here is a saying, alternately attributed to Buddha Siddhartha Guatama Shakyamuni and the Theosophists, that goes: When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. Regardless of who came up with it, I believe this to be true. No matter how hard you study, or how much knowledge you acquire, or how much wisdom you possess â&#x20AC;&#x201C; there is always more to learn. I love to learn new things. That is not to say that I did not suffer from PTDSD - post traumatic dental school disorder. I still have nightmares. But, CE is different for so many reasons. Here are just a few.

1. It is non judgemental. No one is grading me. There is no

homework to hand in. I can choose what I want to learn, and forget the rest.

2. It challenges the status quo. It prevents me from becoming

complacent in my philosophy. Even if I do not agree with what is being said, it makes me think.

3. It motivates me. Nothing cures temporary burn-out more

than giving my hands a rest and stimulating my mind. If I need an infusion of energy, there is no better way to recharge my batteries.

4. It makes me a better teacher. Effective teachers are facilitators who make their impact by understanding the needs of the learner. As a perpetual learner, I can anticipate the challenges from both points of view. 5. It reminds me to search for excellence and not perfection.

7. I can do it at my own speed. When we were younger, school

was our job. Now we juggle work, family and households with all of the subcategories these produce. There are so many vehicles for dental CE that I can always find the time. I look forward to my courses even if they are in the form of an article that I read after everyone else is asleep and the house is quiet.

8. It exposes me to what is possible. CE opens up ideas that I

have never considered before. There are no truer words than, “you don’t know what you don’t know”.

I find that I can learn something from everyone. Last week my friend and colleague, Dr. Kate Gross presented: “Tame the Beast” Dentistry’s Greatest Stressors: Kids and High Fear Patients. For the most part, I do not treat kids. As an endodontist, I have plenty of experience with high fear patients. I was not sure I would be able to apply the information that she presented. But, Kate is exceptional and puts her heart into everything she does. I tuned in with an open mind. Her presentation was chock full of practical information on her chosen topic, but also about practicing dentistry in general, building a successful practice, the rewards of giving your time for charitable ventures and creating equilibrium in your life. I was so motivated by her words that I made a commitment to myself to make some long overdue positive changes

I can be my own worst enemy when it comes to critiquing my work. CE courses remind me that dentistry is not an exact science. I am using man made materials. There are limitations beyond my control.

6. It gives me more confidence. When something finally

One of my favorite vehicles for getting my CE fix is tuning in to webinars. Where else can you attend a seminar in your pajamas? They usually are structured as short, self-contained lectures. We sat down and had a chat with Dr. Dede Orraca-Tetteh in her exceptionally well-designed office with equipment help from DC Dental. The following is the conversation with Dr. Orraca-Tetteh: DC Dental: What or who inspired you to go into dentistry?

DC Dental: What has been your most challenging moment?

Dr. Orraca-Tetteh: I was working prior to dental school and we were doing head neck cancer research and one of the doctors that we were working with was a dentist since we were doing head and neck evaluations. He seemed really happy, so I talked to him about his day and he said he always liked working with his hands and being creative. He wanted to own his own business and set his own hours. It made sense to me, so I shadowed him and my own dentist and that is when I figured out that is what I wanted to do.

Dr. Orraca-Tetteh: Opening this office! I think because you are the owner you have to deal with everything and I’m training my staff, but I have to train them on everything that I know and I still need to learn things myself. So, I have to train myself so that I can train my staff. Between balancing that and home life is difficult with my two small children and my husband. Having that work life balance can be difficult because I have to build my business but I’m also a mother and I have to be there for my kids, so I always feel like I’m being pulled at two ends, so finding that balance is always challenging.

DC Dental: How do you make your patients feel less anxious and more comfortable during their visit? Dr. Orraca-Tetteh: The whole point in the design of my office is to make patients feel more comfortable with all of the amenities we have such as the televisions and music along with myself. I’m not judgemental. I speak in a very calm, soft voice and nothing really surprises me so I try to be patient and explain to them everything I’m doing. DC Dental: What is your proudest moment? Dr. Orraca-Tetteh: Opening this office, this is it. I thought graduating was my proudest moment, but this is it. From beginning to end was very difficult. Getting a loan was difficult, getting the space was difficult. Every single step I have been dealt with some sort of adversity and I’ve had to overcome it and because of all of that I am just so proud of myself and my family and everyone around me.

What is your favorite procedure to assist with? Root canals. It is more involved and interesting to me. Patients have different canal lengths, some of the canals are crazy looking, so it is neat to see. You have to make sure you get the precise measurement with root canals so there is a lot of work involved. What made you want to become a dental assistant? I always liked the medical field. I thought about being a nurse but I had two young kids at the time. I wanted to go back to school, so I got some pre-requisites done and it would have been 4 years to be a

DC Dental: What do you find is a misperception about dentistry? Dr. Orraca-Tetteh: That when you see a dentist you are expected to be in some sort of pain or discomfort. But, usually people come to us in pain and discomfort and we try to get you out of that. Also, that dentists are very dry and boring people, but I don’t think so at all! DC Dental: Where do you see dentistry in 5 years? Dr. Orraca-Tetteh: Paperless. We are paperless already but moving away from papers and being more connected with your patients through social media. We have been able to actually get patients through social media on Facebook, Twitter and even LinkedIn. Also, trying to keep things in house. General dentists are learning how to do orthodontics and implants, so if we offer those services the patients don’t have to go out of our office.

nurse and I just didn’t have the time. I thought I would go into dental assisting because it was a one year program and I would still be working with patients. I know a lot of people have fear in dentistry and I like to put them at ease How do you make patients feel comfortable during their visit? I reassure them that we are here for them. I know that people are anxious about going to the dentist because I have been there myself. They shouldn’t feel ashamed or bad about it because it is a normal reaction. I tell them that we will explain everything and you don’t have to worry about anything. I answer their questions

and they can even hold my hand if they need to. Describe your day in one word. Busy What is your favorite dental story? I was working with a dentist and her English wasn’t very well and she said “I need you to get me the vase line and bun warmer.” I didn’t want to ask what those items were so I just went to the supply room to grab them. I went back to the supplies room and everyone is watching me search and then they asked if I was working with doctor so and so. I told them yes and they said “It’s vaseline and a bunsen burner.”

DC Dental: If you could, what advice would you give to yourself upon graduating dental school? Dr. Orraca-Tetteh: Probably to get more behind the scenes of my bosses. I was there to really just do the work and it wasn’t until I opened my own practice that I went to them to find out what it’s like to own your own business. I would have talked to them more and see what it was like as far as supplies and overhead. DC Dental: How do you use your skills to give back and volunteer? Dr. Orraca-Tetteh: We just went to a preschool today and did an in service dental visit. We did a story book and explained how important it is to brush your teeth. I like going into communities with children and doing in service dental visits about how important it is to see a dentist. DC Dental: What might someone be surprised to know about you?
