It is the instant when the thread of knowledge comes full circle and your student has a light bulb moment. The moment when the final pieces of the puzzle fall into place and the information all makes sense to him/her. Ten years as a learning coach and I never get tired of experiencing this moment with my son and other students as they work through lessons. The K12 curriculum is chocked full of opportunities for children to experience light bulb moments through a blend of online and offline work. Within this rigorous curriculum Art meets History, History meets Literature, Literature meets Music, Music meets Math, and Math meets Science – the thread of knowledge that connects these courses leads children on a journey to higher level critical thinking which results in exponential academic growth. This cross-curricula content encourages learning leaps, through exploration and discovery, in children of all ages. How do you know when this light bulb moment has occurred? Most often your student will stop in the middle of their lesson and quiz you about 4

the topic, relate the topic to previous lessons throughout the curriculum or just outright share their new discovery with excitement. Their new found skills of deduction and reasoning about how the lesson topic in art is related to history, math and science surprises many children because the connection are not as apparent in the traditional school setting because it is not presented concurrently as with the K12 lessons. The lessons are created in a way to encourage discovery as a part of learning. As a learning coach I have seen passive readers transformed into active readers, not only in literature, but across all subjects. Students who were once passive recipients of material/data, who were unable to grasps the concepts presented, become active participants who achieve academic growth. You will discover that your struggling math student can finally untie the Gordian Knot (an extremely difficult problem) that has confused them and delayed their progress in learning more com-

Anita Walls plicated math can been resolved. How can the curriculum accomplish this feat? Because the math lessons are chopped into information chunks that build onto each other, these chunks are then presented together in a new way through online videos, practice problems, games, textbook problems and review assessments. All these components work together to ensure each course topic is understood by children of varied learning styles. Through the K12 courses, your blossoming artist can discover that art and science are connected as they learn about scientist whose scientific sketches are considered works of art, think John Audubon or Leonardo de Vinci. Learning in this way inspires students to stretch beyond the bounds of just learning facts, but encourages them to pursue their own passions. Passions that are inspired by their own research and discoveries lead to more teachable moments because a singular interest, such as foreign currency, can lead to a tie in with history, math, science, literature and art. One coin can lead to research on when and where the currency was minted (history), the exchange rate of the coin (math), metals used and temperature required to melt the metals (science), the reference to coins in stories can encourage reading materials that were not previously considered and the skills and techniques used to create some coins and bills classifies them as works of art. Curiosity, exploration and discovery are the most basic foundation of learning because they create opportunities that allow learning coaches to

build on the lessons provided in the curriculum. Learning becomes something wonderful; it becomes more fun and exciting to learn because it has link to the real world. So what is a learning coach? What do I do? A learning coach is the parent or any adult who provides support to a student participating in the online school environment. But what does the life of a leaning coach look like? The life of an online school learning coach can include many tasks like managing your child’s daily routine by scheduling lessons, monitoring attendance during online instructional sessons, checking in with teachers, participating in parent-teacher conferences and monitoring the completion of all assignments. When I started as a learning coach for my children 10 years ago, coordinating and planning the work was my primary focus, but as the years passed it became so much more as learning became an integral part of our days together. The skills I learned as a coach helped me to not only facilitate (make easier) and assist my online students with their work, but helped them transition from dependent elementary school age students to independent middle and high school learners. I have shared a portion of my journey with you that I would like to see all students experience. In this partnership through online education, everyone benefits and grows because student achievement is front and center and as a learning coach you make the difference. ★★★ Visit us online at DCCharterSchoolsMag.com |

SUMMER CHARTERED

Success

While schools are cutting recess and arts programming, a generation of parents have found a way to stimulate their children throughout summer recess. Discovering the synergy between the brain and the body is top priority as they look to expand their child’s capacity to learn from late June to August. As a mother of 3 and the owner of a dance institute who has taught over 1,000 youth in the nation’s capital, I have a combination of experience and intuition on how to select the right summer program for young people. My philosophy is rooted in creating diverse experiences while developing cognitive and motor skills. I follow 3 simple criteria:

8

| DC Charter Schools Magazine – Spring/Summer 2016

1)

Will the child continue to learn?

2)

Will the staff “wear my kid out” with rigorous physical activities?

3)

Is the environment stimulating and nurturing to their emotional well-being?

