Beautiful, imaginitive, weddings. Every time.

DELANI + ALEX

CATHERINE + CAIN

Delani and Alex tied the knot with a black and white affair at The Carlisle Room on October 30th. Guests were greeted into the reception with a glass of bubbly and their escort card found on the champagne wall. After the wedding formalities, they partied the night away and sent the newly-weds off with a bubble-gun exit.

Catherine and Cain exchanged their vows on December 4th at Hillside Estate. Their wedding was adorned with yuletide elegance from the invitation suite to the reception. Catherine was escorted down the aisle by her father, who then had the honor of marrying his little girl to the love of her life.

It’s All About You Allow me to elaborate on what may be a (slightly) misleading headline. I don’t mean to imply that on your big day, all the attention should be on you and you alone—even though, let’s face it, it kind of should. What I mean is that your wedding day should be representative of who you and your fiancé are as individuals, and as a couple. It shouldn’t be a representation of the proverbial Joneses, or your friends, or even your parents—every detail should be unique to your tastes, your interests, and your likes and dislikes. When I was planning my wedding 17 years ago, I knew I didn’t want my loved ones staring at me from uncomfortable rows. I don’t love the spotlight, and I much preferred to have my guests seated at tables with bottles of wine, so they could celebrate right along with us as we said our vows. My vendors were hesitant; it wasn’t “what most people do.” But I stuck to my guns and got the wedding that felt like me. I’ve never regretted it. So I encourage brides and grooms: Don’t be afraid to be diffe ent. Make your day as unique as you are. Maybe you love periwinkle blue and want no other shade visible in your reception decor. Perhaps you want to plan a dinner menu that reflects your heritage. Or maybe you really love to throw strikes and decide to host your “I do’s” in a

bowling alley. (I haven’t seen that one yet, but I kind of love the idea.) The couples in this issue took this to heart. We saw people eschewing modern “must-haves” like a tiered wedding cake in favor of individual desserts (like Sarah and Michael, pg. 76). We saw a couple who dared to arrange their guests’ ceremony chairs “in the round”—a first for the venue (Catherine and Jack, pg. 48). We saw a couple whose love of reading inspired a literary lovefest (Allie and James, pg. 66). And then we saw some couples who went next-level, going so far as to theme their entire events around a single concept. In the wrong hands, a theme wedding could go sideways; but you’ll see how these couples pulled it off in elegant and memorable ways. We’ve long made it our mission at D Weddings to discourage brides and grooms from striving for “perfection”—be it in terms of unhealthy body image or in holding their wedding day to impossible standards. Instead, we empower couples to plan the weddings that are right for them—whatever that may be. I’m not sure we’ve ever had a group of celebrations that better embodied that mindset. I mean, it’s not every issue where we have not one but two weddings with nods to Harry Potter. In my book, that means we’re doing something right.

Happy planning,

Dre s s e d to Im p re s s When Patrick Campbell was ready to ask Emily Barge to marry him, he knew just the place to create a beautiful memory: Bee Street Gallery, the art gallery owned by his mom and sister. Under the guise of attending a show, Emily arrived at the venue to find not just displayed works but flowers, candles, and her boyfriend down on one knee. Their artful “I will” preceded a stylish “I do,” with Emily dazzling in a series of chic ensembles over the course of their November 2021 wedding weekend. Of this Markarian dress, which she wore to their rehearsal dinner at the Dallas Arboretum’s DeGolyer House, Emily says, “It felt so sweet and elegant.” As for her bow-accented Jimmy Choo shoes, she says, “I am still so in love with them to this day.” —Jessica Otte P H O T O G R A P H Y: John Cain Photography

“I hope I look back at my wedding and view it as timeless with a clean, modern twist to it,” says Emily Barge of her November 20, 2021, “I do’s” to Patrick Campbell. She accomplished exactly that through her various wedding ensembles, choosing timeless materials (pearls at every turn!) but in updated applications.

RECEPTION The look: Watters Designs dress When it came to choosing her party frock, Makenna allowed herself to have “a little more fun.” She paired the bow-accented mini dress with sparkly Loeffler Randall heels and Rebecca de Ravenel hoops to make the look especially festive.

CEREMONY The look: Vera Wang gown “As soon as we entered the salon, I walked right up and said, ‘This one,’ ” Makenna remembers of her trip to The Bridal Salon at Neiman Marcus. “I still think it’s the perfect winter wedding dress.”

CEREMONY & RECEPTION The Look: Carolina Herrera gown “I knew immediately when I put it on that it was the one,” Emily remembers of the silk mikado gown with oversized bow detail on the back, purchased at The Bridal Salon at Neiman Marcus. She paired it with Jennifer Behr pearl earrings and Jimmy Choo pearl heels.

Bridal Style Muse: Emma Rosenberg

SANGEET The Look: Custom Zoe Rosenberg dress For the weekend’s welcome party, Emma’s sister, Zoe—an L.A. fashion designer—created this double-faced satin dress that featured hand-beaded symbols representing the couple’s home states, favorite band, and more. “I was absolutely in love with it,” Emma remembers.

For Emma Rosenberg’s IndianAmerican-fusion nuptials to Promit Chatterjee on October 9, 2021, her goal was to blend tradition and individuality, honoring her personal style as well as the culture and customs of the man she was marrying. Emma carefully curated looks for all her wedding events, Hindu and Western alike, that made her feel magical and celebrated.

GETTING READY The Look: Sleeper pajamas Wanting a “unified” look, Savanna chose white PJs for her and her ’maids. The bride donned a featheraccented set by Sleeper, purchased at Neiman Marcus, while her bridal party wore sets found on Etsy.

ANNE BARGE

Bridal Style Muse: Savanna Jones The lace gown Savanna Jones wore for her wedding ceremony to Connor Beck wasn’t what she imagined herself in; it was better. The bride kept an open mind while curating looks for her January 29, 2022, “I do’s” —a flexibility that paid off.

AFTER PARTY The Look: Nardos Design dress Once Savanna found her two-in-one ceremony gown, she intended to forgo a separate after-party dress. But when she espied this crystalbeaded number by Nardos Design, she couldn’t help herself. “It was honestly love at first sight,” says Savanna. RECEPTION The Look: Chitraa Singh lehenga Designed by Shalini Jindal, a family friend and owner of Reflections Fashions in Plano, Emma’s bridal lehenga was made of georgette and pure silk, hand-embellished with gold thread, glass beads, pearls, and Swarovski crystals. Though Western brides are accustomed to wearing white, the choice of hue was unique for a traditional Indian wedding garment. “I wanted something unusual that made a statement,” Emma reminisces.

WESTERN CEREMONY The Look: Allison Webb gown Trying on only five dresses, Emma was immediately drawn to the detachable pearl overlay and oversized bow details of this Allison Webb gown, purchased at StarDust Celebrations. “I wanted something simplistic and romantic,” says the bride. “Timeless and traditional, rather than trendy.”

CEREMONY & RECEPTION The Look: Monique Lhuillier gown There were two things Savanna told her Neiman Marcus bridal attendant she didn’t want in a wedding dress: lace and a strapless neckline—yet that’s exactly what she ended up falling in love with. “It was regal, unexpected, and sophisticated,” says Savanna. The long sleeves were part of an detachable jacket, which she removed for the reception— and plans to re-wear on special occasions with her husband.

