Welcome
Gala Theatre Online All of our shows are available to book online at www.galadurham.co.uk
We are always trying to expand the scope of the events we offer at Gala, and at this time last year, we were announcing the very first Durham Adventure Festival. This three-day festival celebrated the outdoors, and those people who have the determination to get outside and undertake adventures. We were delighted with the response to the inaugural event, from both our regular audiences, and those who visited Gala for the first time. This season, we are delighted that Durham Adventure Festival returns. We have loads of plans to make this year bigger and better, showcasing the very best in exploration and endurance. We want to inspire more people to explore and enjoy outdoor adventures, and we can’t wait to share our ideas with you. And on page 28, we also have a sneak peek at details of our next Gala production, which comes later in 2019. Following on from our successful staging of Jim Cartwright’s Two in October, we are delighted to be producing a new version of Teechers by John Godber. This fresh and funny comedy will bring back memories for anyone who remembers their time at secondary school. We look forward to welcoming you to Gala.
You can also find out the latest updates about our upcoming shows by ‘liking’ us on Facebook at facebook.com/galadurham or by following us on Twitter at twitter.com/galadurham or Instagram at Instagram/gala_durham

Pablo Picasso is one of the greatest artists of all time - and right up until his death in 1973 he was the most prolific of artists. Many films have dealt with these later years - the art, the affairs and the wide circle of friends. Too long ignored, it is time to look at the early years of Picasso; the upbringing and the learning that led to his extraordinary achievements. Working closely with all three Picasso Museums in Malaga, Barcelona and Paris, this film explains how he rose to great heights.

SPECIAL TICKET OFFER
By John Godber Directed by Tom Wright Designed by Hannah Sibai Monday 6 to Saturday 11 May, 7.30pm (exc. Wednesday) (+1.00pm on Tuesday and Thursday, and 6.00pm on Wednesday) | £10 - £16 Three school leavers, Salty, Hobby and Gail decide to perform an end of term tribute about their time in secondary school. Telling the hilarious story of an idealistic new teacher in his perilous first days inside a local comprehensive school, their play is based on their own drama teacher who ignites their passion for the stage with his idealism and belief. This fast-moving and entertaining comedy is hugely evocative for anyone who has endured life at a modern secondary school. Teechers brings to life the school bully, feared by teachers and pupils alike; Barry, the kid who never brings his PE kit; and the Headmistress, whose main priority is the annual Gilbert and Sullivan production. The teachers are as ambivalent and mixed-up as the kids, and everyone’s counting down the days until they can get out. Following recent successes with Educating Rita, Talking Heads and Two, Gala are delighted to be bringing this witty and well observed play to the stage. John Godber is the third most performed playwright in the UK, behind William Shakespeare and Alan Ayckbourn, and best known for his observational comedy (Bouncers, Up n’ Under). Written in 1984 and first performed by the Hull Truck Theatre Company, Teechers is still thoroughly modern, and as fresh and relevant as when it was created.

Tuesday 5 February
Tuesday 12 February
Gothic architecture was, and remains today, imprinted upon Durham’s townscape courtesy of the Cathedral, Castle, and a host of churches. This talk discusses the often overlooked continuation of the Gothic tradition in eighteenth- and early nineteenthcentury Durham. In particular it explores architectural work from repairs through to ‘improvements’ done on the Castle and Cathedral, as well the construction of the University from the 1830s onwards.
From the exotic lapis lazuli and Egyptian blue, to poisonous arsenic yellow, recent scientific investigation has identified the inks and pigments used in many of Durham’s fabulous illuminated manuscripts: this talk will summarise the methods, the findings, and their implications.

Tuesday 12 March
A lecture exploring the innovative architecture built in County Durham between the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and King George III. County Durham was a wealthy region because of the coal trade to London. Coal owners built impressive mansions with landscaped parks; the clergy rebuilt their rectories and parish churches, while lawyers, merchants, farmers and craftsmen rebuilt their homes in ways that transformed the towns and villages of County Durham. This lecture illustrates the surprising wealth of architecture surviving from this period.
Over a century and a half has passed since the close of the U.S. Civil War, yet Americans continue to battle over its meaning and its legacies. The issue turned violent in Charlottesville in summer 2017 when a mob of white supremacists and counter-protestors clashed over a monument to the Confederate general Robert E. Lee. Kevin Waite, who teaches American history at Durham University, offers an insider’s perspective on this controversy and how it continues to shape politics and feed the culture wars in Trump’s America.
The Oriental Museum is one of the jewels in Durham’s crown. Three members of the University’s staff, who know and love the collections, will offer insights into how they came to Durham and some of the Museum’s most significant, fascinating and beautiful objects.

Gala Gallery Situated next to our Box Office, the new Gala Gallery presents changing exhibitions of modern and contemporary art by regional, national and international artists, making associations with the context of the Gala Theatre programme.
Looking in Wonderland Saturday 17 November to Sunday 13 January This exhibition is a selection of the John Tenniel’s best illustrations from both Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and what Alice found there in which the creative genius of both Carroll and Tenniel is shown at its best. Both stories were instant hits with children and adults alike upon publication, and from the very start, it was agreed that a major part of their success was due to the unique and imaginative illustrations by Tenniel. Despite there now being many hundreds of artists worldwide who have illustrated Alice, Tenniel’s illustrations remain the definitive ones. The original drawings by Tenniel were made on wooden blocks and then engraved by commercial engravers in London and the prints on show printed directly from these blocks - are perfect examples of the skill of both illustrator and engraver.
Programme highlights for 2019 include a retrospective of one of the region’s most famous and celebrated artists, Norman Cornish. For further information on all our exhibitions please visit galadurham.co.uk/gala-gallery Opening Times: Monday to Saturday 10.00am - 8.30pm and Sunday 2.30pm - 8.30pm 32
