gala

Welcome We are really proud of our pantomime. Since we started producing the show back in 2008, we have built our Christmas production into one of the most successful pantos in the North East. And we know you love the show, because you return year after year in greater numbers. It’s great fun to put together, and we always try to throw in some surprises to keep it fresh and fun. We think this year’s show will be our best yet. But this year, we have another Christmas show, produced inhouse by the Gala team, especially for our youngest customers. Mrs Claus’ Kitchen is the story of a mischievous gingerbread man and his adventures, which uses live performance, lots of audience interaction and a big dollop of magic to bring the festive season alive for the under 5s. We can’t wait for you to see this new show, and we know you’ll grow to love it as much as you love our panto. We look forward to seeing you at one (or both!) of our Christmas shows this year.

A double bill of plays about Sunderland AFC

There’s Something About Gary…

Presented by Cranked Anvil

Wednesday 13 September, 7.30pm | £16

Saturday 9 September, 7.30pm | £15 (£13 concession), £12 Gala Members

Gary likes to write jokes. An awful lot of them. Also, he appears to have something in his hair. He thinks a good joke should be like a drunk Glaswegian, short and punchy. He loves each and every gag, and you can’t help but be carried away by his infectious charm.

Cornered

Wise Men Say

On 24 March 1985, a dream comes true for a young football player from Sunderland. Just 18 years old, Dave Corner runs out onto the hallowed Wembley turf, to play in a cup final for his beloved home team. Less than 90 minutes later, a slip up on the pitch turns the dream into his worst nightmare. BBC Look North’s Jeff Brown finds out what happened to Davey Corner after that fateful day.

In 1997, Jimmy’s beloved Roker Park was pulled down. What could possibly replace this ground? This hallowed turf? This sanctuary? Nothing, so Jimmy thinks. But then rises a Phoenix from the flames – a Stadium to bring new dreams, new hope, new light. This bittersweet comedy charts one man’s journey through 20 years.

The Lake Poets is the alias for singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Martin Longstaff from Sunderland. His honeyed voice glides over beautifully intricate guitar riffs to create a sound that soothes.

That Thea Gilmore’s latest album is as ethereal as it is thought-provoking, as bewitching as it is bold, will come as no surprise to her army of admirers. Since releasing her debut as a teenager nearly 20 years ago, the Oxfordshireraised, Cheshire-based singer and songwriter has gained global acclaim for making music not only of extraordinary beauty, but of rare honesty and insight.

This sound is coupled with lyrics of love and heartbreak. His lyrics have the capacity to devastate and the gorgeous melodies contrast this feeling to foster a profound sense of catharsis.

Durham Book Festival Fringe Event

Jason is hitting the road once again in the autumn, only this time, it’s a tour with a twist, with intimate gigs providing a unique opportunity to see him like you’ve never seen him before.

Friday 13 October, 7.30pm | £10 (£8 concession)

At aged 49½ and with a wealth of tantalising tales under his belt, this autobiographical show will take Jason’s looming 50th birthday, as its starting point, and will zigzag back and forth through his life. Hear some new stories (and possibly one or two you’ve heard before!) plus some of the songs you know and love.

So imagine this. You are 14 years old and you are a drag queen. It’s golden stilettos, ripped fishnets, shoulder pads, and neon bobs. It’s expression. It’s glamour. It’s power. It’s Doncaster, 2009. This show combines drag performance with theatrical storytelling and it’s about being young, having that fire in your belly and seeing no limitations or rules. It’s the uncertainty of your own identity and the creation of a new one. It’s about finding a safe place between the two. It’s a reflection. An exorcism. A scrapbook.

There has never been a better time to be an American comedian in the UK. Hall’s precision dismantling of the tenuous relationship between two countries is as freewheeling and deadly accurate as ever. Hoedown begins as a withering dissection of Trump’s America, but ends up being a celebration of Americana. There’s standup, improvised ballads, cracking good musicianship, and ultimately a hilarious, footstomping, good time to be had by all. Even if you don’t own a hoe. “Blissfully Funny” The Guardian

Part I: The Death of Pompey Monday 23 October, 7.30pm Having defeated his rival Pompey, can Caesar now survive the machinations of King of Egypt Ptolemy and his sister Cleopatra?