But for those who hail from out of town or aren’t tied to any particular faith organization, it can be tricky to find someone who brings the right sense of gravitas while still making a ceremony feel personal. So how do you find the right man or woman for the job? Marty Younkin, pictured at left, says the key is finding someone who loves love. “I was a singles pastor for quite a few years, and when I left the church, my wife asked me what I had enjoyed about it,” he remembers. “And I said, ‘Watching people fall in love and get married.’ ” For more than 30 years since then, Younkin and his wife, Carol, haveoffe ed music and officiant services to North Texas brides and grooms through their company, LoveNotes. Since the company’s founding in 1990, it has performed more than 16,000 weddings and staffs 21 ordained, licensed, and seminary-trained ministers from all diffe ent Christian denominations (though the organization also performs non-religious ceremonies). The reason for their success, Younkin says, is simple: “We love what we do, and I think it shows.” Weasked Younkin what couples should look for in an officiant, how to keep their cool on the big day, and his advice for a happily ever after.

Younkin cites the three E’s—experience, expertise, and education—as the backbone of his business. But above all else, he says, an officiant must be genuine. “We go through the training process to get [our officiants] prepared for any and all situations, but the love and care you have for people must be real,” he says. You also want someone who takes time to get to know you and your significant other. After meeting with each client in person, Younkin tailors his words to the couple—a detail that hasn’t gone unnoticed by planner

Whitney Bailey of Engaged Events, who has worked with Younkin on at least 20 weddings. “He customizes each script so it’s not a cookie-cutter ceremony,” she says. What does he love most about weddings?

“For me, it’s all about relationships,” Younkin says. To him, the couple are not just clients he’ll only interact with a few times; in some cases, he says, they’ve become lifelong friends. “There’s nothing better than to see people fall in love and want to get married,” he adds.

What should couples keep in mind on their big day?

Younkin says maintaining a sense of humor is crucial to enjoying the day. “Every bride wants her wedding to be perfect, but there will always be something that’s not,” he says. Younkin is known for sprinkling in some humor to the day—with the couple’s goahead—especially when the unexpected happens midceremony, like a fainting groom or a donkey braying in the background (both of which have happened at weddings Younkin has performed). “Humor can help people relax,” he says.

Any favorite moments?

Younkin has presided over a number of memorable weddings, including the union of actors at the Majestic Theatre, where the bride and groom sang their vows; a ceremony in which the groom ziplined down the aisle; a “Beauty and the Beast”–themed wedding with the couple and attendants in costume; and even a Robin Hood– themed wedding set in a forest. But one of the most sentimental moments came when a groom who had been injured in an accident and was recovering in a wheelchair stood to say his vows and sing his bride a song. “It was just a very sweet moment,” he says.

Advice for a lasting marriage?

In a book that Younkin cowrote with his wife entitled 101 Ways to Keep the Love Knot Tied, they include this bit of advice: “To keep your love brimming in the marriage cup, whenever you are wrong, admit it. Whenever you are right, shut up.” It’s a humorous way of saying that communication is key, which is one of the key elements Younkin stresses to his couples. “Love is the commitment; marriage is the covenant,” he says. “Life is all about change. It’s an adventure, so enjoy the journey.”

With a recent uptick in DFW venues featuring dedicated areas that couples and their attendants can spend time in before the ceremony, many of these spaces are taking a new approach geared towards men. What groom wouldn’t want to spend the morning shooting hoops with his pals or playing pool while his bride-to-be gets primped and pampered? Whether it’s a bowling alley or a rooftop terrace bar, grooms and groomsmen alike can allieviate any prewedding jitters by hanging with the bros.

Elegance and timelessness are at the top of most brides’ wedding wishlists, but when it comes to groom’s cakes—a tradition that has taken on a life of its own—all bets are off! We love giving your groom an opportunity to showcase his personality and interests. Here are the stories behind two of our recent faves.

top) For his October 30, 2021 wedding to Corinn Figueroa, groom Jack Luckie—with help from his mother, Cathy— dreamed up this Kentucky mash–inspired cake that was brought to life by Panini Bakery. incorporate a barrel and bottle into the chocolate mousse cake’s design. The four-leaf clovers are a play on the groom’s last name. bottom) For their November 20, 2021, reception, Emily Rogers and Jarmon Hicks wanted a cake to represent the groom’s favorite pastime and

At the reception—designed by Bella Flora and OKC-based Aisle Be With You—the Bella Acento mirrored head table reflects the warm light and further enhances the eff ct. Low floral arrangements and additional candles—both by Bella Flora—provide fullness but don’t overpower.

Catherine Edmonson and Jack Hamilton’s first dance as man and wife was to Frank Sinatra’s 1959 ballad, “All My Tomorrows.” The choice of era was significant, as the bride is convinced they met in a past life some 70 years ago. The appropriately vintage-inspired reception followed an otherworldly ceremony in the Adolphus’ Governor’s Ballroom, which was performed in the round—a first for the space—and lit by nothing but candlelight. Says the bride, “I wanted it to feel like it was just Jack and I in there.” Turn the page to see more of this wedding >>

Marry Go Round: It was planner Jess Wegner’s idea to do the ceremony “in the round,” meaning that the guests and decor were centered around the couple, rather than having one long aisle. “When you walk in, it feels like you’re in this cocoon, or this bubble of love,” Jess says. Additionally, the bride much preferred candlelight to florals inside the ceremony location, which illuminated the space to create an atmospheric glow.

REAL WEDDINGS

Catherine Edmonson and Jack Hamilton met over a game of ping pong at a bar in Washington, D.C. for a friend’s birthday party. But for Catherine, it felt as though they'd known each other much longer. “We hit it off and had this weird, spiritual connection, like when you meet somebody that you’ve met in a past life,” she says. “I just took a deep breath and was like, ‘Good to see you again.’ ” Though she was dating someone else at the time, she gave Jack her number but blocked his out of guilt. Three months later and newly single, Catherine unblocked his number, and the rest is history. After eight months of dating, the couple got engaged in Florida at Jack’s parents’ house, where her own parents were waiting with balloons and flowers in the backyard. “We just vibe with each

<<

other,” she says. “We can sit in a room and be silent and have an entire conversation.” —Sarah Bennett

Feels Like Home: Catherine sent Jess inspiration mood boards, though most of the photos were of interiors rather than weddings. Having such clear direction made it easy to hone in on aesthetic choices, including black velvet tablecloths, geometric napkins, copper flatware, and orchids.

14 Karat: With all the extravagant detail in so many places, Catherine opted for an unadorned cake design. “I just wanted it to be super simple,” she says. “I grew up eating carrot cake, so that’s what we had.”

48

Strokes of Genius: "I really wanted it to be this super dark, Old Hollywood vibe,” the bride says of their reception. “I wanted for our guests to feel like they walked into this warm and comforting place.” Jess enlisted Branching Out Events to execute Catherine's intentional vision for reception florals. “I wanted it to look like art,” Catherine says.

Rolls With It: Catherine and Jack chose a classic Rolls Royce for their getaway car. “I wanted it to feel like people stepped back in time, whatever decade you were connecting with,” she says.

Pearls of Wisdom: The bride’s shoes included lace, sparkles, and pearl details. “Both of us are obsessed with that vintage, lounge bar feeling, and the pearls were an extension of that,” Catherine says.

