If I could impart one bit of wisdom to brides-to-be, it would be this: Don’t expect perfection—on your wedding day, or in your marriage. Perfection, if that even exists, would be, well, boring. And striving for such puts a level of pressure on ourselves that’s unhealthy at best. That’s why you won’t hear us talking about the “perfect” wedding day in this magazine. Instead, our goal with each and every issue is to help you find ways to create a day that’s true to who you are—whatever your style or budget. Fortunately, the couples in this issue seem to have already caught wise to this idea. I loved reading so many of the stories and hearing brides and grooms share advice they received while planning their own weddings, or things they learned along the way, and best of all, how special and completely themselves they felt on their big days. For instance, Robyn Sills, whose wedding to Travis Wedgeworth is featured on page 58, remembered some words the sales associate at her wedding salon shared with her as she struggled to decide on a dress. “You’re supposed to feel like the best version of yourself,” she was told. In the end, Robyn says, their celebration—though vastly diffe ent than what she may

have planned under diffe ent circumstances—brought out the very best in both her and her groom. Then there’s Sandyvel LopezZeledon, who said of her wedding to Kate Wagoner (pg. 70–71)—which was attended by 13 guests at the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek—”It was one of the first times in my life where I’ve been so comfortable just to be me and be surrounded by people that I love.” Talk about wedding day goals. Then we caught up with Michael Mahon and Harrison Edell (pg. 112), whose backyard celebration we featured in our Spring/Summer 2021 issue. Harrison’s advice for newly married couples? “Go easy on yourselves; nobody knows how to be the perfect spouse intuitively, not every day will be perfect, and all of that is OK.” My husband and I just celebrated our 16th anniversary, and I can say with certainty that we aren’t perfect, and neither was our wedding day—or any day since, for that matter. But that’s what makes life fun and interesting. The bumps along the way end up making the best memories. So enjoy the ride— bumps and all—and have fun planning a day that celebrates exactly who you are, together.

Best,

JAMIE LAUBHAN-OLIVER jamie@dmagazine.com

They took a similarly sentimental route for their engagement photos—including this one on the iconic tiled steps of Highland Park Village. “We picked Highland Park Village because of both of our childhood memories there,” Lauren says. “And it is one of our favorite date spots!” The couple tied the knot October 23, 2021, at The Filter Building. —Jessica Otte

One of the easiest ways to make your wedding-day decor feel intentional is to not overlook even the most minute details. Case in point: the velvet napkins at Evie Callaway and Drew Rino’s May 1, 2021, reception—which was held at The Nest at Ruth Farms— make the placesettings feel like anything but an afterthought.

Your ’maids will look lovely in jewel-toned velvet dresses.

Time to Shine

Size Matters

Learn what factors into the price of three wedding-day-ready earrings so you can choose the bling that’s in your budget.

Simply put, the size and overall weight of the diamonds is the major price driver here. Compared to the feather set, which boasts a total weight of 2.83 carats, Fallon says, “This set has 28 pear-shaped diamonds weighing 13.27 carat total weight and 14 marquise shaped diamonds weighing 3.42 total weight,” for a total of nearly 17 carats.

Ready for Anything

These stunners are actually adaptable, providing the ultimate ceremony-to-reception convertibility. Wear them as studs with an elegant updo for your “I do’s,” then let your hair down and attach the drop for a party-ready look. “This is for the standout bride who wants extra sparkle with flexibility,” says Fallon. Though the twoin-one factor drives a higher price, you can wear them for a multitude of occasions, even after your big day.

FEATHER DROP EARRINGS

Quality Over Quantity

Besides their considerable size, all four primary stones in these drop earrings are GIA-certified VVS in clarity, which Fallon notes “is considered very high quality.” The nearly flawless diamonds command a higher price.

Matchy Matchy

Finding stones that mirror each other exactly requires time and skill. “Matching four emerald-cut diamonds varying in size is an artform in itself,” says Fallon.

BUDGET

Under $50,000

With a fine jewelry pedigree spanning five generations, it’s safe to say the Bock family knows a thing or two about making your special occasions sparkle. Since 1977, the team at Bachendorf’s, their family-run Dallas institution, has been helping brides find the just-right pieces to mark one of life’s biggest milestones. “We are in the business of putting smiles on people’s faces,” says Bachendorf’s’ Fallon Bock. “Each bride is unique in what they want, but every bride has the same glow about them during the process.” Of course, prices can vary significantly based on a number of factors. Fallon breaks it all down.

DOUBLE EMERALD DIAMOND DROP EARRINGS

Creating fine jewelry requires a great deal of time, skill, and craftmanship—all of which is reflective in the price tag. The Bachendorf’s team maps each original design to the millimeter, then sends it to a casting house where a casting is created specifically to suit the selected stones. Finally, Fallon says, “One of our master jewelers sets each stone one by one, making sure each prong is securely attached to the stone.”

