LOCAL ISSUE ?

A

fter consideration of the findings of local issues and having met with various issues like constr u c t io n , discrimination, racism and equality in the Maltese community I concluded my

research and directed my research all towards racism and how the Maltese people engage themselves with different foreigners, immigrants and how they are treated.

ISSUES CONSTRUCTION DISCRIMINATION CRUELTY RACISM

Research Reports from local newspages

M

y research into racism started off by checking listings under “Racism Malta and this opened a wide area of studies and reports. The findings I found regarding racism where about everyday family lives, problems and legal migrants and if they are being accepted by the Maltese community and how the maltese might be afraid. The first report that I read was a university paper that was about

how immigrants strive to make Malta their second home, whereas others are less willing in the receiving society and seek to separate themselves from any interaction with these individuals. After reading this paper it opened some opportunities regarding my local issues to choose an individual area of studies rather than the whole study of racism. Gettingsome knowledge from the first paper of accepting different

societies I decided to focus on an issue that was about getting information and data of immigrants coming into Malta and those being sent back and how they are being treated. My research into this fell short and did not find enough data and instead I found multiple reports of immigrants and their camp sites and problems regarding how they affect the economy.

Quote While tracing back my steps towards racism papers I came across a picture of two men, one black and one white and they were both holding a huge card with text and an arrow pointing at his partner next to him that said, “Is his life worth less than mine” and “Is his life - worth

more than mine”. This quote caught my eye and inspired me to research into racism in a work space perspective, the general work environment of immigrants is a very hardworking environment and the immigrants are generally payed less than others.

IS HIS LIFE WORTH MORE THAN MINE IS HIS LIFE WORTH L E S S THAN MINE

After some research into how much immigrants are payed it fell short as well and could not find what I was looking for but during the process of this research I came across multiple cases of people that are Maltese or are foreigners and their cases with people treating them differently. This Enlighted me to make my issue in a general way and show my message of racism through these people’s experience in Malta and the general case of the Maltese community treating others differently. After figuring out what the final

issue was going to be I started reading all the saved reports of these people’s cases and they all mention a different way of expressing their experience with different Maltese people. Encounters of people shouting at them and not letting them enter in an establishment are 2 of them. These encounters where made to multiple different people whether it was a woman, man or teenagers, so I decided to aim my target audience to the general community as multiple different ages had interactions with different colored people.

Gathering all my information I moved into my medium and from the beginning of the task I wanted to do something different and I decided to develop a website that showcases the people’s cases. I researched some protests website’s and found protests such as police cruelty and one called “blacklivesmatter.com” that helped

a lot towards my own website. Black lives matter was a website which showed updates around the world and all about taking action and getting justice. I wanted to display a quote when entering the website so finding

the quote beforehand did help me a lot, after some trail and errors I managed to split the quote into 4 pieces and made them scroll in different directions with the words “Less” and “More” highlighted in a yellow color.

Analysis

The first view is a full screen of the text scrolling and then you could scroll down or press the text to go down. You are displayed with a sub-title and a short description and after a set of personal cases.

These personal cases are taken from news websites and are displayed in a short description of the story that they encountered. After the description of the case there is a “more” button which a window comes up with an illustration made from quotes and words that they have written in their reports. These illustrations are made from their faces or objects related to their stories. The typography used bold and expressive to express the message that these people matter, and we are all worth the same. The font’s used throughout the website was a bold one and, in the illustrations, multiple fonts where used to help express the artwork. I kept the color scheme of the website black and white mainly to express racism and a yellow was used to highlight two

to express the quote and text trough the website a heavy weight font had to be used to make the message clear to the users. The illustrations where used as an expressive artwork to represent the type of struggles these people pass through every day. As a color scheme through out the project it was kept mainly black and white with some touches of yellow. As improvements they could have been done into into the experimentation of the text and font of the website design for the quote and title. Some other improvements into the cases could have been better if images could have been implemented into the website.