<<

<< Shoulder to Shoulder:The dress designer’s warehouse is in Ukraine, which has since been shut down due to impending conflict. “It makes me love it even more that they’re supporting Ukrainian workers,” Catherine says. Catherine had the sleeve modified to create a more symmetric line, and she also removed the train so that the skirt was the same length from all sides.

Set the Mood: Catherine chose dark and moody tones rather that something more traditional for her bridesmaids’ pajamas to reflect the overall aesthetic of the wedding. “I love dark colors—I think it’s more intimate like that,” she explains.

All Aglow: The guests were given monogrammed matchboxes with the couple’s now-shared last initial to light the sparklers. “It was misting outside, so it was just magical,” Catherine recalls.

<<

Dressed to Dance: Catherine donned a dress by Nookie, an Australian retailer, for the reception. The couple shared a private last dance to “Lovers Rock” by Sade. “She’s my all-time favorite, and my dad was obsessed with her,” Catherine recalls of her late father. “It was super personal and felt like part of my dad was there with us, listening to her alone together.”

<< Sage Advice: Catherine laughs that the couple didn’t spend much time together once they made it to the reception, which was held in the Adolphus' French Room. “He was on the dance floor, and I was visiting with people,” she says. “We tried to slow down—that was the advice we had been given by people." On Cloud Nine: Falon collaborated with florist Hailey Khan of Venus & Co. to create a hanging floral display featured in the tented reception. The floating arrangement included manzanita branches, white orchids, and baby’s breath.

W

hen college sweethearts Falon Miskelly and Carter Cowman met on a spring break ski trip in Colorado, neither of them was expecting to find their future spouse. s fate would have it, three years later they returned to the mountains, this time in Utah, for their New Year’s Day nuptials. The couple promised forever underneath the snow-capped mountaintops of Deer Valley, an ode to the fir t time they met. Falon wanted her all-white wedding to feel organic and to play off the beautiful alpine scenery. Together with her mom, Geri Miskelly, and planner, Ivory & Vine Event Co.’s Karli Spangler, she created a day full of texture and asymmetry, using different tones to bring the neut al affair to life. An impo tant part of this plan was the lack of greenery in the flo al arrangements. “We wanted to stay away from a Bohemian vibe, which is tricky,” says flori t Hailey Khan of Venus and Co. Instead, she created a whimsical hanging display for the tented reception, using various types of orchids and dried flo als. For Falon, the day turned out even better than she could’ve imagined. “Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing,” she reminisces. “It was absolutely perfect.”

Icy Reception: The couple chose to wed at Montage Deer Valley because of its beautiful scenery before moving the party to the St. Regis at Deer Valley, which had an ideal outdoor area for their tented reception. Even though a pre-wedding blizzard made guest transportation tricky, the pay-off of utilizing the two venues , they felt, was worth it. ’Tis the Season: Florist Hailey Khan wanted to stay true to the season and surroundings throughout the floral design. To supplement the centerpieces, she made frosted glass vases to give the illusion of ice.

STAYING TRUE TO YOU

In our age of Instagrammable weddings and picture-perfect Pinterest boards, brides and planners alike can feel the pressure to conform to a certain standard. But planner Karli Spangler worked with bride Falon Miskelly to create a day that was uniquely suited to her. For Karli, this meant finding a way to keep a monochromatic look interesting. Many white weddings include lots of greenery, a detail of which Falon wasn’t a fan. Instead, she found ways to incorporate different m terials and textures that stayed true to the color palette. For Falon, this meant including details that felt personal to her, and leaving out the ones that didn’t. During the planning process, she had a conversation with her mom about incorporating the something old, new, borrowed, and blue tradition. “We thought about it so hard, and just realized that we are not those people,” says Falon.

Once upon a time, before Facebook became synonymous with old people and bad information, the platform connected young coeds with good intentions. Case in point: Back in 2007, shortly before starting her freshman year at Rice University, Esra Gumuser logged on and friended the cutest boys in her class. Geoffr y Alex just so happened to receive one of those friend requests. While there wasn’t an immediate love connection, the pair finally became acebook official ter running into each other at a wedding in Chicago five years po t-graduation. “She asked me to save her a seat, and I did, even though I wasn’t sure she meant it,” Geoff s ys. “We ended up taking a fun selfie to ether, and I thought, ‘We really look good together.’ ” Esra was smitten, too. “Geoff charmed me. e got me whatever I needed throughout the night, and later, he asked me if he could kiss me,” she says. Although Esra had just started medical school in College Station and Geoff was workin as a data engineer in Houston, they decided to give a relationship the old college try. Three years later, Geoff popped the que tion. And on September 18, 2021, the pair said “I do” at the Fort Worth Zoo, an outdoor-friendly pandemic pivot that played perfectly with the celebration’s yellow tones and natural materials.

A Walk to Remember: After saying “I do,” the couple simply strode a few paces over to a large tent for post-nuptials dinner and dancing.

Fantastic Beasts: “When you’re at a venue like the zoo, it’s like you’re a kid again,” says Georgette. The bride and groom made sure to take five from mingling with family and friends to feed the giraffes.

THE ZOO & HUE

While designing Esra and Geoff ’s big day, planner Georgette Poole of Sarabeth Events was presented with two specific challen es: introducing plenty of yellow, Esra’s favorite color, and figuring out how t pull off a wedding during Covid After the pandemic played havoc with the couple’s Plan A, Georgette suggested relocating to the Fort Worth Zoo. “Esra loved the idea from the start,” she says. “She had gone to camp there as a kid and had such good memories there.” The planner layered in modern and nostalgic elements, as well as a big punch of sunny delight. “All the different yellow were crucial,” Georgette says. “But I also loved bringing in details that were as meaningful as they were decorative, like the Turkish Delight laid out on all the tables. Pretty touches that are also very personal don’t happen at every wedding.”

Ride Or Die: Instead of taking off in a limo, the couple left the reception on a party bus with their wedding party and family

Guiding Lights: Rattan chandeliers decorated with greenery created a rustic focal point above the dance floor.

Cake Boss: When Esra met with the folks at Creme de la Creme Cake Company, she had but one request: “An all-yellow cake!” She says they more than met the challenge with this “epic” confection made from almond cake with apricot jam filling—a nod to the apricot trees Esra remembers from childhood summers spent in Turkey.

Tying the Knot: Before walking down the aisle, Esra received a pair of helping hands as she donned her Carolina Herrera “Lyla” gown.

It’s the (Table)Tops: Inspired by the jungle-like backdrop, wedding planner Georgette Poole created a romantic setting with a mix of bright yellow flowers and greenery, rattans and jutes, silver and wood, and printed menus and table assignments by Silt & Pine.

<<

A Sunny Disposition: At the head table, Georgette chose white linens with yellow detailing that tie in with the abundance of roses, Billy balls, ranunculus, and snapdragons, and set the stage for golden goblets, silver Turkish Delight bowls, and woven placemats.

Ceiling Fan: Because the zoo’s covered structure is so large, Georgette added a wash on the ceiling to help make it feel more intimate. “It created this fun atmosphere for dancing,” she explains. “It had a vine detail to it, which was an homage to the jungle feel of the zoo.”

