Autumn 2018

gala

Welcome

Gala Theatre Online All of our shows are available to book online at www.galadurham.co.uk

Such is the importance of the arts in peoples’ lives, that despite his success, the playwright Jim Cartwright still runs five acting classes a week, in a room above a charity shop on Chorley High Street. He believes that the lack of working class actors is an issue, and his ‘quiet revolution’ sets about tackling the problem head-on. As one of the most vital voices in British theatre, he recognises the necessity of the arts, and gives an outlet to those working class voices, not only through his weekly classes, but through his beautifully observed and brilliant plays. We are delighted that Jim Cartwright’s play Two is our next Gala production, and we are proud that we are creating it in the heart of Durham, with the very best regional talent. Two is the centrepiece of our autumn season, and we hope you find plenty more to enjoy among the events we have on offer over the coming months.

FILM

The Producers Amongst STUDIOCANAL’s extensive library, The Producers holds a special place as one of the greatest satirical comedies of all-time and has been preserved in the American Film Registry for its standing in Film History. Renowned as one of Mel Brook’s masterpieces, in 1968, it won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and the late great Gene Wilder received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor before the film was adapted into a Broadway play that won 12 Tony awards and ahead of it being remade for the screen in 2005.

Sunday 5 August, 7.30pm | £10

Hailed as one of the greatest satirical comedies of all time, The Producers celebrates its 50th anniversary; reissued in glorious 4K with an introductory Q&A with director Mel Brooks.

The story follows Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel) as a washed up Broadway producer forced to romance old ladies to finance his plays. When timid accountant Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder) is brought in to do his books, he inadvertently reveals to Bialystock that under the right circumstances, a producer could make more money with a flop than a hit. Bialystock cajoles Bloom into helping him achieve this end and together they come up with what they consider to be a sure-fire disaster waiting to happen – a musical version of Adolf and Eva’s love story entitled ‘Springtime For Hitler’.

SPECIAL TICKET OFFER

TWO By Jim Cartwright Directed by Tom Wright Designed by Hannah Sibai Tuesday 2 to Saturday 6 October, 7.30pm (+2.30pm on Thursday and Saturday) | £15 (£13 concession), £12 Gala Members, First Night & Matinee

Over one evening, we see a microcosm of working-class life through the regulars of a northern pub. It’s a place where people celebrate and mourn; secrets are shared and resentments simmer. At its heart are the landlord and landlady, who are at war with each other. He has an eye on the money, she the gossipy heart of the bar. Together they miss nothing, and with quick-witted northern charm, they’re in their element. Until they are forced to examine their own lives. The play is written for just two actors, who play all fourteen characters; from a small boy, to a frightened girlfriend, and a barroom Romeo. Through these characters, we witness failed aspirations, unfulfilled lives and enormous spirit. Following Gala’s recent production of Talking Heads, we are delighted to present the work of Lancashire-born Jim Cartwright. His plays (including The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Road and Bed) are all perfectly attuned to northern working class life, and Two effortlessly demonstrates his funny and beautifully observed work. ‘A sharp, salty, quick fire evocation of the surface gaiety and underlying melancholia of English pub life’ The Guardian

Thursday 18 October, 7.30pm | £28.50

Saturday 20 October, 7.30pm | £10

Sunday 21 October, 8.00pm | £22.50

Things have gone a smidge surreal since the Madness frontman was a twelve year old in shorts on the tough streets of north London: vertigo on the roof of Buckingham Palace, nearly blowing the closing ceremony of the Olympics, the embarrassing stuff that happened at Glastonbury.

Alan Hinkes is one of just a handful of people to have conquered the 8000-metre peaks - the world’s 14 highest mountains and pinnacle of mountaineering achievement. This new documentary from acclaimed outdoor filmmaker Terry Abraham, captures the spirit and ambition of Hinkes, conveying his fierce passion for the great outdoors. A dazzling global travelogue, this is a funny and fascinating study of an older adventurer’s undying passion and refusal to grow old gracefully. A Q&A with Terry Abraham follows the screening.

Join impressionist Jon Culshaw and legendary comedy producer Bill Dare for an evening of unscripted, unrehearsed, spontaneous comedy and conversation as politicians, sports personalities and celebrities are up for a roasting. The audience help choose which characters appear and what direction the show takes, and Jon reveals the secrets of mimicry.

In this business you can be washed up at any minute, so how has he managed to get away with it for so long? With help from Deano, his trusty pianist, Suggs tells his story in words and music with the help of some Madness classics and a couple more what he wrote, all on himself.

With a few surprises thrown in for good measure, The Great British Take Off is topical, satirical, anecdotal and never the same show twice.

Triple Bill: Dido and Aeneas, Jonas & I Will Not Speak Monday 22 October, 7.30pm Director Seb Harcombe conjures a Jacobean night-world in Dido and Aeneas, where the abandoned Dido’s call to ‘remember me!’ haunts in Henry Purcell’s melodies. Priest-composer Giacomo Carissimi made a series of short musical dramas, depicting Biblical scenes where humans wrestle with God. Using Carissimi’s sensuous music, Bernadette Iglich directs Jonas, the story of Jonah and the whale. I Will Not Speak showcases the music of prince-murderer-composer Carlo Gesualdo. Eight singers perform his most intense madrigals in a landscape of shadows and candlelight.