Small But Mighty

Though these earrings contain 404 diamonds between them, the smaller size of stone and overall carat weight helps keep the price accessible. “These earrings have a ton of diamonds for the price!” says Fallon. “They’re super fun, wearable, and give the client a statement piece.”

Sarah Sabatino appreciates the willingness to take a chance. In fact, it was partly Matt Newville’s “adventurous” personality that attracted her to her future husband in the first place. So it’s no surprise that their wedding included some arguably risky choices—a butteryellow cake and florals in “brighter blush, French blue, and a touch of gold”—which more than paid off. “We loved every piece of the speeches and toasts,” she says. “We had a really fun time dancing with everyone.” —Lydia Brooks Turn the page to see more of this wedding >>

Big-Screen Beauty: As a florist, Katie was inspired by the soft color palette juxtaposed with splashes of neon in the Sofia Coppola film Marie Antoinette. “It’s like the equivalent of wearing Converse under your ballgown,” says Katie. “I love to create floral designs that are beautiful to look at, but also provocative. CALFORNIA LOVIN’ REAL WEDDINGS

Claire Mueller and Carson Riggan married in sunny SoCal with a weekend full of ocean views and country club vibes.

On a Boat: In lieu of a bridal luncheon, the bride and groom planned a boat cruise around San Diego for their entire wedding party. “I wanted a chance for everyone to be together and enjoy the weather and views that California offers,” Claire says. The bridal party boat cruise was just another opportunity for playful custom moments, like this life ring designed by stationer Katherine Jezek with calligraphy by Laura Lines Calligraphy.

t was on their second date that Carson Riggan learned Claire Mueller was accidentprone—she spilled a drink all over someone’s leg. “My clumsiness persists today. This moment is something we reference often,” Claire laughs. In fact, due to said clumsiness, Claire had ankle surgery about a year into dating. But that’s when she figured out she wanted to mar y Carson. “I couldn’t drive, and Carson would come pick me up every night after my business school class let out,” she says. “He would be blaring some ridiculous music to make me laugh after hobbling to the car on my crutches.” Two years after meeting, Carson surprised Claire with a rooftop proposal and dinner with friends and family. As for the wedding, it went off without a hitch—or a y broken bones. They married on August 28, 2021, at the La Jolla Country Club in San Diego, the site of the couple’s fir t vacation with Claire’s family. “I love how La Jolla is laid-back and a little stuck in time. We wanted all of our friends and family to experience it,” she says. They treated their guests to three days of parties, a boat cruise, and a wedding night that ended in an epic dance party with not one, but two encores.

Coast Along: Claire and Carson chose a destination wedding in Southern California’s La Jolla neighborhood, where Claire’s family lived for a period of time. “We looked at a few other venues, but nothing compared to the views and feel of La Jolla Country Club,” she says.

<< A Good Deal: Katherine Jezek worked with Laura Lines Calligraphy to design a set of playing cards for the welcome boxes. Illustrations included scenes that reminded Claire and Carson of La Jolla—like sea lions, golf clubs, and tiles from the village—as well as the couple’s Goldendoodle, Bodie.

Guests:

250 First Dance: “You Make Loving Fun” by Fleetwood Mac Take it Outside: Even though the couple didn’t want a seated dinner, they still needed plenty of places for guests to sit, so they offered multiple vignettes of comfortable seating, as well as tables and chairs on the patio.

TAKE IT PERSONAL

Claire called on long-time best friend Katherine Jezek, a graphic designer by trade, to design about 30 pieces of personalized moments, from monogrammed towels for the boat cruise and custom flags for the pu ting green to custom-printed welcome boxes and koozies. The designer was called in early in the planning process to design the save-the-dates, and they worked together from there on out. “I like to think about weddings in the sense of a brand,” Katherine says. “Setting colors, design details, and a logo or monogram from day one helps to make sure everything is consistent throughout the entire weekend.”

62

Honeymoon: Big Island and Lanai, Hawaii

Take a Bow: Claire chose a dress by Peter Langner from the Bridal Salon at Neiman Marcus. “I fell in love with the fabric immediately because of the applique flowers,” she says. The original dress had a high neck, but Claire worked with Neiman Marcus to redesign the neckline. They also added a bow by designer Lela Rose.

Going Green: The bridesmaids wore Fame and Partners gowns in a beautiful green hue that played off the reception’s color scheme. “I thought the greenish blue would allow the flowers to pop,” Claire says. “I wanted a color that was neutral enough for the flowers, but something a little more fun.”

Custom Details: Claire asked long-time friend Katherine Jezek to design custom moments for the day, including the stationery suite. A custom 4-ply paper with slits for the woven-edge grosgrain ribbon are paired with a scalloped envelope liner. A details card featured a custom crest that was used throughout the wedding weekend.

Club Special: The couple said their nuptials at La Jolla Country Club in front of 250 of their friends and family. The ceremony was held on the fairway of the first hole. After, guests were treated to dinner and dancing in the ballroom.