Animal Snackers: Before guests enjoyed late-night snacks like freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, kettle corn, and cotton candy, they had a chance to offer giraffes some healthier nibbles. << THE DETAILS: Ce re mony/Re ce ption Site : Fort Worth Zoo Photographer: Be atBox Portraits Bridal Gown Designer: Carolina Herrera Bridal Gown Retailer: Neiman Marcus Bridal Hair & Makeup: Erin Blair Makeup Groom’s Attire: Ermenegildo Zegna at Saks Fifth Avenue, Boston, MA Bridesmaids’ Dresses Designer: Reformation Bridesmaids’ Dresses Re tailer: Re formation, Dallas Groomsmen’s Attire: The Black Tux Flowers: Fre e sia Dallas Stationery: Silt & Pine Cake: Crème de la Crème Cake Company Catering: Fort Worth Zoo Music: Serenata Strings (ceremony); Manhattan Band, Jordan Kahn Music Company (re ception) Lighting: BEYOND Dallas Transportation: Igport Limos Wedding Rentals: La Tavola Fine Linen Rentals; Perch Event Décor; POSH Couture Rentals Wedding Planner: Sarabeth Events Wedding Designer: Georgette Poole, Sarabeth Events Additional Vendors: Ashton Hotel

Home Sweet Chuppah: Naomi and the Branching Out team spent lots of time designing the chuppah, the ceremony structure that’s meant to represent a home. “It was beautiful both in how it looked from the outside and in photos, but also in terms of the actual importance of what the structure represents,” says Naomi.

After four years of dating, Michael proposed privately in the couple’s hotel room in Paris, followed by a celebratory lunch overlooking the Eiff l Tower. But when the pandemic

Raise a Glass: “We planned it remotely, for the most part, so we didn’t see it in person until October before our wedding,” recalls Naomi, who selected blue goblets, blue-and-white china, and gold-rimmed chargers via photos and FaceTime calls.

Quality Over Quantity: “We had gone through a lot in the pandemic, and we had made the decision … to have a smaller, more intimate wedding,” says Naomi. In the end, the guest count was under 50—which allowed the couple to spend plenty of time with each of their guests. “People say it’s the most magical day, but I really do feel that way in terms of both how it looked but also how happy we were on the day,” she adds.

ngineers are by definitio measured, so this is not a love-at-fir t-sight story. In fact, Allie Hawkes and Jim Templeton weren’t even all that friendly back when they graduated from SMU’s engineering program back in 2014. That all changed when they both ended up taking jobs at AT&T. But even as they warmed up to one another, neither was all that anxious to throw caution to the wind. “We were friends for a long time before we started dating, partly because we were coworkers, and we didn’t want to complicate things,” explains Allie. “It took Jim moving to Denver for us to realize that we wanted something more.” For their fir t date, Jim organized a

sweet outing that included dinner and a walk around White Rock Lake. Twoand-a-half years later, he achieved a near-perfect Christmas Eve proposal at another urban park—a very famous one at that. “He surprised me with a secret trip to New York City, which is my very favorite place in the whole world,” says Allie. “He proposed at Belvedere Castle in Central Park.” When it came time to start planning the big day, the pragmatic pair found they were already on the same page about the venue. “We both always knew we wanted to get married at Jim’s family’s house,” says Allie. “There’s something really special about getting married at a place where we’ll continue to spend a lot of time and make future memories.”

<< By the Book: Jim and Allie both love to read, so it felt right that their wedding should be inspired by a scene out of a romantic novel. “[Planner] Molly [Rasmussen] had the idea to print our guest seating chart onto a life-sized book, organized like an index,” says Allie.

BOOK SMARTS

A Warm Welcome: Molly says tents can often feel industrial and cold. To counter that, she had Stageworks create an elegant façade and laser-cut doors complete with crystal handles.

<<

Mark Your Spot: Guests were encouraged to start their own reading adventures with personalized bookmarks thoughtfully placed atop the beautifully set tables.

Molly Rasmussen of Pop Parties has planned events for the Templeton family for years, but when Allie and Jim came to her for help with their wedding, she wasn’t content to rest on her laurels. “It’s always a fun challenge to try to outdo ourselves,” says Molly. While the setting was nothing short of grand—the wedding and reception took place in a 10,000-square-foot, split-level tent—every last detail was tailored specifically to the bride and groom. “Allie and Jim are both incredibly intelligent. Both graduated with honors at SMU,” says Molly. “Reading, education, and adventure are all traits I associate with them.” In that spirit, the couple decided they wanted to detail their love story for the wedding programs complete with illustrations by Color Box Design & Letterpress. From there, Molly took the literary theme to new heights with a massive index-inspired table assignment piece and personalized bookmarks at every place setting. “I love that Allie let me take some super cute risks along the way of this totally unique, incredibly elegant wedding,” says the planner.

Sweet Suite: Originally, the wedding palette was going to be lighter pinks and peaches. “When we moved it to the fall [due to Covid], we wanted to bring in richer, darker tones,” says Allie. “I ended up loving those really rich, deep tones more than the original colors.” The dark pink especially made a statement via table linens, the bridesmaid’s robes, and the stationery by Color Box Design & Letterpress.

<< History Lesson: The idea for the literary wedding program inspired the theme for the entire day. “We wanted to organize each part of the night like chapters in a book,” says Allie. The booklet included the tale of how the couple met, fell in love, and got engaged.

A Beguiling Aisle: Guests felt as though they were walking through a field of white roses on the way to their seats thanks to David Kimmel’s dramatic floral design.

Fine Tuned: The 10,000-square-foot tent was a split-level build. Dinner was served in one portion, while an elevated section provided plenty of room for lounging, dancing, and dessert. DISCO FEVER

Disco Awe: A five-foot-wide disco ball, rented from Beyond, hung over the dance floor.

Cara Cruz Robbie Valach September 4, 2021

Zugey Garcia Jason Morin November 21, 2021

“In another life, I know I was a go-go dancer at Studio 54,” says Cara Cruz of the inspiration behind her disco-themed bash at The Ritz-Carlton Dallas. Having tied the knot the previous year in a Covid-downsized ceremony, she and groom Robbie Valach wanted this reception to be a “fun and light-hearted celebration” for their nearest and dearest.

Harry Potter has been an integral part of Zugey Garcia and Jason Morin’s courtship, which started with a date to LeakyCon and culminated with a themed scavengerhunt proposal. So it was only natural that on their big day, they would bring their “Potter love story full circle.” A teacher by trade who’s used to creatively integrating themes into her curriculum, the bride developed and executed many of the thematic elements herself. “It would not have felt like ‘us’ without them,” she says.

KEY ELEMENTS Decor: The bride tapped the event design team at Branching Out Events to bring her disco fantasies to life. “I told them I wanted to dance under the biggest disco ball in Dallas, and they delivered!” remembers Cara. The oversized disco ball hung over a gold glitter dance floor from Center Stage Floors. Flowers: Branching Out leaned into the theme when it came to florals, too. “We wanted plenty of metallics and shine—so some foliages were hand-painted gold,” says director of client services and marketing Katy Roden. “We used more architectural flowers such as orchids and tulips for a clean, youthful, and modern look.” Bride Cara was blown away by the results: “Studio 54 was never this beautiful!” The Bar: Signature cocktails with names like “Bad Mama Jama” and “The Macho Man” were served with disco-ball drink stirrers.

Don’t Croak: In addition to a themed cake and cookies, guests could satisfy their sweet teeth with chocolate frogs. Good Spellers: Guests were given wands to hold aloft as the couple recessed down the aisle.

