SAILING EXPLORER YACHT PANGAEA

Sunreef Ambassador Mike Horn is a South African-born adventurer, explorer, and motivational speaker who is best known for his numerous expeditions to remote and extreme environments around the world. In 2008, Horn embarked on an expedition aboard the Pangaea sailing yacht, a custom-built vessel designed specifically for scientific research and exploration.

The Pangaea expedition was a four-year circumnavigation, during which Horn and his team conducted scientific research, explored some of the world’s most remote and inaccessible locations, and engaged in environmental education and awareness campaigns. The expedition was designed to highlight the fragility of the earth’s ecosystems and the urgent need for sustainable practices and conservation efforts.

Throughout the journey, Horn and his team faced a range of challenges, including navigating treacherous waters, extreme weather conditions, and encounters with dangerous wildlife. The team completed their mission, traveling over 100,000 nautical miles and visiting 63 countries along the way.

In addition to its scientific and environmental goals, the Pangaea expedition also served as a platform for Horn to inspire and motivate others to pursue their own dreams and push their limits. Today, Horn continues to travel the world, sharing his experiences and advocating for environmental conservation and sustainable living practices.

After her circumnavigation project, Pangaea was in need of refit. This is when Mike Horn and his team decided to entrust the task to Sunreef Yachts. All the renovations that were carried out were aimed at making Pangaea safer and more comfortable.

The Sunreef team focused on optimizing the living space onboard and providing a more comfortable navigation experience for Pangaea’s passengers. The refit included the addition of two double cabins to Pangaea’s layout. The cabins were custom-designed and equipped with voluminous storage.

One of the major challenges of the refit was to reduce the generator and engine noise levels on board. To achieve this, the engine room was given a new soundproofing with airtight seals isolating it from the living areas.

In addition to soundproofing, the refit also included improvements to the yacht’s climate control system. All ceilings were changed to materials resisting extreme humidity and cold conditions, and the dashboard trim was completely renovated.

To reduce energy consumption, new LED lights were installed throughout the yacht. Overall, the refit of the Pangaea yacht was aimed at providing a more luxurious and comfortable experience for passengers while also improving the yacht’s performance and energy efficiency.

Mike Horn’s upcoming expedition, named “What’s Left,” will be carried out aboard Pangaea. The aim of the expedition is to return to selected destinations after 50 years to assess the impact of environmental changes in these areas. The journey will begin with a trip to the Arctic, followed by visits to the Amazon, Patagonia, Antarctica, New Zealand, Australia, and Asia. Exploring North Siberia and Alaska will allow the team to complete a comprehensive global research.

Through this expedition, Mike Horn and his team hope to gain a better understanding of the changes that have occurred in these remote areas over the past half-century and raise awareness of the importance of preserving these natural spaces for future generations.

Mike Horn is a brand ambassador for the Sunreef Explorer range, a cutting-edge catamaran line designed to go anywhere, from lush tropical islands to the most extreme latitudes. The Sunreef Explorers can remain self-sufficient for months and offer all the autonomy needed for worldwide exploration in ultimate comfort, safety, and luxury.