A Sweet Ride: Following the ceremony, Claire and Carson took a celebratory spin in the golf cart that transported Claire and her father from the clubhouse to the green.

Having a Ball: “I wanted the ballroom to feel totally transformed,” Claire says. “Kathleen [Deery Design] had an artist do our band backdrop and make the leaves that were attached to the chandeliers to make it feel like the design was being pulled through the room.”

Simply Beautiful: Claire’s one request for wedding designer and florist Kathleen Deery was to choose organic, in-season stems. Her simple, white bouquet complemented the natural beauty of the venue.

Love is Sweet: The four-tiered wedding cake featured pressed flowers for an organic look.

A Toast on the Coast: Following the ceremony, a cocktail hour was held on the patio, where guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and live music as the sun was setting.

A Perfect Sendoff: The couple settled on a ranch-style wedding to celebrate with Devyn’s Texas-based friends and family before moving to Australia. The venue in Mineral Wells, Texas, was the perfect backdrop for the reception that was equal parts laid-back and elegant. “Everyone who attended was dressed in their best outfits but ate and partied like only a wild group in Texas can do,” says the bride.

In Bloom: Flowers—both lush blooms and textural elements—were placed in almost every corner of the tent, from the table settings and the reception entrance to an installation above the dance floor. “We wanted to create a copious amount of visual interest, and we knew that textural elements were going to do it,” says Wedfully Yours owner and creative director Linda Whitten.

quickly into a life-long romance. After their first date to Devyn’s favorite bookstore in Los Angeles, the pair decided that night that they’d be together forever. “We were so lucky to have had a year of

friendship under our belt,” Devyn Good Branding: “I wanted the stationery to be playful and play off the ranch,” says planner Shannon Ducker of Shannon Rose Events. A custom cattle brand was chosen as the couple’s wedding logo, which can be seen throughout the wedding-day design.

says. “Once we chose to date each other, we were inseparable.” After Marc proposed at the same bookstore, a whirlwind sevenweek wedding planning process commenced. The couple planned to move back to Marc’s native Australia, but first, they wanted to share their nuptials with Devyn’s Texas friends and family. On November 15, 2020, not only did they say “I do,” they also announced that they were expecting a baby with a touching speech by the groom. “It was epic,” Devyn says. “Even the band was crying.” —Ryan Conner

Late-Night Snack: the groom’s favorite noodles were passed in custom Chinese food boxes

Star Light, Star Bright: Planner Shannon Ducker and Peerless Tents designed a venue space that featured a clear tent dressed in soft chiffon. “As a surprise, we installed twinkle lights to transform the space come nightfall,” Shannon says. “I kept thinking of the song we sing here in Texas, ‘The stars at night are big and bright…’”

Coming Up Roses: “For Devyn’s bouquet we used garden roses, toffee roses, and soft white roses, accented with butterfly ranunculus, kangaroo paw, and scabiosa,” says Linda Whitten of Wedfully Yours Events. “Texture is one of my favorite design elements, so we incorporated fall foliage and grasses such as bunny tail and chocolate lace.”

Path to Heaven: “Romance was the focus of this pathway and we wanted to channel that through all of the senses,” Linda says. “We used delphinium for visual interest and blooming roses that gave the best scent.” Wedfully Yours Events also implemented textural fillers to soften the overall feel of the aisle design. “This gave Devyn a stunning pathway to meet her new husband,” Linda says.

Book Smarts: Each long table featured a taupe overlay, which fused the elegant and rustic aesthetics. The letterpressed menus were a bookinspired design, a nod to the bookstore where the couple had their first date.

Howdy Y’all: Welcome boxes included chips and salsa, mini Tito’s bottles, Texas pecans, a branded door hanger, and custom bandanas.

A Sweet Surprise: One of the highlights of the evening was a heartfelt speech given by the groom where he announced that the couple was expecting. “Aside from my immediate family and a few close friends, nobody knew we were pregnant, so we couldn’t wait to announce it,” says Devyn. “Marc loves a good build up, and he had the whole room in suspense.”

Shelby Owens Alec Zogas July 24, 2021 For Shelby Owens and Alec Zogas, the town of Crested Butte, Colorado, marks the beginning of their forever. Feeling Blue: Shelby selected a color palette—soft blue—and asked her bridesmaids and bridesman to pick their own wedding attire. Her maid of honor stands out in a blue-and-white patterned dress that’s cohesive with the others.

Mutual friends had tried to set them up in Dallas many times, but when the pair found themselves both in the Rocky Mountain town one New

Letter Perfect: A floral crest bearing the couple’s initials adorned the stationery set by Paradise Design Co. and appeared throughout the wedding-day details. “We used this monogram as a jumping-off point for the design process,” says planner Jacqueline Hill of Jacqueline Events.

