What we do This booklet aims to provide you with an overview of the key programmes from Durham County Council Sport and Physical Activity Development Team, and to outline some of the services where we work alongside and on behalf of partners, to help local people to start and to stay active. At a local level, we offer a range of support and funding to help voluntary sport and physical activity organisations to develop and grow in strength and capacity; to increase opportunities to participate for all ages and levels. Additionally, we have a number of area based teams who help to create a menu of sport and physical activity opportunities led by the community for the community. We compliment this work by providing a community health programme supported by Specialist Physical Activity Consultants, to inspire and reach those who are not yet active. On a strategic level, we focus upon attracting resources and planning with partners to ensure that there is a high quality choice of activities for all residents across County Durham. Finally, we try to inspire, by supporting a range of fun activity challenges and celebratory events to help engage with non-participants and raise the profile of all that is good about taking part in sport and physical activity.

Our goal is to increase participation in sport and physical activity in County Durham.

Our localities Our work is informed by five Community Sport and Physical Activity Networks. These help us to plan with our partners for an area, attract funding and to encourage joint working. Durham County Council and Leisureworks

(in former Derwentside) have skilled staff based in each locality to deal with local issues and projects, but also to coordinate county wide programmes and opportunities at a community level.

Volunteer Durham Being a volunteer or coach requires commitment and passion, however it can be very rewarding and can help you ‘give something back’ to your community. For you, the individual, it’s a great way of enhancing your employability through gaining new skills and qualifications and can be a good opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and provide an escape from your work or personal routine. Our scheme supports a workforce of quality and committed volunteers. Our officers work with National Governing Bodies (NGBs), County Durham Sport and a range of partners to provide a coordinated plan of training opportunities, to help upskill the present volunteer and coaching force, successfully recruit new volunteers and match new recruits with clubs and placement opportunities. Anyone who lives, plays, volunteers or studies in County Durham can benefit from Volunteer Durham support. For further details call us or email sportandleisurevolunteers@durham.gov.uk

Without volunteers community sport wouldn’t happen.

Over 1000 volunteers receive our support.

Sport teaches young people transferable skills such as sportsmanship, fairness, perseverance and a desire to succeed.

WaGs Durham (Women and Girl’s Sport) This is a community based sport and fitness offer aimed at females aged 16 years and over, providing the support for individuals to come along and try something new or different and give them the motivation to keep coming back. We offer high quality affordable sessions at beginners level, as well as ‘come and try’ fun events such as runs, walks and sponsored workouts. There is something on offer for every women and girl, no matter what their fitness levels or where they live in the county.

Only 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10 girls do enough exercise to stay fit, healthy and happy.

Sportsability Durham This is our programme of sport and physical activity for disabled adults, young people and children. Sportsability clubs are multi-activity and adapted to meet individual needs. The main focus is on having fun through sport and individuals are encouraged to play regardless of ability. Structured sports sessions are led by coaches who make sure all participants stay involved and active. We have a number of sessions running throughout the county targeting both children and adults in each locality. Through Club Durham we are also working with our local clubs to make them inclusive and accessible for participants looking for a structured pathway.

Wellness on Wheels and community well-being hubs Wellness on Wheels (WOW) is an award winning mobile fitness and lifestyle resource, providing free physical activity to residents. WOW visits targeted areas for 8-10 weeks providing opportunities to people who may not have otherwise taken part due to barriers such as confidence, cost and distance. Whilst the WOW Truck visits, the Community Action Team work with the local community to inspire and encourage a legacy project to remain, delivered by the community and for the community. This could be a community gym, a walking group or exercise programme and ideally a growing menu of options.

67% of men and 74% of women in County Durham are not meeting the recommended amount of physical activity.

The county now has 16 established ‘well-being hubs’, led and developed by over 300 regular volunteers across our communities. Durham County Council provides the support and advice for this sustainable model, but we believe the models’ success is based on the energy and investment made by communities themselves. If you want to find your nearest well-being hub, or have an idea please contact us.

Walking, running and cycling These are great activities to help you get started and the county boasts a number of walking, cycling and jogging routes as well as a range of supervised and volunteer led activities. These link to other options such as the countryside’s extensive walking and cycling opportunities which explore our beautiful county. Where possible we aim to develop supported programmes from a well-being hub or nearby park, so there is a social meeting place. We do not always directly deliver these activities, but we may act as funders or coordinators with organisations such as Public Health, England Athletics, Leisureworks and the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust.

These are the simplest and one of the most effective exercises you can do.

We aim to develop a county-wide map of independent routes and supervised opportunities in all these modes of exercise. For an up-to-date list of opportunities please contact us.

Inspiring Partnerships

To increase levels of participation in sport and physical activity it is vital that key agencies work together to develop and promote opportunities for lifelong participation. As a local authority service we play a key role in supporting this approach. We do this at a county-wide level and a locality level as detailed.

Community Sport and Physical Activity Networks The county has five sport and physical activity networks led and coordinated by Durham County Council and Leisureworks. The networks support a partnership approach to programming, resources, marketing and attracting funding. They also support data exchange, sharing and learning, to address shortfalls in opportunities. The networks bring together knowledge, enthusiasm and resource and have emerging area action plans for sport and physical activity which will help partners with future planning and to ensure that we meet local needs. If you want to find out more about the networks and their plans please contact us.

Sport and Physical Activity Awards There is some exceptional work happening in our communities and these awards seek to recognise the talent and commitment of individuals, coaches, volunteers, clubs and schools for their contribution to sport and physical activity over the past year. Durham County Council supports four locality based events with the fifth supported by Leisureworks. Following these events all local award winners are entered into the next stage to compete against all the winners across the county, within their category, at the prestigious County Awards event coordinated by County Durham Sport. The county award system is a great way to celebrate achievements or thank someone who works hard. If you wish to nominate a ‘star’ then please contact us for more information.

Big Challenge events These are London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic inspired multi-partner challenges, from rowing and walking to stepping and swimming. The challenges run alongside Check 4 Life events to encourage both active and non-active participants to challenge their abilities or try something new. In addition, we operate a series of trail races for beginners and are growing range of fun recreational events to encourage people to enjoy outdoor sport and physical activity. For more information please contact us.