CREATING SYNERGY BETWEEN

THE BRAIN & THE BODY This formula has never failed me, or the hundreds of parents I interact with every summer. Of course there are other factors like location and fees. However, many will drive the extra mile and make the financial sacrifice when it comes to enriching the lives of their children. For 8 weeks, youth have the opportunity to explore their interests beyond the classroom. It is a break from sitting at desks the majority of the day and allows them to express themselves freely, learn new skills, and have fun! As a dance educator, movement of any kind, is highly recommended. For kids whom do not consider themselves ‘sporty,’ dance is the perfect physical activity. Every year I offer a 5 week Summer Dance Institute and a Summer Saturday Series. Students of all backgrounds and technical levels join me to go on a journey where they explore Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Modern, Contemporary, Hip-Hop, and African dance. We culminate our week with an enrichment field trip and an in-studio performance to demonstrate what they have learned. Not only is this approach fun, exhilarating, and intense – it also challenges us to maximize the potential of each student in a short period of time. There are many studies that examine the benefits of dance, but I am always delighted to observe and hear testimonials about how our students have experienced the following during our summer programs: •

Improved body awareness, posture, strength, and flexibility.

Developed confidence and built social skills.

Increased self-esteem and the ability to communicate with a group.

Learned about other cultures and diverse traditions.

Discovered the importance of nutrition.

Experienced a range of dance techniques.

Engaged in a rigorous program that helped them to access their innate talents.

In just a few short weeks we will all be shifting our schedules, taking different routes to drop the kids, and meeting new smiling faces whom we will entrust our most prized possessions with for 8 hours a day. I invite to visit the Princess Mhoon Dance Institute for one of our summer programs. It is sure to be a summer CHARTERED for physical, mental, and emotional success. Let’s Dance! Kids and Culture Camp Graduates

Prepared to Take On the World By Monica Z. Utsey

In his book, the Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell wrote that high performing and low performing schools record the same or very similar levels of improvement over the course of a school year. Whether it’s a private school, charter school or public school – over the course of a year, test scores are better at the end of the year for most students. But many students of color lose ground over the summer if families are not able to provide engaging, enlightening summer experiences that include reading,

travel, and high yield educational options. For the past 6 years, Kids and Culture Camp has provided that and much more. Young people who started attending when they were 6, 7 or even 8 years old are now teenagers (and have aged out of the program) with a much richer perspective on the world. Ahmad Dove, a 14 year-old middle school student, says that his Kids and Culture Camp experience made him even more interested in the Model UN program. Students Continued on page 16

learn how the UN works and participate in simulations of international issues and current events. “This year, I am going to be the Ambassador of Cuba. Last year, we were Ambassadors of Japan,” said Dove. “Attending Kids and Culture Camp helped me have more interest in programs like the Model UN and want to help solve problems of the world.” Kids and Culture Camp started as a cooperative endeavor by moms who wanted to ensure that their children had fun during the summer and learned about the world. They got the recipe just right according to 15 year-old Aking Moses, who started Kids and Culture Camp when he was 9 years old. “What I liked most was learning, but it wasn’t exactly like school,” said Moses. “It was more relaxed learning, arts and crafts projects, presentations, watching documentaries and doing fun stuff centered around the topics. I liked the decorations from the cultures and the energy of the teachers.” Zahir Muhammad, a 13 year-old Kids and Culture Camp graduate agrees. “I liked the variety of activities and even though it was a central topic, I liked that it was expressed in different ways,” said Muhammad. “One thing that really stuck out to me was when I was about 7 years old and we had a competition to see who could memorize the most countries in Central America. I am very competitive and I went home and memorized all the countries. It was a fun competition in a healthy way!” Kids and Culture Camp has 8 educational themes through which the curriculum is interwoven: visual and performing arts; science, math and technology; social history and geography; language arts and culture; experiential learning and social skill development; and, mental, emotional and physical health. The summer deficit that Gladwell writes about in Outliers is compensated for during 4 weeks at Kids and Culture Camp. One consistent favorite among Kids and Culture Camp graduates was learning about different cultures through the cooking classes and sports. Dray Burnett, age 13, says he looked forward to trying new foods like beef pat16

