We sat down to chat with Dr. Oliver in her newly completed Georgetown practice. The following are excerpts from that conversation.

DC Dental: Who influenced you to go into dentistry?

Dr. Oliver: My orthodontist, David Judy. In high school I had braces. I sucked my thumb for a long time - I’m kind of embarrassed to tell you - until about 12-13 when it started looking inappropriate. I had done a lot of damage to my mouth and I needed, in addition to braces, an expander. It took a lot to get my teeth to look the way they look now. So when Dr. Judy finished, it just felt magical. The impact that it had on my self esteem… I knew then, I wanted to go into something dental-healthcare related.

DC Dental: What made you choose Georgetown for your office location?

Dr. Oliver: When I was in residency at Howard, I loved the District. It was such a culturally diverse area. The Midwest is good - you have a very simple upbringing and you don’t see a lot of the stuff that I feel the kids here are exposed to at a young age. But as far as being a young professional, I like it here better. As far as Georgetown, it was very important to find a location that could support the population that I’m serving, that was not on top of another orthodontist. This community has a lot of houses, a lot of schools, public libraries and surprisingly there was not an orthodontist in this community. Also, my patients typically are younger, so I wanted to find a location where parents could feel comfortable driving and finding parking.

DC Dental: Did Eddie Ash (DC Dental Design and Equipment Specialist) help you deal with the demographics there?

Dr. Oliver: It’s funny, a friend of mine was looking to start up an ortho practice, and she actually found this place first. She later decided she didn’t want to move forward just yet with starting up. So we talked to Eddie and the team about the space and they looked into the area and demographics. We visited the site together many times. They were very helpful in terms of just researching this location and seeing if it was a good deal.

DC Dental: The prospect of orthodontia could be very daunting and scary to patients; what do you do to put them at ease?

Dr. Oliver: I use honesty. I tell them, it may be okay now but later tonight, it’s not going to feel too comfortable. It also helps when the patient knows you’ve been through the process yourself they have more faith and trust that you are telling them the truth.

DC Dental: What do you find is a common misperception about Orthodontics?

Dr. Oliver: That it’s for children. So many adults are getting orthodontics. No longer do you have to have metal braces, we have clear braces, and we even have braces that we put behind the teeth called lingual braces. My oldest patient in residency was 77! She had a boyfriend so she wanted to have her smile corrected.

DC Dental: Where do you see Orthodontics in 5 years?

DC Dental: What was your first impression of DC Dental?

DC Dental: If you were not doing Dentistry, what would you be doing?

Dr. Oliver: If you want to compete you need to have a high-tech office – digital x-rays, the MyRay Pan/Ceph, for example. By then, we’ll be using digital scanners for taking almost all impressions.

It’s just going to be more technologically advanced in every way - from the clinical to the admin.

Dr. Oliver: Very professional. I compare it to… I like going to Home Depot, but it’s nice when you can find a neighborhood mom and pop type hardware store where they know your name. So it was more personal, less commercial.

Dr. Oliver: I would be a dancer. I didn’t study dance, I studied biology, but prior to going to college I did dance and cheer in gymnastics, so I love performance. I love the Alvin Ailey dance company. If I had no student loans, or any responsibilities, I’d travel the world and dance.

DC Dental: What has been your proudest moment in your dental career?

Dr. Oliver: Opening up my own practice.

DC Dental: What has been your most challenging moment?

Dr. Oliver: Goodness, getting to this point has been a crazy struggle. But like I said Eddie and the DC team have been very helpful. Very instrumental in getting things going. In the beginning there were a lot of hurdles that weren’t typical but they put out a lot of fires for me to be able to get here.

DC Dental: So would you recommend DC Dental to your colleagues?

Dr. Oliver: I already have! I recommend it to all of my friends because especially as a female where you’re young and you’re new, it’s very daunting. Business is business, I get it. But it’s uncomfortable when you feel like you can’t trust people because you know, that they know, that you’re new. I know dentistry but I don’t know everything about the business. But I feel like with Eddie and the team, they truly made me feel comfortable. At times he would tell me, “Well you really don’t need this, I wouldn’t spend the money on that. You know if you really want to invest in this, it might be a good idea, here’s why.” I trust them.