Year’s, there was no denying it was kismet. Once engaged, the couple decided to celebrate their nuptials where their love story began, while blooms were still plentiful from the destination’s annual wildflower festival. “I wanted something unique to us,” says Shelby, who sought to enhance the wildflower

The cloth napkins, embroidered with various wildflower details, were a custom creation by Great Notations.

<< Ace of Laces: Shelby’s platform sneakers were custom painted by muralist Vivian Elmore, whom Shelby knows through her work as an interior designer.

His and Hers: The bride’s cake from Fancy Cakes by Lauren was vanilla with a cinnamon cream cheese frosting. The groom’s cake, which was shaped like a horned frog, paid homage to the Alec’s alma mater, Texas Christian University—which Shelby says was their very own Steel Magnolias moment.

Taking a Page:The floral escort cards were made of pages extracted from a reference book Shelby owns called The Flower Color Guide.

Natural Wonder: Of her Reem Acra wedding gown, Shelby says she loved the way the sequins on the dress looked like faux bois. “I felt like it really played into the flowers and the mountains and the trees,” she says.

Snap Happy: One of the first decisions Shelby and Alec made when planning their wedding was hiring photographer Charla Storey, who also took their engagement photos. “Having her as a cohesive look to the wedding was really important to me,” Shelby says.

Guests:

Local Branch: Topiaries were always part of Shelby’s vision for her wedding, but she quickly encountered a roadblock. “You cannot get topiaries in Colorado,” she says. Instead, florist Bramble & Bloom made faux topiaries with a Colorado twist— the trunks were made from aspen tree branches.

Family Ties: Kate and Sandy's guests—all 13 of whom are pictured here—all donned black, a striking choice by Sandy. The night was a sentimental—and fun—union of the brides' two families. Kate's father toasted the couple with a bottle of wine she brought back as a gift from a high school trip to Europe, which he'd saved as a surprise for the right occasion. Over dinner, remembers Sandy with a smile, "The string quartet was playing contemporary songs, and I remember at one point our moms were singing 'Despacito' together." Adds Kate, "There was a lot of joy."

The very night she received a message from Sandy Lopez-Zeledon on OKCupid, Kate Wagoner remembers, “I told my best friend

that was the woman I was going to marry.” She was right, though it took nearly a decade of mostly long-distance dating due to hopscotching school and work commitments before they’d say “I do.” Of their ultra-intimate celebration at the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, the couple, who now live in Seattle, say they wouldn’t change a thing: “It was one of the first times in my life where I’ve been so comfortable just to be me and be surrounded by people that I love,” remembers Sandy. “It was such a special day that I will cherish forever.” —Jessica Otte

<<

A Magical Meal: "Probably my favorite part was having dinner in the library," says Sandy. "It was our own little magical bubble for those two hours." Guests were able to order off the acclaimed Mansion Restaurant's menu—a perk for Kate, a self-proclaimed foodie.

Every Last Detail: No detail was spared for the intimate dinner. Says planner Julian Leaver of Julian Leaver Events, "The intimate weddings are so magical because you can treat each guest so, so special."

<<

<<

Pajama-rama: The brides got ready in white monogrammed pajamas—then donned them again during the dance hour (see photo, opposite page). When considering the advantages of such an intimate wedding, Kate recalls, "My mom was like, 'You could've never done that if you'd had a wedding with 100 people,' " before adding with a laugh, "I might've done that anyway."

Up on the Roof: After dinner, the couple and their guests headed up to the penthouse terrace for cocktails and dancing.

<< Freshly Picked: Sandy spearheaded aesthetic choices, including flowers. She incorporated blooms, like orchids, in honor of the women in her family, each of whom have flower names. She and Kate also worked with GRO Designs to create bouquets that represented them as individuals but were still complementary.

Honeymoon: Delayed due to COVID, they’re planning to go to Thailand on their one-year anniversary

<<

Processional Songs: “Halo” by Beyonce (Kate); “Is This Love” by Bob Marley (Sandy)

Flavors of Home: In addition to subtle tropical touches in the florals, the almond cake with vanilla buttercream frosting included a passionfruit filling as a nod to Panama, where Sandy was born.

The Perfect Pair: Sandy and Kate's priorities for the day were natural complements. "Sandy was really focused on the pretty parts, and Kate was more focused on how people were going to experience things. They match each other beautifully in that way," says Julian.

GOING TO THE CHAPEL Mild Texas temps helped a December wedding feel like fall—with seasonal foliage to spare—for a stunning Emerson affair.

Staying in Place: Blair and Mason chose The Emerson as their venue in part because of the on-site ceremony and reception spaces. “Blair’s main thing was she wanted to have the ceremony and reception in one spot,” says wedding planner KC Cloud of KC Cloud Events. “She didn’t want to force guests to drive all over Dallas for theevening.”

Dining in the Dark: In order to add dimension to the all-white venue, black chairs, flatware, and candlesticks were chosen to top the tables. A dinner from Babe’s Chicken was served family-style.