The color scheme: “At Hogwarts, students are divided into four houses, depending on what qualities they best represent,” explains the bride. “I am a Slytherin, and my house colors are black and green.” For that reason, green table linens were offset by black signage and attendants’ attire. Food and drink: The couple transformed The Schoolhouse’s bar into the “Leaky Cauldron,” which served signature drinks including a blackberry margarita called the Death Eater’s Smoke and a Felix Felicis, which is liquid luck in the wizarding world. For dessert, guests had their choice of wedding cake—which Blondies Bakehouse created with text from the books printed in frosting—as well as chocolate frogs and on-theme iced cookies.

Have a Ball: A custom disco ball logo, designed by Papellerie, also appeared on the cake and stage backdrop.

Groove Thing: Cara’s showstopping sequin dress was a custom creation by Dallas designer Patti Flowers. Notes planner Laura Buchanan of Allison Baker Events, “We also requested that guests wear ‘Groovy Cocktail’ attire”—a dress code some took more literally than others.

KEY ELEMENTS

Give a Hoot: The groom wore cufflinks to represent Harry’s pet owl, Hedwig.

Decor: Just about every decorative choice was significant, from floating candles suspended above the dance floor to the replica Gryffindor sword the couple used to cut their cake.

Sealed with a Kiss: Invites and day-of paper goods—like the Daily Prophet programs— were all on theme.

Though Rachel Worthey and Chris Martin officiall said “I do” in a courthouse ceremony in 2020, they insist that had no bearing on their decision to host a Sleepy Hollow–themed celebration at the Nasher Sculpture Center. “The theme was always the intention,” Chris says. “Getting the ceremony out of the way [just] meant no one would see me cry uncontrollably.” Planner Wendy Kay of Birds of a Feather Events, who helmed the Halloween weekend affai , says the couple considered other themes, including Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings, before landing on a concept that united Rachel’s love of “cheesy horror flicks” with Chris’ favorite holiday.

KEY ELEMENTS

KEY ELEMENTS Decor: A stickler for getting the details right, planner Wendy Kay watched Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow on repeat leading up to the celebration. She repurposed elements from the film, like a bird-and-cage thaumatrope— a dual-sided disc that creates a superimposed optical illusion when twirled—as escort cards. Other touches included a headless horseman figure, faux crows and dead foliage that accented floral displays by Max Owens Design, and lanterns that took the place of bridesmaid bouquets. Linen choices were also intentional, with Wendy selecting spiderweb-like leather overlays and black lace to evoke the witch’s wardrobe in the film.

Spin Doctors: The thaumatrope escort cards were designed by Southern Fried Paper, with calligraphy by Ragan Hope.

Rated Arr: Guests were invited to wear costumes, which most of their friends were happy to oblige.

Attire: A directive to come in costume lead to one memorable moment with Rachel’s dad. “He was extremely worried I pulled a prank on him, having him show up in costume while the other guests wore normal outfits,” she remembers. “I honestly might do this sort of thing, so he wasn’t totally off the mark!” The Playlist: Rachel selected songs from favorite spooky flicks like Edward Scissorhands, Hocus Pocus, and The Nightmare Before Christmas to set the tone during cocktail hour.

The Venue: The Fort Worth Zoo was the biggest driver of the theme. As planner Georgette Poole of Sarabeth Events notes, “There are some pros to hosting a wedding at the zoo! For an additional price, they offer an animal outreach program that will showcase a handful of different zoo friends within the cocktail hour for your guests, along with the ability to do giraffe feedings.” The Cake: Rachel’s leucistic ball python, Lucy, became the muse for the couple’s wedding cake. Georgette concepted the four-tiered confection that had a “subtle snakeskin texture that wrapped around.”

When exotic pet veterinarian Rachel Ellerd was preparing to wed Eric Siu, she had a singular priority for the big day. “I honestly didn’t have any preferences about the cake, decorations, or food,” she says. “Literally the only thing I really cared about was having giraffes t our wedding.” After learning that the Fort Worth Zoo was Sssay Cheese: available for events, the bride Rachel’s pet python, knew it was the perfect place Lucy, joined her for for an animal-themed affai . bridal portraits. “Having it at the zoo was completely non-negotiable,” she says. “So much so that when the zoo told us the dates we were looking at were filling up, we a tually Let’s Neck: booked the venue before “Fun fact: we were even engaged.” Giraffes love the color white so they’re immediately drawn to brides!” says planner Georgette Poole.

Give Me Some Skin:

Crème de la Crème Cake Company created this reptilian-inspired cake.

Special Guests: “Many people take their bridal portraits with their dogs, but my photographer, Tracy Autem, was totally down to take photos of me and my pet snake,” remembers Rachel, who credits her entire wedding team for being supportive. In fact, as a surprise to the bride, Justine Chapura of Justine’s Flowers created a floral collar for Rachel’s right-hand reptile to wear in the photos—a touching gesture that meant a great deal. “We know brides love incorporating their pets,” Georgette says, “so we felt Rachel deserved that same freedom, even though a snake isn’t the first thing that comes to mind!”

PRACTICAL(LY) MAGIC By J e s s i c a O t t e Photography by C h a r l a S to re y P h o to g r a p hy

Following a whirlwind courtship years in the making, a spellbound pair say “I do” with an elegant and bewitching Austin extravaganza.

Well Suited: Anna wanted an Old Hollywood feel for her ceremony gown, choosing Reem Acra’s “Heirloom” gown. Along with a Brackish feather bow tie, her stylish groom donned a custom Knot Standard tux with a velvet jacket that tied into touches of the fabric used throughout the festivities.

ecisiveness, Anna Cook admits, is not one of her strong suits. Yet she made swift and certain work of two important ones: Her person and her planner. She met beau Skyler Wheeler the week they both transferred to TCU, but for the next seven years, the timing was never right. “And then she moved to Chicago, and I thought she was gone,” Skyler says. But in August 2020, he came across a profile of pa ticular interest while perusing Hinge: Anna’s. “We finally went out and it wa the best fir t date ever,” he says. With social calendars cleared by quarantine and plenty of intimate, at-home dates on the agenda, their relationship moved quickly. “It’s almost like The Bachelor in reverse,” Anna says. “You get all the good, daily-life stuff and none of th extravagant stuff th t can distract you.” Just four months later, the girl who has trouble making decisions was sure it was forever and accepted his Christmas Day proposal. The bride-to-be was equally as convicted about hiring planner Wendy Kay of Birds of a Feather Events. Armed with a few key directives and a mutual obsession with Harry Potter, Wendy hit the ground running, orchestrating a grand, tented celebration for nearly 300 that managed to feel intimate and intensely personal. Though Wendy had some initial misgivings about the green-and-white color palette—“I don’t really have that in my portfolio; I do a lot of colorful weddings,” she says—she challenged herself to make the neutral scheme sing. On November 20, 2021, the Fort Worth– based couple said “I do” in a timeless and elegant celebration that, thanks to Wendy’s eye for detail and lots of custom touches, was anything but ordinary.

Anna Cook Skyler Wheeler November 20, 2021 Soft Statement: When outlining their vision to planner Wendy Kay, Anna and Skyler’s wish list included a tent, a bevy of candles and flowers, and a soft color scheme. “I knew I wanted neutrals,” says the bride, who notes that she dresses mostly in subdued tones. “I just love the timelessness of them—I feel like you won’t ever regret it.” Wendy worked to turn up the volume on the muted scheme, incorporating sage green linens, rich textures, and luxe details.

