We sat down and had a chat with Dr. Eijah Holness in her outstanding office designed by DC Dental. The following is the conversation with Dr. Holness: DC Dental: What motivated you to go into dentistry?

DC Dental: What has been the most challenging?

Dr. Holness: I always knew that I was going to be a doctor of some sort. I guess when I had braces as a teenager, I started to really look at dentistry as a field and I liked what I saw. I saw that there was a need for African American dentists in particular. I love that there is such flexibility within the field; you can do so many things from education to public health to private practice to corporate. There are options and I don’t feel like I should ever be locked into one thing, so I like that about it.

Dr. Holness: The most challenging has been associating. It was very challenging for me and that is what led me to want to open my own practice. It also taught me a lot, so I’m really glad for all of the perspectives that I was able to gain from my different experiences associating throughout Maryland and D.C.

DC Dental: To date, what has been your proudest moment in your dental career? Dr. Holness: I would say opening this practice. That is pretty much the proudest moment.

Hometown:

DC Dental: How do you make your patients feel less anxious and more comfortable during their visit? Dr. Holness: First of all, we are here to cater to people who are anxious and that is a lot of people whether they admit it or not. We try to create a relaxing atmosphere with music and television and we offer different options for the patient’s comfort such as the wand and dental vibe. We let them know that we are listening, if you tell us that something is uncomfortable then we will listen.

DC Dental: Where do you see the future of dentistry headed?

DC Dental: What might someone be surprised to know about you?

Dr. Holness: I hope that with more opportunities for patients to educate themselves at home with YouTube and looking things up that it will lead to more dentists needing or exceeding a standard of care as well as running patient centered practices and not self centered practices. I don’t know that that’s what it has been in the past, but I think now more than ever as patients become more aware I hope that dentists are able to rise to the level of their expectations and that they would be motivated to improve themselves, their practices and services that they offer. That is what I hope for. Obviously we are becoming more of a technologically advanced society and I like the fact that dentistry is incorporating such technology now.

Dr. Holness: I am a leukemia survivor, not everyone knows that.

DC Dental: How do you use your skills to volunteer or give back to the community? Dr. Holness: I am very active in my church. I went on a mission last summer to Guatemala where we extracted a lot of teeth and I hope to continue that. Also, I hope to do more in the community as far as health fairs and such. DC Dental: What advice would you give to someone opening up a practice today? Dr. Holness: Start doing your research two years ago. Read every resource, talk to every person, surf every website that you can so that you know what is out there because you are not going to learn it in school. Dental Town has been my greatest resource and of course other people.

DC Dental: How did you hear about DC Dental? Dr. Holness: I was at the Greater New York Dental Meeting a couple of years ago and that is when I first met Eddie. At the same time, I ran into a colleague and he was familiar with the company and recommended DC Dental. The office he was practicing with utilized DC Dental. Eddie was waiting for me with open arms! DC Dental: How did DC Dental differentiate itself from the competition? Dr. Holness: I didn’t pay much attention to the competition quite honestly. I like the smaller feel of the company and the fact that it is near. The other companies are nationwide and DC Dental is growing and I like the fact that it is right in my backyard. DC Dental: Would you recommend DC Dental to your colleagues? Dr. Holness: Sure I would! I like the personalized attention that I have received from Eddie, Tracy and everyone else that I have worked with. I like that the accessibility as well as the product offerings. I am very satisfied with DC Dental!