After four years of running in the same friend group at The University of Oklahoma, Blair Dwyer and Mason Haunschild found themselves living down the street from each other in Dallas. The pair soon began dating and four years later got engaged during a getaway trip to Charleston. Early into planning, Blair dreamt of a fall wedding at The Emerson. Even in December, the venue’s vibrant foliage played perfectly off the “fun y black tie” style of the day. Disco ball decor, velvet accents, and hanging flo als were included to add dimension and moodiness to the all-white venue. While the couple downsized their guest list of 200 to 100 due to COVID, Blair says the scaled-down size made the day feel even more special and intimate. The bride’s favorite memory was her final dance alone with her new husband under all the disco balls. “We got to breathe for a second before we left,” she remembers. “That was really special.”

Better Together: “We created a special shape to frame the bride and groom perfectly,” says florist Hailey Kahn of Venus & Co. of the altar arrangements.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT:

Signed, Sealed, Delivered: The letterpress invitations included floral details to reflect the design of the big day. Fall-ing In Love: The altarpiece included blooms to echo the season, including pampas grass, autumnal nandina, southern smilax, roses, and anthurium.

A Bundle of Tones: “She wanted a lush bouquet,” says Hailey of Blair’s vision. To deliver, Venus & Co. incorporated specialty garden roses, ranunculus, bracken fern, peony, lisianthus, sweet pea, and autumnal toned greenery.

<<

Sleek Sophistication: A frosted acrylic sign welcomed guests to the celebration.

<<

All Dressed Up: Blair chose velvet bridesmaids dresses for their texture and uniqueness. “I love how all the colors mixed together,” she says.

A Packed Party: Mini disco ball ornaments served dual purposes as escort cards and seasonal favors. “People could take them home and hang them up on their tree,” the bride says.

<<

In the Heights: To make the space feel full, planner KC Cloud says, “Bringing in color and playing with heights was key.” Suspended floral pieces hung over the tables along with woven bamboo light fixtures.

Nailed It: KC knew she’d captured her bride’s aesthetic upon hearing feedback from the bridesmaids. “They were walking around saying ‘This is so Blair’ all night,” she remembers.

Setting the Mood:Tables were covered in linens in moody hues then accented with seasonal flower arrangements and taper candles in blush tones. “Blair wanted a romantic and modern wedding with beautiful fall and early winter tones in burgundy, mauve, blush and hints of rust,” says Hailey. “And lots of beautiful candlelight.”

<<

For Lifey: Blair’s bridesmaids all gifted her with a sequin and fringe “wifey” jacket on the morning of the wedding. Though the couple’s original photographer bowed out just nine days before the wedding due to COVID concerns, KC was able to enlist photographer Charla Storey in the knick of time—with beautiful results.

<<

<< Dance All Night: Guests had so much fun dancing that the DJ played not one but two encores.

A Glitzy Mix: Above the reception space, hanging floral arrangements of roses, pampas grass, and nandina played against an assembly of disco balls. KC describes the vibe they were trying to achieve as “funky black tie.” “Blair and Mason love to have a good time, and they wanted to have a blast at their wedding,” she says. “What’s more fun than disco balls?”

What’s Your Flavor: To satisfy a range of sweet teeth, each tier of this cake by Sugar Bee Sweets was a different flavor: chocolate, almond vanilla, and strawberry.

Carole Anne Nelson Keaton Mayers July 10, 2021

For a couple who loves tradition, Carole Anne Nelson and Keaton Mayers met in a modern way—online. “I didn’t want to tell my kids we met on a dating app,” Carole Anne laughs. “But [a friend] encouraged me, so I made a profile, and Keaton was the only one I matched with.” After a year of dating, Keaton took Carole Anne for a drive around her family’s ranch. When Keaton set up a tripod to take a photo, Carole Anne had no idea he was actually catching their engagement on camera. Keaton got down on one knee before Carole Anne’s dad’s orange Chevy truck, which

Dancing on Air: The couple chose Colorado, a place close to their hearts, for their wedding. The location, Longspar White Tip Ranch, is owned by the bride’s parents. “On top of it being special, it’s a family place,” Carole Anne says. “[We thought] it would be really cool to get married here and come back with our kids years later.”

the couple would use as their post-reception send-off j st a few months later. —Sarah Bennett

A Girl’s Best Friends: The bride chose a soft, grey-blue for her bridesmaids that was reminiscent of the invitation suite. “Up on the mountains, it was breezy—that was the idea behind the ribbons on the florals, too,” Carole Anne says. “Everything blew in the wind.” Harper, the bride’s English cream golden retriever, served as the ring bearer.

<< Rocky Mountain High: The couple chose more masculine outdoor lounge furniture and more feminine pieces inside the tent to represent the joining of two personalities. Fire pits were lit as the evening got cooler, so guests could grab a drink and enjoy the view.