ties and jerk chicken when he studied Jamaica. Yeshayah Ben-Tsalmiel, age 16, loved learning about martial arts and sports played around the world such as capoeira and soccer. “Brazil was probably my favorite because of the food, language, culture, and how they live.” These graduates have a deeper understanding of their experiences now that they are older. “There are things that are happening outside of our country that affect our country,” Burnett wisely reasoned. “It is good to be wellrounded.” Erica Reynolds, age 12, went on to say that “You can learn what different people think and how differently they think from you.” Her twin brother Nigel believes his Kids and Culture Camp experiences informed him. “I can add to a conversation now. I can share with more people about different countries,” he said. “When you study cultures, you discover they have unique traditions.” Kadmiel Ben-Tsalmiel, age 14, remembers an important discovery when Kids and Culture Camp studied the Mayan Aztec people. “I learned that there were pyramids not only in Africa, but also South America.” The Kids and Culture Camp experience has left lasting impressions upon these graduates who talk about the world as if they have traveled it. In a sense, they have. One of the most memorable experiences for 12-year-old Adoniyah Ben-Tsalmiel was visiting the Embassy of Thailand during a field trip. He’s not sure what kind of career he wants, but he knows it must include traveling the world and meeting people of different cultures. “I think it is important because you get knowledge of other cultures, their systems, and how they interact with their people and you can use it to strengthen your own,” said Ben-Tsalmiel. Spoken like a true ambassador. Kids and Culture Camp’s summer focus for 2016 will be Melanesia, Argentina, Zimbabwe, and Cuba for children aged 3-12. Kids Elite Sports Camp was founded by Desmond Dunham, a native of Gary, IN with over 20 years of professional and collegiate experience. After falling in love with the city, its people, and its culture, he and his wife and family of two made Washington, DC his home. Commonly referred to as Coach Dunham, his career began as a state champion in high school, then as a collegiate athlete of Howard University, next as a teacher and coach, ultimately becoming one of the foremost coaches 18

in the nation. After matriculating from Howard University with a Master’s of Science in Exercise Physiology, he founded The DC Redwings Youth Program, Inc., training youth runners, many of whom went on to break numerous youth track and field records over an eight year period. During his tenure with the Redwings, Inc., Dunham served as an athletic director at Paul PCS for seven years and coached numerous sports teams including soccer, basketball, and flag football. In addition, he was recognized as a 3-Time Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year. Following Paul, Coach Dunham consequently led his Roosevelt High School boys and girls track teams in Greenbelt, MD to win state championships and notably back to back Penn Relay Championships. With a brief four (4) year stint as the assistant track and head cross country coach at NCAA Division I program, University of Maryland, he returned to coaching high school in 2012, landing at Wilson Senior High School in Washington, DC. Wilson has now become the top running program in the district. Several student-athletes have garnered collegiate scholarships but more importantly, many more learned valuable life lessons through the sport of running. Why Kids Elite Sports Camp? The dedication, experience, and commitment needed to develop the youth athletes of today is a unique and challenging process that must be navigated by someone whom possesses both wisdom and character. Coach Dunham’s knowledge of recreational and competitive athletics is without comparison. If you are wondering about his character, you don’t have to look far to find someone whose life was positively impacted! The answer is simple, but the choice is yours! If you would like more information visit us at www.kidselitesports.org or call us at (240)321-9287. National Collegiate Preparatory

A Great Place To Call Home We at National Prep have a great story to tell and we would love to share it with the public! National Collegiate Preparatory Public Charter School (National Prep) educates youth in grades 9th-12th throughout Washington D.C. We are the first and only International Baccalaureate High School in Ward 8. We serve students who are interested in graduating from high school and are excited about attending college. We have assisted students from different backgrounds to attain a great high school education and college acceptance. Thus far our two graduating classes have received over two million dollars in scholarships and grants. Let us help you! Here are a few accomplishments and special programs of which we are most proud: 100% High School Graduation Rate 100% College Acceptance Rate Two students awarded the prestigious POSSE Scholarship two years in a row 26

| DC Charter Schools Magazine – Spring/Summer 2016

STEAM – A plethora of opportunities for students to thrive in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering Arts and Music. Special attention given to the needs of our youth at National Prep: from the beginning of our school year in the summer, to our ‘jump-start’ program which extends the length of the school day, and allows for more instructional time. Opportunities for all students to travel abroad internationally and learn about other cultures and customs while attending National Prep. One of the only DC Public Charter schools offering the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma (Of note, IB is predominantly found at private schools and in high socioeconomic communities.) Rigorous athletic program to include: • Contact Football • Basketball • Baseball

• Volleyball • Cheerleading • Dance • Softball • Track and Field

The Rites of Passage Empowering Students (ROPES) program provides an opportunity for students to become socially prepared in any formal or business setting they may encounter in life. The Sankofa Ball is our culminating formal event to present and honor our seniors. We are looking for high school students that are excited to have a great high school experience and are looking for a wonderful home for their high school career.

All National Prep teachers are highly qualified. 90% of our faculty has a master’s degree, International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement trained. ★★★ Visit us online at DCCharterSchoolsMag.com |