<< The Wand Chooses the Wizard: The Harry Potter devotees had a display of replica wands that served as guest favors and exit props. “They were an absolute hit,” Skyler laughs. “I mean, there were grown men running to make sure they got the ones they wanted.” Wide Open Spaces: The couple chose the Omni Barton Creek because it could accommodate not only the sizable ceremony and reception—aided by a nearly 7,000-square-foot tent—but could also host their 300 guests for the weekend.

TRUE TO YOU

Wedding planner Wendy Kay prides herself on her ability to convey her clients’ personalities through idiosyncratic wedding-day details. It’s the primary reason she only books four weddings per year—to allow her the opportunity to get to know clients intimately “to really think about who these people are, what they’re about, and what their wedding should look like, instead of just dropping two people into any generic wedding design.” She starts their working relationship by administering extensive questionnaires, which reveal a couple’s favorite hobbies, colors, or—in Anna and Skyler’s case— books. “Part of the reason they hired me is because we share a mutual obsession with Harry Potter,” Wendy says. “So I knew we had to have some sort of Harry Potter aspect within the wedding.” Oftentimes, though, Wendy knows a great deal about what makes a client tick even prior to the design stage, as she considers their personalities before taking them on. “I actually market directly to certain Enneagram types,” the planner says. That perfect client-professional match is what, she says, allows them to make matrimonial magic happen. 74

Fall Finery: The couple marveled at Wendy’s ability to make a 300-person reception feel “intimate and cozy.” In addition to various lounge areas, dimmable lighting, and tent draping, Wendy says personal touches for guests go a long way toward creating an intimate atmosphere. Here, each placesetting included a charger, china, upgraded glassware and flatware, and a menu personalized with the guest’s name.

<< Raising the Bar: Wendy turned to Top Tier Rentals’ Jordan McCarter, who built a number of custom furniture pieces for the event, including this fluted bar (as well as the secondary Potions & Elixirs bar), the champagne tower, stage facade, and more. Vines served to soften the chandeliers in the pavilion space. Level Up: A modified champagne tower provided the Old Hollywood feel Anna was after with less risk. “I call it a ‘safe champagne tower,’ ” says Wendy of the structuresupported display, “where one falling over doesn’t take the whole thing out.” <<

<<

Making an Entrance: Austin-based florist Remi + Gold accented the tent’s exterior with fresh flowers and greenery in Anna’s desired palette.

Growth Opportunity: The ceremony took place in the Omni’s Wildflower Atrium, which features a triptych of flower reliefs. They served as inspiration for day-of paper goods and signage, which Chelsea Carpenter of Southern Fried Paper accented with embossed and plaster florals.

Scent of a Woman: Sarah’s best friend gifted her with a fragrance from Aerin to wear on her big day. Now, Sarah brings it back for special date nights with Michael. “He always notices when I’m wearing it,” she says. “It brings back the best memories.”

Guests:

42 Blush-ing Bride: Sarah chose a 100-inch Sara Gabriel “Julianne” veil with a blusher to accent her Jenny Yoo “Marnie” slip dress.

Al Fresco: Dinner was held al fresco on the Fearing’s open-air patio known as The Ocaso. With only 42 guests in attendance, the intimate affair had the feel of an elegant dinner party. <<

Less is More: Planner Allison MacNealy of Allison & Co. Events enjoys planning smaller weddings, which she says allow more opportunities for extra personal details. “Guests kept saying how much everything felt like Sarah and Michael,” she says. “They wanted to focus on their marriage, and it was really beautiful.”

First Dance: “More” by Frank Sinatra

<< To Each Their Own: Instead of a traditional tiered wedding cake, Sarah worked with the pastry chef at Fearing’s to create individually sized lemon-flavored cakes for her guests. Digging Deep: The couple chose to partake in the old Southern wedding tradition of burying the bourbon. As the custom goes, if you bury an unopened bottle of the spirit upsidedown at your celebration site a month before your “I do’s,” you’ll have nice weather on the big day. One of Sarah and Michael’s close friends dug up the bottle of Buffalo Trace for the couple and shared a drink with them, sealing their good luck.

“I wanted my wedding to feel like a Frank Sinatra song,” says Sarah Harvey of her autumnal nuptials to Michael Newman.

Hosted at Fearing’s restaurant in The Ritz-Carlton, her dreamy “garden-inspired dinner party” was one for the ages. A veteran of the wedding industry herself, Sarah knew she wanted an intimate day centered around details that would be special for her and her future spouse. She opted out of a large wedding party, for instance, in favor of “honorary couples” whose marriages the couple admire that preceded her down the aisle. The night ended with a reception lit from the glow of hundreds of tea lights, as the couple danced to the classics with their loved ones—but not before a surprise visit with Jerry Jones, who just so happened to be at the restaurant. For the Dallas Cowboys super-fan bride, it was “definitely a highlight to an already special day.” —Lydia Brooks

Tying the Knot: Addison opted for a simple cake with a pale blue ribbon tied around the middle tier. “I wanted to use that pop of blue,” says Addison. “Sometimes I think simple can go a long way.” The antique Waterford champagne toasting coupes belonged to Addison’s paternal grandmother.

Something Borrowed: In addition to a pair of Jimmy Choo lace shoes, as well as a Van Cleef & Arpels necklace and earrings that were anniversary gifts from James, Addison wore her mother in law’s bracelet, which features blue stones, on the day of the wedding.

Addison Fontein James Currell III May 8, 2021 Clear Winner: Addison’s Justin Alexander gown was the first one she saw when she started looking online. “I loved the classic, elegant, timeless nature of it,” she remembers. “I tried on so many others and I kept getting drawn back to this dress.”

Addison Fontein and James Currell’s love story began in Philadelphia, where she was in law school and he

was working in banking. “I knew he was the one,” Addison remembers. James proposed in a sculpture garden in New Jersey, so it was only fitting that their wedding should take place in one, too—specifically, the gardens of Dallas’ Nasher Sculpture

Hosting with the Most: “There was a lot of thought put into the tablescapes,” says planner Meredith Commender. “Addison loves to entertain—she hosts grand parties at home—so it was important that her wedding have that feel too.” Round menu cards sat atop scalloped chargers, while napkins were embroidered with the custom monogram that appeared on the invitations, dance floor, and bar. <<

Center. Though they initially planned to postpone their May 8, 2021, wedding due to Covid, they decided two months out to see it through. “So we actually planned the wedding in 60 days,” laughs Addison. The choice ended up being the right one. Remembers the bride: “The best part of the

day was being with loved ones and friends again, in a way that we really couldn’t for the previous year or so.” —Teresa Bruno

<< Putting the “Me” in Menu: Guests enjoyed dinner al fresco in the Nasher Sculpture Center garden. James, a gifted cook, worked closely with the caterers to plan the menu, which included nods to his Spanish heritage (including Manchego cheese and Marcona almonds in the salad). Cheesesteak eggrolls were also served as a late-night snack to pay homage to his Philadelphia roots.

