Pronounce the 20 most popular wines in the world
At a party or on a date?
There are more than 3 thousand varieties or strains of wine grapes in the world. There are 20 that people always pronounce wrong.
Pinot Noir is the most mispronounced; followed by Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Show off at your next social event! Here we tell you how to pronounce them correctly.
The most festive time of the year is approaching and sometimes, whether because you are on a date or in a work meeting, you have to order a wine. For this reason, Preply, the online language learning platform, analyzed which wines people are looking to pronounce most frequently and made a quick guide to ordering them correctly.
Two secrets were key in this process. The first was to investigate in search engines which wines people searched for the most to find out their pronunciation. Second, and most importantly, understand the linguistic background of each
wine to reveal its correct pronunciation and sound like a professional sommelier.
“The key to the correct pronunciation of these different types of wine, and drinks in general, is knowing in which language their name originates. For example, Tempranillo seems like it should be pronounced ‘temp-pruh-NILL-o’ to an English speaker, but knowing that it is a Spanish wine tells us that we should follow Spanish pronunciation rules.
That means the double ‘LL’ is actually pronounced like the ‘Y,’ which gives us ‘tem-pruh-NEE-yo,’” said Yolanda del Peso, marketing specialist at Preply.
Research revealed that Pinot Noir is the most mispronounced wine in the world. In this case, Pinot Noir is derived from the French pine (pin) and black (noir), due to the intense red color of the grapes and their pineapple-shaped clusters. So the correct pronunciation is: “PEE-noh nwar”.
The second and third places in pronunciation searches are: Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon, whose correct pronunciation is “Soh-VIN-yohn blan” and “kab-er-nay sohVIN-yohn”, respectively.
Other commonly mispronounced wines include: Pinot Grigio (PEE-no-GREE-jo), Riesling (rees-ling), Prosecco (prohSEHK-koh) and Sangiovese (SAN-joe-veh-see).
According to Preply research, these are the 20 types of wine that people often mispronounce around the world.