Gather Round: The couple opted for food stations rather than a formal seated dinner. “We still wanted to have a family feel of sitting down at a big table and eating with everyone,” Carole Anne says. The layout of the reception featured both long and round tables, with bright floral centerpieces.

I Do, With a View: “Our faith is very important to us, so our ceremony was where we had the most fun and emphasis,” says Carole Anne. The couple took communion together after exchanging vows in front of a structural altarpiece that featured florals by Bows + Arrows. Summer Spray: Amid the traditional invitation suite, the bride chose softer florals for the ceremony. She wanted the color scheme to match the location and the season. “We knew we wanted to get married in spring or summer,” Carole Anne says. “But we had to wait for the snow to run off”

Star Gazers: A telescope added a homey touch among the lounge pieces for guests to view the stars. Truck Stop: The couple knew they wanted to feature the truck that featured prominently in their engagement. A “Just Married” banner and some greenery from the reception adorned the back, and sparklers made for a picture-perfect moment. Something Old and Blue: A ribbon on the bride’s bouquet was actually fabric from her mom’s wedding dress. The embroidery featured Carole Anne’s new name and wedding date.

<< Seasonal Sips: The signature drink, a Mayers Mule, featured an Aspen tree–print paper straw. “It was just a time for our guests to take in the view; the sun was just starting to set,” Carole Anne recalls of cocktail hour.

<< Tiers of Joy: The couple chose a traditional vanilla bride’s cake and chocolate groom’s cake, but as for the design, Carole Anne was inspired by clean lines with simple touches. “I really wanted to bring the florals into the cake, to have that touch that ties everything together,” she says.

So Clutch: Though he may look comfortable behind the wheel of this 1961 Chevrolet Corvette, Nathan had to receive a little help to drive their rented getaway car, which was a standard transmission. “His groomsman was on the side coaching him,” Amanda says with a laugh while recalling their send-off.

Amanda McLachlan Nathan Jones November 7, 2020

Amanda McLachlan had long thought pal Nathan Jones was “dreamy.” But it wasn’t until a confession of love by Nathan that the two went from friends to something more. Two years later, Nathan took Amanda on a scavenger hunt through special shared spots in Dallas, ending in a proposal. For Amanda, an event planner by trade, planning her wedding “was like my Super Bowl.” She quickly got to work bringing her vision to life with the help of planner Leslie Ochs of Alice and Apricot, and after a four-month engagement, Amanda and Nathan tied the knot in front of 70 of their nearest and dearest. Remembers the bride: “We felt super blessed to have

<<

a night under the stars with all our close friends and family.” —Maddie Jewesson

Ladies in Black: From the start, Amanda had the idea for her wedding party to dress in all black, but she didn’t have strong feelings about the style of her bridesmaids’ dresses, telling her attendants, “Go out, and pick the dress you feel the most sexy and comfortable in.”

Guests:

70 Guest Book: An LP of Justin Timberlake's Man of the Woods album—a nod to one of their early dates to see Timberlake in concert Signature Cocktails: Blood orange kombucha and Topo Chico with lime <<

On the Waterfront: “I’d always dreamed of a fall wedding, outside, by the water, under the lights,” says Amanda, who’d dreamt of marrying in Italy. “Knowing that with COVID it was going to be local, we wanted to get as close to that as possible.”

80

Music Matters: Through their invitations, the music-loving couple paid homage to Nathan's hometown of Tupelo, Mississippi—which is also the birthplace of Elvis Presley—with stamps bearing the The King's likeness.

Paint It Black: The black-and-white color palette was a non-comprisable aspect for Amanda. “I wanted to make it so simple and classic, so I could look back on my photos and still have it look good,” Amanda says. Black chargers topped with white round menu cards were designed to resemble a record. For the Record: Music played a central role in Amanda and Nathan’s love story, so they highlighted their passion in every detail of the wedding, including vinyl escort cards and a Justin Timberlake LP standing in for a traditional guest book.

<< The Icing on the Cake: Of Amanda and Nathan’s desire for a black cake, planner Leslie Ochs remembers, “We asked multiple bakers, and they said no.” They eventually enlisted SusieCakes to bake her dream sleek black cake.

A Walk to Remember: “He custom wrote the ceremony for us,” Amanda says of her father, a minister, who presided over the ceremony. He also performed a song he'd written for Amanda's mother when he proposed exactly 40 years, to the day, earlier. << Platinum Album: When choosing a wedding photographer, Amanda and Nathan wanted to pick someone whom they could trust to capture the intimate moments of their wedding day in an artful way. “We wanted something we could put up as art in our home after the wedding,” she says of choosing The Brothers Martens. Hand in Hand: Even though their special day may not have transpired exactly as they’d planned, Sarah and Swayze’s dual celebrations made for beautiful memories. Planner Whitney Bailey of Engaged Events says, “We truly felt like the end result was exactly what Sarah and Swayze envisioned.”