Gorgeous & Gracious: “Addison really wanted a lot of flowers to evoke that springtime feel,” says Meredith. Peonies, tulips, ranunculus, fringe tulips from Holland (an homage to Addison’s Dutch ancestry), hydrangeas, roses, and delphinium lined the aisle. Rather than let the blooms go to waste following the event, they were donated to a senior living home for a flower-arranging class.

Modern Trousseau: A true fashionista at heart, Emily donned four dresses throughout her wedding weekend—each memorable in their own right: Nardos Imam custom gowns for the rehearsal dinner (far left) and reception (far right), a Monique Lhuillier lace gown for the ceremony (second from right), and a fun mini dress for the after party.

stole the show. Says Alex, “She kept it classic, but she started trends.” <<

A Girl’s Best Friends: One of the couple’s top priorities was making sure they found a special role for their beloved dogs, Murphy and Reese, who served as ring bearer and flower girl.

Under the Big Top: The ceiling of the clear tent was lined in twinkle lights, giving the reception a romantic glow.

Weather It Well: When an inclement weather forecast forced the outdoor ceremony to be moved inside, Todd’s team sent a truck to Dallas to pick up cherry blossom trees—a last-minute addition to help fill in the cavernous altar. Blooms also lined the aisle and draped from the ceiling. “We wanted Emily to still have this feeling of getting married in a garden, even if we were inside,” says floral and event designer Todd Fiscus.

Take the Cake: The reception featured a tiered Mexican Vanilla cake adorned with sugar flowers from Austin-based The Cake Plate.

Mi Amor: While Lee’s sole focus was making sure Emily got the wedding of her dreams, the bride was equally concerned with her groom loving their wedding as much as she did. “It was so cute how much they adore each other,” says Katy. Love of a Lifetime: Emily and Lee chose the Commodore Perry, in part, because it’s a place they can continue to visit. Since their wedding day last fall, they’ve already returned for date nights.

<< Love, Mom: Emily’s mother, who owns a monogramming shop, embroidered cloth napkins for the event bearing a custom duogram created by K. Laine Design.

Pick a Seat: The reception tent mixed acrylic dining chairs with banquettes upholstered in plush velvet for a variety of silhouettes and textures.

<< Change of a Dress: Emily wanted a reception gown that was fitted and architectural with a modern twist. “She had a vision that the gowns would complement her look, while still standing out on their own,” says bridal designer Nardos Imam, who created both Emily’s rehearsal and reception dresses.

<< Class Act: Floral and wedding designer Todd Fiscus’ goal was to create a design that complemented the historic design of the Commodore Perry mansion. “We wanted it to feel classic and elegant,” he says. Pedestals and floral arrangements appear to float over the venue’s pool to stunning effect.

Sarah and Michael Newman When Covid regulations shut down Sarah and Michael Newman’s Argentinian honeymoon plans, they decided to put those funds towards their next major milestone as man and wife: buying a house! To commemorate the experience, they snapped this sweet new-home session with the help of Rebecca Crenshaw of Wilderlove Co., who also photographed their wedding (pg. 76) to stunning eff ct. “I love that she captures those raw emotions that you don’t know you’re experiencing in the moment,” says Sarah. As the newlyweds both work in the construction industry (Sarah in residential interior design, Michael in commercial construction), they plan to renovate their new abode themselves room by room. But first they wanted to document its “before” state for the sake of posterity. Says Rebecca of the specialness of such a session: “A new home is a fresh beginning but also an important part of the legacy your family is making.” —Lydia Brooks

Snap Happy Your wedding day is just the start of your relationship—and we don’t just mean with your spouse. Many wedding photographers work with past clients long after they’ve said “I do.” Get inspired by the milestone-marking sessions of these couples, each of whom have trusted their day-of documentarians to capture all of life’s biggest moments.

ANNIVERSARY THE CLIENT: ETHAN HALLIDAY AND PAULA WOLF THE PHOTOGRAPHER: A SEA OF LOVE

<

Paula Wolf and Ethan Halliday were one of thousands of couples who had to cancel their wedding plans in the wake of Covid, opting instead for a mini ceremony with their families that Paula nevertheless describes as “magical.” The feeling was mutual for photographers Morgan Chidsey-Brosnan and Blake Brosnan of A Sea of Love, who consider the scaleddown “I do’s” a career highlight. Remembers Blake: “Every single person they surrounded themselves with that day was a light.” As their first anniversary approached, Paula remembers, “We

MATERNITY

When Aleksis Alvarado and Nikka AghazadehAlvarado were awaiting the arrival of daughter Carolina, choosing a photographer for their maternity session was a no brainer. The couple had worked with Morgan Chidsey-Brosnan and Blake Brosnan of A Sea of Love on their wedding day and knew the duo would be able to honestly capture the anticipation the soon-to-be parents were feeling. “They have a unique way of shooting that invokes emotion,” says Aleksis. “They were very meticulous in capturing those natural pauses or sudden looks that happen when you don’t think anyone is looking.” The couple had a strong sense of how they wanted their images to feel, and their photographers more than met the challenge, suggesting the texture- and color-rich Trinity Institute (a historic retreat center in Tehuacana, Texas) as a location. “Their elevated style really fit the highbrow, weird nature of the location,” says Blake. “That isn’t easy to pull off—it was all them.” —Lydia Brooks

THE CLIENT: CHAD AND HILLARY ROBERTS THE PHOTOGRAPHER: WILDERLOVE CO.

Everyone’s got to start somewhere, and for photographer Rebecca Crenshaw of Wilderlove Co., that somewhere was with Chad and Hillary Roberts. “They trusted me and believed in me when I had no clue what I was doing,” remembers Rebecca of the couple who, in 2014, became the first clients to hire her to shoot their wedding. “We knew she had talent,” remembers Hillary, who has since enlisted Rebecca to take newborn photos of each of her and Chad’s three daughters, Kate, Ellie, and Hattie; professional headshots; and many a family session. “We always feel that she captures our personalities perfectly and makes sure that we never feel staged or posed to the point that it doesn’t reflect who we are,” Hillary says. “We love how comfortable our girls are with ‘Ms. Becca.’ ” The Robertses enjoy seeing how their family has grown and changed through the images—a testament to the power of photography that’s echoed by their friend and trusted partner. “Life goes really fast, memories and details fade, kids grow up, and no one is guaranteed a tomorrow,” says Rebecca. “Taking photos freezes time—not just for you, but for your kids, and their kids.” —Jessica Otte

really just wanted some photos that felt like us—normal us—at this moment.” Inspired by a treasured vintage photo of Paula’s parents, the couple chose Austin’s High Noon—one of their favorite bars—as the site for an intimate and personal anniversary shoot. Morgan and Blake are always happy to have a chance to catch up with past clients, but also to continue to up their own game. “We really think after looking at their wedding photos during post production for so long, we truly get a great feel on how to even better capture our couples the next time,” says Blake. —L.B.

