A Unique and Momentous Trade Fair to Showcase Creativity

The Trade Fair – a unique and a momentous event has held a special stance in the annals of DB Tech (Baruipur, West Bengal). The event was organized precisely to showcase the creativity, talent of DB Tech trainees on October 16, 2014. On the first day, they were assigned to design retail stores as a part of the project. The respective trainers took a glimpse of the small, stunning stores and gave marks to the students for putting up in reality what they have been imparted since day one. The second day with the excitement reaching higher heights, the students embellished their stores for the main event. Braving the challenges that stood galore, the trainees with the help of their respective

trainers brought about the mercurial change in the environment, i.e. the transformation of the less spacious building to a gorgeous and stunning Retail as well as Electrical industry. To heighten the industry experience of the visitors, a cordial welcome penned down board was put out. The place was made tidy, tranquil, and beautiful. However the aroma of the creativity, which was tantalizing and pervasive, to our utter surprise attracted the top brass to the honeycomb. The reverend exec Fr. T.L. Jose (State Coordinator, DB Tech) and the precursory youth delegate of the Kolkata Province Rev. Fr. Sunil made their way in to the “Live Heaven” extravaganza. The state office delegates after the visit took some time apart and congratulated the masterminds behind the show and brought to everyone’s notice that it was for the first time that such an event was carried out. It was a moment of honour for the Baruipur team - the trainers and the trainees, that the exec and the others acknowledged the team’s calibre, commitment and hard work with words of appreciation.

Commemoration of the First Anniversary of BASE Program Implementation

October 3 was undeniably a unique day for the Manikandam centre as it commemorated its first anniversary of BASE implementation with full zest and zeal. Rev. Fr. Agilan, SDB (Centre Head, DB Tech, Manikandam) felicitated the celebration. He delivered an inspirational speech about the mission of DB Tech. He said, “Today is a phenomenal day on which BASE programme was launched at DB Tech (Manikandam, Trichy) in the year 2013, with a scope of providing technical skills and job opportunity for the poor and marginalized youngsters of this region.”

Seema Jagadala is one of the simplest and quiet trainees of DB Tech (Sambalpur, Odisha). She is the only girl child in her family. Coming from the schedule caste background, the girl belongs to a very poor family. Her family is making their living possible by her father's meager income as a daily wage labourer in Chipolama located in Sambalpur district of Odisha. She has an elder brother, who discontinued his study because of financial constraints. She did complete her intermediate but was unable to continue her study due to financial condition of the family. One of these days, Seema came to know about DB Tech's 3month job oriented skill training program through the mobilization activities by community mobilizer in her village. Without any second thought, she decided to visit the centre for registration with her cousin. During the registration process, she learned that DB Tech is providing domain specific skill training in association with Poorest Area Civil Society (PACS) for school and college dropouts from socially excluded communities. Motivated to join the skill development program, she appeared the Interested Inventory Test and got selected for training in Sales and Marketing domain. She also attended the counseling session, where she learnt more about the programme. Before the training, Seema did not know the

It was launched with full delight by accommodating 42 students, who were the authentic tools in stretching out the Mission and Vision of DB Tech in and around the centre. It has gone through a remarkable growth for the past one year. Many including the Centre Head and the State Team appreciated the Centre Team for running the programme successfully. At present, it is running under three projects such as Quest Alliance for Retail Management domain, Accenture for Business Process Outsourcing domain and six months Visual Editing course under the Himayat project. Around 244 trainees have undergone the training program and above 80% of the trainees are placed in the industry. The whole celebration came to an end with a cutting of cake by Rev. Fr. Agilan, sdb. The staff is of the view that as we look back to the past year, we feel proud of our performance. This has enriched us to do a better in the coming days.

value of soft skills and life skills. But during the training not only she realized its importance but also wanted to gain each of the skills she is supposed to have being in the Retail and Sales industry. The training programme helped her discover skills like money management, time management, decision making, goal setting, perception of value with basic computer knowledge and domain related technical knowledge. The training developed her communication skills through industrial exposure visits. It changed her entire personality. At the end of three successful months of training, Seema attended the interview and got selected to join Annand World shopping mall located in western Odisha at a monthly salary Rs. 5000/- with accommodation. Regarding her performance, the HR Manager (Annand World) says, “Seema is a very dedicated, punctual, hardworking and also a responsible employee of our organization. She will soon be a Sales Manager at Annand world.” At her success, Seema confirms, “It is the DB Tech trainers and its market driven courses that have molded my persona and shaped my future. I am glad to be associated with DB Tech. It is because of DB Tech that today I am supporting my family financially. I am really grateful to DB Tech and PACS for giving such opportunities to people from schedule caste communities.”