<< Garden Party: Sarah and Swayze’s wedding reception had been a year in the making, so they wanted their colorful floral invitations to deliver (in more ways than one).

<< Flower Bomb: “Sarah shared with me her inspirational photos of wildflower fields, long farm tables, and a dessert table,” remembers Whitney. Adds Sarah: “I wanted it to be bright and beautiful to feel like a celebration of being able to get together at the end of so much isolation.”

<< Fashion Plates: In her early adulthood, Sarah fondly recalls collecting mixand-match dish wear, which is why she was elated to find these floral porcelain plates from Posh Couture Rentals. “I loved that look,” she says.

REAL WEDDINGS

Courtney Sobek Cole Tachdjian April 10, 2021 Courtney Sobek and Cole Tachdjian were just two highschool sweethearts from California when a brokendown bus landed them stuck in Texas for three weeks. “We were on a road trip to see George Strait,” Courtney says. “We rented a car and drove across Texas and fell in love.” The couple, who rescue and rehabilitate horses, decided to split their business between the two states. So following a birthday-weekend engagement in Laguna Beach, it just made sense to

Oh Hay There: Courtney ditched her ceremony overskirt and added a leather belt and turquoise necklace for the reception. “I wanted to cowgirl up a little bit,” she says. Cole surprised her with sparklers to start the reception off with a bang. The newlywed pair entered the haybarn first so they could watch their bridal-party members do their entrances. “We did it in reverse,” says Courtney.

marry on their property in Palmer. “Cole is more Texan than a lot of people,” Courtney laughs. After a yearlong postponement due to the Two of a Kind: The couple opted to do a first look. “It gives you a private moment to be together,” says Courtney. “More than anything, while I was getting ready, I just wanted to see Cole. I love my friends, but I just couldn’t wait to see him!”

pandemic, the pair said “I do” amid the springtime Texas bluebonnets. —Sarah Bennett

<<

Rustic Chic: Courtney wanted to bring the outdoors into the haybarn for the reception. GRO Designs more than delivered, with trees adding height and punctuating the space. Wood tables were topped with lush centerpieces, while large chandeliers lent an elegant air.

Fields of Blue: Courtney loved taking some shots with the drone owned by her photographer, Menary Weddings, to capture the full field of bluebonnets in bloom. “The photographer was scared to ask me if I wanted to do that, but I’m a cowgirl,” she says. “I don’t mind getting dirty.”

Setting the Scene: Cow troughs were placed all around the cocktail-hour area to house flowers and ice-cold beers—in keeping with the mix of aesthetic elegance and a comfortable feel.

Happy Trail(er)s: Cattle trailers were used to transport guests to and from the ceremony. “We decided to use what we had at the ranch,” Courtney says. “The wedding was on a hill, and we didn’t want people to hike up there. So we decided a hayride was kind of fun.”

Tag, You’re It: Using cattle tags for escort cards was Courtney’s idea. She then found an artist on Etsy who could make them customized for her. “I wanted it to be a takeaway gift to use again and remind them of the ranch,” she says.

<< Party On: Late in the evening, the bride donned a bedazzled white “Forever & Ever” jacket from Rock Paper Scissors Denim Jackets. “We tricked everyone into thinking it was over, and then revealed a dueling piano bar,” says Courtney, who’s pictured taking a turn on the suspended saddle used by the aerialist entertainer.

On Brand: The couple branded a piece of leather during their ceremony. “It’s a symbol of us—a symbol of our unity together,” Courtney says. <<

Deep in the Heart: “I love Texas in the spring, and I love nature, so I wanted something to echo that,” Courtney says of her bouquet. Around the stems, she placed a hand-tooled leather wrap featuring the bride’s new initials and wedding date, as well as photos of loved ones who have passed away, including Cole’s dad and Courtney’s grandmother.

<<

Neon Moon: “Cole grew up in the hot rod industry, and his dad collected neon signs,” Courtney explains. “So we got that sign made for our ranch.” The hay bale display also served as a photo-booth spot at the afterparty.

Tall Order: Stilted entertainers and a trick roper welcomed guests to the cocktail hour. “We didn’t want it to be cookie cutter,” says the bride. “We wanted unique things personal to us, and to make sure people had a drink and entertainment.”

The One: “I looked online at probably 800 venues in Texas, and I finally found the Hillside Estate,” says Mackenzie. The only problem? It wasn’t built yet. “But as soon as we met the owner, Brittney, and saw the windows in the chapel, we were sold. It was the first and only venue that we physically toured.”