Radamisto Tuesday 23 October, 7.30pm Handel’s moving Radamisto tells the dramatic story of a royal family in old Armenia, locked in mortal conflict. Whilst championing faithfulness and marital love, Radamisto has a gallery of moral depravity and intolerance. Directed by James Conway, this new production is designed by Adam Wiltshire and inspired by the art of early Christian Armenia. Sung in English (Dido and Aeneas), Latin (Jonas) and Italian (I Will Not Speak and Radamisto) with English surtitles. Join us for a post-show discussion after Monday’s Triple Bill performance. The Durham Hymns Lyrics: Carol Ann Duffy Music: Orlando Gough, Jessica Curry, Jonathan Bates Originally commissioned by the Northern Regional Brass Band Trust in partnership with Durham County Council

SPECIAL TICKET OFFER

Sunday 11 November, 2.30pm and 7.30pm | £25 (£23 concession) A century after the end of the First World War, the anniversary is marked with a reprise of The Durham Hymns, originally premiering at Durham Cathedral during BRASS Festival 2016. With specially commissioned lyrics by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, using the letters, diaries and experiences of real people living in the county during the war years as inspiration, The Durham Hymns are performed by the Reg Vardy Brass Band, the Centenary Community Choir, and celebrated choral ensemble, Voices of Hope. The Durham Hymns not only commemorate the sacrifice of those who died, but the courage and resilience of those left behind. This event also sees the beginning of a community programme, using the performance as a starting point to interrogate the process of peace. ‘A simple moment of pleasure became a thing of enduring beauty by deceptively simple means - the most powerful art often seems simple but can take great skill to achieve’ The Journal ‘This was a performance of distinction, beautifully rehearsed, superbly conducted and magnificently played’ The Church Times

The Madness of George III

Carl Hutchinson

Presented by RSC Live

Presented by NT Live

I Know I Shouldn’t Behave Like This…

Wednesday 14 November, 7.00pm | £15 (£13 concession), £10 Gala Members

Tuesday 20 November, 7.00pm | £15 (£13 concession), £10 Gala Members

Troilus and Cressida swear they will always be true to one another. But in the seventh year of the siege of Troy their innocence is tested, and exposed to the savage corrupting influence of war, with tragic consequences.

It’s 1786 and King George III is the most powerful man in the world, but his behaviour is becoming increasingly erratic as he succumbs to fits of lunacy. With the King’s mind unravelling at a dramatic pace, ambitious politicians and the scheming Prince of Wales threaten to undermine the power of the crown, and expose the fine line between a king and a man. Starring Olivier Awardwinners Mark Gatiss and Adrian Scarborough, this performance is broadcast live from Nottingham Playhouse.

Virtuoso percussionist Evelyn Glennie collaborates with RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran to create a satirical, futuristic version of a world resounding with the rhythm of battle.

Friday 30 November, 7.30pm | £15 From buying a house to having kids, Carl takes his unique adolescent approach to grown up issues with his hilarious stories and observations. As seen on Comedy Central’s Stand Up Central, The Chris Ramsey Show and following a sold-out 2017 tour, Geordie comedian Carl Hutchinson is back with a brand new show.

A Gala Theatre production

Thursday 29 November to Sunday 30 December Various times | £7-£8, £28-£30 family ticket Once upon a Christmas there was a toyshop. The sort of shop where warm light flooded onto the street outside, inviting children of all ages to choose their favourite toy. The sort of shop where you could feel the magic as soon as you walked inside. But this year the lights are a little dimmer, the magic a little weaker and inside there is a toymaker who is thinking about giving up. Luckily there are two magical creatures who won’t let that happen, not on their watch! Join us to see if they are successful on their Christmas mission. Living Under a Cathedral Durham Architecture Since 1500 Adrian Green Monday 15 October 2018, 5.45pm | FREE The City of Durham has been anchored around its cathedral church for over a thousand years. This talk explores the consequences of Henry VIII’s closure of Durham Priory, and the development of the City in the centuries since. It explains why we have the buildings that still stand today in Durham’s historic streets. Adrian Green is an architectural historian at Durham University, and author of Building for England: John Cosin’s Architecture in Renaissance Durham and Cambridge (2016).

Portraits are probably the most accessible and popular form of art. In an age of celebrity, they have come into greater prominence. So what can we learn from them, and how should portraiture be defined? This talk outlines some of the ways in which portraits work and why they are important. Ludmilla Jordanova is Director of the Centre for Visual Arts and Culture at Durham University, and was a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery between 2001 and 2009.

Shildon is the world’s first railway town, and Locomotion (part of the Science Museum Group) operates as part of the National Railway Museum, York. This discussion looks at how museums actually work, what goes on behind the scenes at Shildon and York, and what their vision is for the future. With Judith McNicol (Director of the NRM, York); Sarah Price (Head of Locomotion); Andrew McLean (Assistant Director of the NRM, York); and Charlotte Kingston (Head of Interpretation and Design, the NRM York). These events are free but booking is recommended. 33