SOME THINGS MONEY CAN'T BUY I was privileged to work with the deprived including tribal children in the hills of Sulthan Bathery (Wayanad). Call it my good fortune, karma or destiny that I got the opportunity to work with bubbling minds. For me it was the beginning of a different-sort of journey. After leaving a lucrative corporate career in Abu Dhabi, I came down to the hills of Wayanad to work with the BPL youth, on a Central Government project. I was as young as they were, with lot of cherished ambitions, in our chest. 90 days, 4 batches per year, 3 domains in every batch and around 40 students in each domain are trained continuously. I with my team of four trainers must have trained close to a thousand students in a span of two years time. Each day was a new experience, each day I confronted a new situation. Forget communicative English, counseling had become my 24/7 duty. The more I got acquainted with children, the more I felt blessed of all the opportunities I had got in life. We were being paid to build the character of India by educating the youth and giving them skill based training. Someone said that every creation begins with a vision; and I was glad that someone in the Ministry of Rural Development had thought about this project. My ‘grown-up (18-35 years)’ children were eager for change, for a renaissance; and they wanted to make their future certain. And I was determined to make their dreams come true by any means. Difficult part was to remove the years of inertia and rot that had set in the system. Convincing the priests about the kind of exposure these children needed including free browsing to face the world. My

salary was a pittance to what I had drawn before but the amount of satisfaction that I derived in being able to transform a child and save a family from penury was immense. It is hard to put in words. We spent hours together watching English movies (all time favorite movie of my children was ‘God’s must be crazy’ - complete laugh riot and no language/English required), motivational videos, health videos, sex education, singing (favourite was Titanic’s title song), dancing, playing football in the rain and slush, browsing the net and exposing them to the outside world including the experience of going in a lift/elevator. It was two way learning for them and for me. Children taught me Malayalam. So many new experiences for me like collecting mushrooms in the wild, cooking food on firewood (did not have cooking gas for a year), eating bamboo rice, plucking mangoes and rose apple (Chambaka) or for that matter taking care of the cows/buffaloes in the convent, or going out in the paddy fields or holding a rat snake in my hand and taking my boys to men’s salon (women don’t enter salon. LOL, really... But, I did!) for a haircut or helping Bethany sisters late night in stitching beads into the ceremonial dresses of the priests or taking my children to the restaurant to teach them how to eat with a spoon and a fork and eating jackfruit seeds roasted in the firewood or picking up dresses for my kids at the local store. I could in fact write a book and still not be done with it. My first true Onam celebration was at Bathery with my children. When I saw these pictures, loads of memories came alive. Wonder, if I would ever get a chance to meet all of you under one roof. All I can say. Thank You God for letting me become part of these children’s lives! And extremely proud that each one of you are spread across the globe!

DB Tech Celebrated the Richness of Indian Food on World Food Day On World Food Day, DB Tech (Aluva) conducted traditional food fest on October 16, 2014. On this occasion, students prepared traditional food items. Fr. Vinu Veluthepilly (Centre Head, DB Tech, Aluva) inaugurated the food fest in the presence of other Salesians. The students prepared around 70 dishes with proper description of each food content and nutritional values. The trainees explained about the recipes and importance of these dishes for the health. All the students participated well in the event by preparing food with a motherly concern. The varieties of food were delicious. The presence of almost 50 Rogationist Brothers graced the food fest with their encouragement. Fr. Vinu Veluthepilly appreciated the trainees for conducting the fest. It was a great attempt to bring back the forgotten taste of India and the richness of Indian food.