NEWBORN THE CLIENT: PAUL AND MAGGIE HICKEY (AND BABY MERRITT) THE PHOTOGRAPHER: MATT AND JULIE WEDDINGS

<

When Maggie and Paul Hickey were selecting a photographer for their 2018 wedding, they met with Matt and Julie Norine of Matt and Julie Weddings at the advice of their planner, who thought their personalities would mesh well. That hunch turned out to be right—and as a bonus, the photographers’ timeless approach similarly suited the couple’s tastes. “It looks like it is always shot in the prettiest light of the day,” Maggie says. In the years since their “I do’s,” the Hickeys have enlisted their favorite shutterbugs four more times—including for maternity portraits and this newborn session with daughter Merritt, born July 14, 2021. “It’s

so fun for us to be able to follow our clients through life’s biggest moments,” Julie says. “As a mom myself, I feel like I get to connect with my clients on a whole new level once they become parents.” While going with the same photographers time and again has aesthetic benefits—the consistency of style makes the gallery wall in the Hickeys’ primary bedroom especially pleasing to the eye— Maggie says that’s not the main reason they stick with their trusted team. “Getting professional photos done can be awkward,” she says, “but since we know Matt and Julie so well, each session just feels so natural and fun.” —J.O.

BOUDOIR <

THE PHOTOGRAPHER: ELLEN ASHTON PHOTOGRAPHY

More and more brides are indulging in keepsake boudoir photography as a gift to their soon-to-be spouse, but a sensual shot like this one—captured by photographer Ellen Ashton of Ellen Ashton Photography—makes a great anniversary gift, as well. While more modest types may have historically shied away from such a session, Ellen seeks to break any stigmas that surround boudoir photography, proving here that it can be elegant and tasteful to meet a bride’s comfort level. “I’m a big believer that boudoir does not have to be raunchy,” she says. “In fact, I prefer for my boudoir sessions to leave something to the imagination. I think it’s a beautiful way to celebrate the female body without exploiting it.” Though the pictured image was part of a professional shoot, styled by Sistered States, Ellen has shot many a past bride in various stages of their lives—a privilege she says she doesn’t take lightly. “It’s such an honor when I get to photograph someone’s wedding, but it’s an even better feeling when they come back again and again,” she says. “Sometimes the business of taking photos is really the business of people. When you try to love people well and celebrate their big victories with them, they remember.” —J.O.

WHO

Anyone who gave you a wedding or shower gift is owed a written thank you, even if you thanked them verbally upon receiving it. Though it’s not required to send a thank you note to your vendors, Heather says it’s always appreciated—especially if they did an exceptional job. Beyond that, she advises, “Thank your parents in an extra special way, especially if they have assisted financially in your big day. And a thank you gift is appropriate for anyone who hosts a shower, brunch, or any other gathering.”

WHEN

How long after receiving a gift do you have to send a note? Heather admits etiquette experts are all over the board on this topic. When in doubt, she says, sooner is better. But roughly: “Plan to have them all sent within three weeks of the shower and three months of the wedding.”

(ON) WHAT

“Gratitude is beautiful when it’s sincere, regardless of the quality or design of the delivery,” insists Heather. Still, beautiful, personalized stationery is a worthwhile investment. “Remember,” she says, “more people will see this than your wedding shoes!”

Don’t feel as though you must pen a lengthy missive or use formal jargon you ordinarily wouldn’t. “A great thank you note is a sincere three to four sentences and is written how you would normally speak,” advises Heather. As for the sign-off, Heather says you and your partner can each sign your names if you both contributed to the note—but that’s not required. “I advise that you divide and conquer the note writing and just sign your name if the note is from you,” she says.

UST YOU REALLY WRITE A THANK YOU NOTE TO EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO GAVE YOU A WEDDING GIFT? The short answer is: Well, yeah. “Remember that they made a special effo t for you that deserves your time and gratitude back in a special way,” says Bell’INVITO Stationers owner and etiquette expert Heather Wiese Alexander, who advises tackling a few each day to keep the task from becoming overwhelming. How else can you keep from looking a gift horse in the mouth? Heather offe s her guidance on gratitude.

JUST MARRIED

July 2021

Erin and Jimmy Watson June 1, 2019 From our Fall/Winter 2021 issue

He Said/She Said They say rain on your wedding day is good luck—and, likely, a good litmus test for how a couple will handle the ups and inevitable downs of marriage. Indeed, Erin and Jimmy Watson have navigated married life with the same good nature with which they weathered the (literal) storm that crashed their 2019 wedding. Since tying the knot, the pair have experienced both the fun (bathroom reno!) and less-fun (roof replacement!) parts of owning a home; balanced busy careers that have them on the road often; and patiently awaited the chance to take their Covid-delayed honeymoon to Argentina and Patagonia. They welcomed son Ben on June 24, 2021, a journey Erin describes as “more than we could have imagined—more love, more exhaustion, more fun, and more bottle washing.” But true to form, the couple have gracefully transitioned from Mr. and Mrs. to Mom and Dad. “We have approached parenting with such a team mentality,” Erin says. “It’s definitely brought us closer, with a deeper respect for one another.” They share the highs and lows of wedding planning, and how the unexpected moments can end up making the best memories. —Jessica Otte

Erin: I spent plenty of time thinking about my marriage to Jimmy, but had no specific vision around the wedding day itself. Jimmy: Not exactly, but I did think about eloping with a backyard celebration.

What was the smartest thing you did while planning your wedding?

Erin: Hire a wedding planner! Hiring Karli Spangler with Ivory & Vine Event Co. was the last hard decision we had to make during the planning process— she made the rest a breeze! Jimmy: Hire an awesome wedding planner (and take advantage of the food tastings).

What was the most fun part of wedding planning?

Erin: My parents live in Pennsylvania, so their trips to town for tastings and other planning items were always so fun. Wedding dress shopping with just my mom will always be a special memory for me. Jimmy: Wine-inspired discussions and planning sessions on the couch.

What was the hardest part?

Erin: Finalizing the guest list. It’s hard to reconcile people who had a big impact on your past, people you spend a lot of time with in the present, and people you know will be a big part of your future lives. Jimmy: Real talk: setting the guest list.

Most worthwhile wedding splurge? Erin: We had a lot of out-oftown guests and wanted to

give them a “Taste of Texas,” so we wound up serving Tex-Mex, barbecue, and farm-to-table for dinner. We couldn’t pick just one! Jimmy: Photos and video— memories hold their value pretty well.

Was there anything your spouse wanted that you weren’t sure about? How did it turn out?

Erin: Jimmy is such an outgoing person, he probably would have invited 600 people if he could. We compromised and had about 200 guests. Jimmy: Probably linens. They were great.

What was your biggest takeaway from the wedding-planning process?

Erin: Don’t forget it’s a really special day, but it’s just one day.

Also, guest count is the most influential factor in your wedding budget and spending. Jimmy: Hire an awesome planner (not just any planner).

What was the most memorable moment from your wedding day?

Erin: The skies opened up and it started pouring as soon as my dad started walking me down the aisle. It was so perfect. Jimmy: Kissing Erin in the rain.

Anything unexpected happen?

Erin: See above! The rain threw a major wrench in the day, but it was so special. Three years later, our friends still reminisce with us about that day. Jimmy: A casual Texas summer storm.

What would you do differently?

Erin: It was such a beautiful day, it’s hard to say I’d change anything. Jimmy: Marry her sooner.

What has surprised you most about married life? How (if at all) does it feel different?

Erin: We’re coming up on our three-year anniversary and being married to my best friend is so much more fun than I could have ever imagined. Jimmy: I wouldn’t say anything surprised me as much as it’s just been as great as I expected.

If you had one piece of advice for engaged or newly married couples, what would it be?

Erin: Don’t forget to focus on preparing for the marriage itself, not just the wedding day. Jimmy: Figure out each other’s wine preference early on.
