If you’ve ever been to a cocktail bar or a trendy place, you’ve probably had the chance to order your favorite cocktail: a negroni, a margarita, a Cosmopolitan...

When it comes to cocktails, you’re spoilt for choice!

But not everyone knows that mixology is an art that has evolved only in recent decades and is now fashionable in all fashion clubs.

But what is mixology?

Mixology derives from the English “mixology” (it is not really translatable into Spanish), and refers to that art or craft of mixing liquors and other complementary drinks to create a unique experience in a cocktail: the mixologist is an artist of the drink, who knows how to perfectly reproduce any type of cocktail and often creates his own.

The art of creating drinks certainly has very ancient roots: from ancient times men loved to invent drinks of all kinds, from wine mixed with spices and aromas, to the first versions of beer. During the time of the ancient Romans, for example, the wine produced was actually very strong and concentrated, and therefore had to be diluted: thus many variations of the “nectar of the gods” were born, with ingredients such as honey, cloves, saffron, fruits, and many others.

However, mixology as we understand it today was born after the industrial revolution, with the birth of spirits and distillates created with great skill. Since the nineteenth century authentic cocktails begin to be born: the first concept of “cocktail” was born in Great Britain, and was similar to a punch, with fruit juices and spices. The current term is defined in 1806 in New York, when the newspaper “The Balance and Columbian Repository” states that the cocktail is “a liquor with a stimulating composition of any kind of sugar, water and bitters, commonly called bitter slingshot”.

In 1862 it was Jerry Thomas (called “Professor” Thomas), a skilled Connecticut-born American bartender, who finally wrote the first cocktail recipe book, “The Bartender’s Guide,” a useful encyclopedia of mixed drinks.

With the advent of industrially produced ice, bartending also evolved, until the arrival of Prohibition in America, which curbed alcohol consumption but did not completely stop its advance.

After World War II, American-born cocktails suffer the fascination of foreign countries, evolving further; in the twentieth century, however, some of the even more famous cocktails such as the Manhattan or the Martini were born.

The Mixology style was introduced more recently, especially among the European. Compared to the Flair, it has a decidedly more serious and elegant appeal, proposing a true return to the origins, thanks to the recovery of pouring methods from a less recent but not unfascinating history, on the contrary.

The techniques of cocktails basically include the classics of the combined and it is known: man is accustomed to mixing and experimenting from the beginning of time, using what he has available at that precise moment. The methods underlying this style were carried forward within the Arab world, then perfected during the Renaissance and updated during the Industrial Revolution.

Today, mixology is widespread around the world, bringing a typical factor from the historical point of view of globalization, for drinks made on a planetary scale but declined each time with a different local mood.

Even today, the art of cocktails is increasingly famous and evolved, so much so that the classic bartender can evolve to become the most refined mixologist: an artist of alcoholic beverages capable of recreating classics and reinventing increasingly particular cocktails. Another addition to this profession is flair cocktails, a complex of acrobatic techniques used to prepare drinks; these techniques, quite complicated and often difficult to master, include throwing bottles, serving several drinks at the same time, and much more. However, flair cocktails should never lose sight of the quality and goodness of the cocktail it prepares to favor the acrobatic show.

Although more recent, flair mixology is also very popular, and this technique also owes its birth to the great bartender Jerry Thomas.
