Area Action Partnerships in your area What’s an Area Action Partnership?
We have 14 Area Action Partnerships (AAPs) throughout County Durham and they all have a budget to spend on local projects decided by local people.
On the board Rosemary Morris joined Derwent Valley Partnership five years ago. Each AAP has a board made up of local people, elected members from the county, town and parish councils, NHS, police and fire brigade, community and voluntary groups.
How can I get involved? You can get involved with your local AAP by becoming a member of the forum. Each year, AAP forum members decide on the local priorities for the area – the big issues they want to tackle. The AAPs then use their budgets to support projects working in these key areas. Local priorities vary, but can include helping people into employment and improving their job prospects; town centre regeneration; supporting voluntary and community projects; community safety; and, providing opportunities for children and young people. 4
Why did you want to get involved? I wanted to support my own community in the Derwent Valley and through the Derwent Valley Partnership it has been possible to achieve so much.
What difference do you think the AAP has made? AAPs link to many organisations which can make a difference and are very much focussed on local challenges. Each AAP sets its own priorities and works towards finding solutions, which is very rewarding. I’m particularly proud of the work our AAP has done around employment, education, training and regeneration. We‘ve made links with local employers, the Academy and FE College and local training and education providers. We’ve also undertaken a skills audit with local companies to find out from them the range and levels of skills required. We’re planning events with local employers and trainers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and hope this will inspire young people.
What would you say to people who are thinking of getting involved? If you have the skills, experience and local knowledge you feel would benefit your AAP then get in touch.

Helped organise and fund community events including Diddycon Comic Convention, Market Activity Week, Classic Car Show in the Riverside Park and the Christmas Festival and Lights Switch On. • Supported the town centre Northumbria In Bloom award entry, helping to achieve a Silver Gilt. • Supported a ‘Wheels to Work’ programme. This helps newly employed local people get to work by Durham AAP providing affordable transport in the first months of their job. The Chief Constable of Devon & Cornwall, who has a responsibility for leading the police nationally on engagement with young people, and other AAPs are all hoping to learn from the project.

Gave £10,000 of grants to 13 local community groups to support local projects and activities. Supported Healthy Horizons which encourages people aged 65 and above to improve their health and wellbeing by taking part in communitybased activities. So far 256 people have joined and four new activity programmes were created locally. Supported Sambarama! Where 485 local children took part in drama and samba drumming workshops before showing their families what they’d learned in a show stopping performance.

Paid for Leisureworks to run a free children’s summer holiday football programme - attended by an average of 70 children each day. Supported the creation of ten apprenticeship opportunities for unemployed 16-24 year olds from the Stanley AAP area. Funded a volunteer driver scheme for the Stanley area, which sees volunteers use their own vehicles to provide a door-to-door transport service to vulnerable people.

Together with the young farmers of Weardale, we have designed a training programme to support farming communities. The popular small grants scheme has seen over 20 groups benefit, ranging from football tournaments to a creative writing group that has produced podcasts. Developing mini credit unions with local groups and schools, where cash is protected by the FSA, to set up savings clubs and so families can obtain loans at reasonable rates. Two further young people from Weardale will get the chance of an apprenticeship with the council’s Culture and Sport team.

Our small business support project with CDC Enterprise has helped sustain 91 businesses, safeguard 21 jobs and created a further 39 new jobs. Supported Hamsteels Community Centre to secure £483,348 from the Big Lottery Fund Reaching Communities to rebuild their centre. Supported the Manage £ Better scheme which has visited 5,280 homes across County Durham and saved older residents £534,808 in home efficiency bills.

Locate (www.durhamlocate.org.uk) is a new website containing a wide range of care and support products and services to help people live as independently as possible. It lists options to support people to live in their own home, voluntary services, support for carers, day care opportunities and residential care information.
In addition, the ‘Getting out and about’ section of the site lists clubs, sports and social activities to keep people active and involved in their local community. Waste and recycling We collect rubbish and recycling from households in County Durham on alternate weeks. One week we empty the rubbish bin and the following week we empty the recycling bin and box. Last financial year (2014/2015) we recycled, reused or composted almost 43 per cent of household waste.