Part II: Cleopatra’s Needle Tuesday 24 October, 7.30pm The Battle for the Kingdom of the Nile reaches a crisis, as Pompey’s family is enslaved, Caesar is presumed dead, and Cleopatra is made captive by her brother. Both parts sung in Italian with English surtitles. Pre-show talks will take place at 6.30pm on both nights. 22

Tales & Tunes

Beyond the Barricade has delighted audiences throughout the UK and mainland Europe for more than a decade, with its exciting concert portrayal of the greatest songs in musical theatre, all performed totally live. Recreating original West End/Broadway musical hit songs with amazing authenticity, this cast of past principal performers from Les Miserables, present a blockbusting two hour show which is now established as the nation’s favourite musical theatre concert.

Celebrating his 50th year as a professional musician, Rick made chart history when his Piano Portraits album became the first solo piano album to enter the UK’s Top 10. Initially inspired by the unprecedented reaction to his performance of David Bowie’s Life On Mars on BBC Radio 2 in early 2016, Piano Portraits features instrumental versions of hits Rick originally performed on Space Oddity, Morning Has Broken and Wonderous Stories as well of others specifically chosen for their wonderful melodies, including Stairway To Heaven, Help and Eleanor Rigby.

Thursday 26 October, 7.30pm | £17.50 These artists’ work grows from the landscape, language, history and strange beauty of the north. With David’s storytelling and Kathryn’s love of the traditions of her native Northumbria, the poetic power of language and music combine. On stage Kathryn and David are joined by accordionist and clog dancer Amy to bring you a memorable evening of stories, songs and, of course, irrepressible music.

Friday 27 October, 7.30pm | £10 in advance, £12 on the door

Saturday 28 October, 8.00pm | £15

The world’s No1 Eric Clapton tribute band makes a welcome return to Durham with this ‘homecoming’ performance. Featuring classic songs including Wonderful Tonight, Tears in Heaven, Crossroads, I Shot The Sheriff, Lay Down Sally, Cocaine and of course Layla. The band’s ability to re-create Clapton’s electrifying stage performances really ignites the audience’s imagination.

Said The Maiden are Jess Distill, Hannah Elizabeth and Kathy Pilkinton, three friends who discovered a mutual love of folk music. From tentatively performing a few songs at their local folk club in 2012 the group soon secured support and headline slots at folk clubs and festivals around the country, as well as supporting many fantastic artists including The Fisherman’s Friends.

One of the UK’s most in-demand comics, Carl is set to perform his brand new show where you can expect killer gags, highly entertaining stories and the trademark twisted logic that has made Carl a must-see fixture in the comedy world. From tales of pulling sickies as a teacher to his family upbringing and wrestling with his favourite vices, this new show is easily the most brutally honest and hilariously self-deprecating outing yet for this Geordie comedian. “An absolute must… the next big thing!” Skinny

Sarah Millican is not a control freak, she’s a control enthusiast. She even controls her own insults, see? Do you arrange the nights out? Are you in charge of passports on holiday? Then so are you! Whether you’re sorting the tickets for this show or turning up when you’re told to, welcome. You’ll learn about rescue men, farting in hospital pants, what can happen at a bra fitting, the benefits of casserole, plus tips on how to talk to shop assistants and the correct way to eat a biscuit.

In October 2016, writers and broadcaster Stuart Maconie walked 300 miles from Jarrow to London retracing the famous Jarrow Crusade 80 years on, through a divided, complex country that echoes 1936 in many ways. From choral evensong to curry house, from austerity to affluence, from Wearside to Westminster, join him on an entertaining, impassioned, enlightening journey through Britain then and now.
