega Mart is one of the India’s largest fashion-led hypermarket chain with a footprint of over 175 stores, cumulative trading area in excess of 3 million square feet, in over 110 cities and towns across India. Under the supervision of Mr. Anil Dutta (Trainer, ISMO) trainees visited the mega showroom cum retail store to explore and sharpen the knowledge for their greater future. After reaching at the store, trainees were divided into groups so as to make the experience and learning easy and

Pakuli Murmu is a resident of Dum Dumi village located at Masaliya block of Dumka district in Jharkhand. Pakuli aged 35 was living with her parents and two brothers in abject poverty and was leading a very vulnerable life. Her father was a farmer and his income was seasonal. General All the other five members of the Duty Assistant family were dependent on their father’s earning, which was not regular. The condition was so pathetic that they were not able to have sufficient food for the family. The poor family condition and the lack of money compelled Pakuli to leave her studies after matriculation. Pakuli sacrificed her studies to let her brothers receive the education algthough she always wanted to study and achieve something significant in her life. It was in one of her usual days, when she was on her way to fetch some grocery items where she came across the mobilization drive conducted by Don Bosco Tech at her locality. In her curiosity she joined the crowd to know and understand what the mobilization was all about. It was here

this program for a sustainable future. He also informed them about NTPC and social activities initiated under corporate social responsibility. He said, “I am very happy that our goal to skill youngsters is finally shaping up.” He showed his interest to sign new MoU with Don Bosco Tech Society on successful completion of this program. Mr. M.C. Majhi, on the other hand, enumerated to the trainess how the training will open up new opportunities in the future. Mr. Abnish Janardan briefed about Don Bosco Tech Society and its mission and vision. He also acquainted trainees about the rules and regulation, disciplines and routine that the trainees need to follow during the training period. Trainees were happy on the inauguration of the training program. The 2-hour program concluded with the distribution of domain specific books and training kit to all those enrolled. It has generated motivation and determination among the trainees to work hard and complete the training leading to employment.

Valedictory function of TNT program concluded at Don Bosco Skill Mission

The valedictory function of fourth batch Train New Trainers (TNT) program was organised at Don Bosco Skill Mission (Bangalore) on September 8, 2016. Mr. Sridhar NE (Head – Corporate Sustainability, Titan Company Limited) and Fr. Arul Maran (Director, Don Bosco Skill Mission) were the dignitaries present at the function. In his opening address, Fr. Arul Maran welcomed all the dignitaries and trainers at the function. He stated how each year hundreds of youth who are passionate about teaching and seek to venture in social development sector, comes to Don Bosco Skill Mission to enrol in the TNT program. Many of them are doing well in their respective placse and profile. He therefore exhorted all to value this great opportunity and wished all the passing out trainers a new and meaningful chapter in their career.

During the function, the Trainers shared their learning experiences during the TNT programme and some of them also made presentation on their learning experience. Speaking to the trainers, Mr. Sridhar NE gave a motivating session on how to be successful in life and how they need to showcase their creative talents as a trainer. He along with Fr. Arul Maran distributed the certificates to the trainers. During the event 20 trainers were also handed their offer letters that they earned on clearing the interview with the prospective employer. Mr. Stanley Jones (Head – L&D Department, Don Bosco Tech Society), who was also present, distributed the IEEM Schneider Certificates to the Electrical trainers. The valedictory program concluded with vote of thanks given by Mr. Vijay Kerketta (TNT Batch IV Trainer) thanking all the management, master trainers and supporting staff for giving a unique and memorable period to remember for their lifetime.

that she heard about Don Bosco Tech and the training program cum placement opportunity provided to the trainees. It gave her a ray of hope and within a week she visited Dumka centre where trainers counselled her and took the Interest Inventory test to understand her interest inclination. She was advised to undertake the 90 days General Duty Assistant training for which she enrolled immediately with the support and blessing of her parents. This training was unique for Pakuli Murmu, as for the very first time in her life; she was introduced to technology based training. Pakuli had never seen a tablet before; she was very excited to use it. She also watched all educational videos which are based on the importance of GDA and would help her further in the future. Today after her successful completion of the training program, Pakuli is earning a monthly income of Rs.11429 as a Clinical Care Assistant at Narayana Hrudyalaya in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Talking about her future plans Pakuli says, “I want to complete my education and also want to study the two year’s diploma in Operation Theater Technician.” Pakuli is in a very happy state of mind and further adds, “Narayana Hrudyalaya is like my home. I have never imagined this life for me and I am feeling very nice.” Everyone at her village is happy to see Pakuli’s journey as a Clinical Care Assistant. Remembering the old days Pakuli said, “Once upon a time tablet was like a wonder to me but gradually it became my source of educational strength.” She is now a role model and an inspiration for many young girls from her and neighboring village.