Playing Favorites: While gown shopping at Bridal Boutique of Lewisville, Mackenzie’s stylist noted that nine of the 10 gowns she pulled were by Pronovias. In the end, she chose an off-the-shoulder column gown by the Spanish designer.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Indeed, after seeing a photo of Mackenzie Grumbine on a pal’s phone, Evan Pettit asked the

mutual friend to set them up. The pair dated long distance through college and eventually got engaged in Arches National Park. Having spent years as a bridal model, Mackenzie was ready to play the part for real—but choosing the right vendors to bring her unconventional sense of style to life was critical. Of her Parisian-inspired venue choice and unique floral color palette, she says, “I wanted to feel like I was frolicking

So Inviting: “Since floral and color were a huge part of the wedding, I wanted that to show in the invites,” says planner Alexa Kay of Alexa Kay Events. Funky Florals: Florist Jesse Camargo of Flo.ReaL introduced Mackenzie to ikebana— the Japanese art of flower arranging that focuses on lines and color. “We decided to keep it minimal so the flowers could be appreciated,” says Jesse. The head table had both ikebana arrangements (left) and bud vases (right) running down the center. “It basically looked like a little flower dance down the table,” he remembers.

JUST MARRIED

Harrison Edell Michael Mahon November 23, 2019

He Said/He Said

Had you thought about your wedding day before getting engaged?

Michael: Definitely! We knew we wanted to share the day with our friends and family, in an outdoor venue that was sentimental to us. Harrison: Well before our engagement, we knew how we wanted our wedding to feel: intimate, outdoors, classy without being stuffy.

What was the smartest thing you did while planning your wedding?

Michael: We involved our friends and family in the planning and preparations. They’re a big part of our lives, so we valued their input. Harrison: We involved friends and family in various aspects of the wedding planning. When it was time to create music playlists, we held a playlist party. Family weighed in on key decisions and helped prepare our home for the event: arranging flowers, cre-

ating centerpieces, and ironing pocket squares.

What was the most fun part of wedding planning?

Michael: Decorating and preparing our home to welcome our 125 guests. Harrison: Tasting cake.

What was the hardest part?

Michael: Deciding on a menu. Harrison: It was tough at times to find our respective voices. While Michael and I both wanted to honor one another’s choices/preferences, it was also important to find ways to share our own opinions openly, whether we were discussing the table settings, signature cocktails, music or wedding cake.

Was there anything your spouse wanted that you weren’t sure about?

Michael: I’m sure there was, but nothing comes to mind at

the moment. Luckily we have similar taste, which made planning much easier. Harrison: Michael loves cake. When we couldn’t choose only one, Michael suggested we serve three varieties. Totally the correct decision, by the way.

What would you do differently if you had to do it all over again? Michael: It was a nearly perfect evening. I wish we hired a videographer to document the evening so we could share it with those who could not attend, and so we could occasionally watch footage and reminisce about our special day. Harrison: I think we might have needed a fourth cake: our guests chowed down!

What was your biggest takeaway from the wedding-planning process?

Michael: Don’t plan the wedding according to what you

Michael (left) and Harrison, Fall 2021

think your guests want—plan it for exactly how you want it. So many of our guests commented on how the decor, the food, the music, etc. was exactly to our taste, which made the event so much more intimate and authentic. Harrison: Have fun with the process, and don’t take it too seriously. Make the event yours: Wear the suit you love, select centerpieces you like, splurge on the good bourbon, and serve all three cakes instead of settling for just one.

What was the most memorable moment from your wedding day?

Michael: Our officiant, who is a close friend of ours, had Harrison and I turn away from our guests during the ceremony. With our eyes closed, he asked everyone to stand up and hold out their arms in our direction as a symbol of love and support. We turned and opened our eyes and the tears started pouring out. It was such a

special act to witness—feeling the love and support of our nearest and dearest. Harrison: Our officiant prepared an outstanding ceremony and asked our guests to participate. To open our eyes, to see so many friends and family demonstrating their support, arms outstretched, was incredibly impactful and profound.

If you had one piece of advice for engaged or newly married couples, what would it be?

Michael: Don’t feel rushed to make “the big day” happen right away. Take time to plan for how to make it your own. Harrison: Go easy on yourselves; nobody knows how to be the perfect spouse intuitively, not every day will be perfect, and all of that is OK. Talk about imperfections, embrace the difficult conversations when they happen, and be sure not to beat yourselves up. Marriage is a process.

On November 23, 2019, before at-home weddings became a pandemic standard, Michael Mahon, a real estate agent, and Harrison Edell, the Chief Mission Officer for the Dallas Zoo, said “I do” at their Oak Cliff abode. (Their celebration was featured in the Spring/Summer 2021 issue of D Weddings.) In preparation for the big event, the pair put plenty of sweat equity into their home, which proved an auspicious investment for the year-plus quarantine that would begin just four months later. “COVID threw a wrench in many of the things we love the most, including travel and time with friends,” Harrison says. “But we spent the last year making the best of time at home: landscaping, swimming, home improvements, and trying new recipes.” Though married life doesn’t feel much diffe ent, Michael says, “It’s nice to have a partner in these challenging times.” They tell us the best and hardest parts of wedding planning—and why more cake is always the right answer. —Jessica Otte
