The monu mental challenges schools, administrators, and teachers faced—and overcame—to ensure learning continued during the pandemic has been nothing short of incredible. Even as the pandemic slows down, the future of education continues to grab headlines. As a result, schools and fami lies have taken a deeper, more comprehensive look into what students need as they return to the classroom, knowing the back-and-forth between virtual and classroom learning, mask wearing, and the loss of a traditional schoolday routine has taken its toll on many students.
Once the decision has been made that a private school education is the best option for your child, the next step is finding the right fit. The road between choosing a school, and that school’s acceptance, can be a stressful one. Available spots in Dallas area private schools are limited this year due to increased demand. Understanding how the private school admission and acceptance processes work has become more important than ever.
“We love for families to go to campuses and spend time getting to know the staff and meet
The admission process for private schools in Dallas-Fort Worth can feel overwhelming without some sort of road map—this is where admission consultants and testing and place ment advisors come in. For years, the top advice consultants have given to families is to tour the schools and attend open houses, as this is the best way to get a feel for a school and see if it could be a good fit. However, the COVID-19 pandemic took this in-person visit option off the table, making it even more difficult for fam ilies to navigate their decision-making process.
Wilson says admission consultants through out the Dallas area, Texas, and beyond were concerned they wouldn’t have a business any more due to COVID-19. If kids were staying home to learn, families didn’t need guidance on how to apply to a private school. However, business at Perfect Placement has been busier than ever. “Whether families are new to the private school admission process or families are new to Dallas, they still aren’t sure where to start,” she says. “And we have helped families who felt frustrated with how the pandemic was being handled in public schools find a welcome change for their children at a private school.”

The decision between a public and private education for children is something thousands of families throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area face every year. For many, both options are stellar, and the decision is only a matter of preference. For some, having a child with learn ing differences is the reason to choose a private school. Or it may be decision about legacy, where generations of family members have attended the same private school. The choice to attend public school could be a financial one, or it’s possibly more convenient. Whatever the reason, Dallas-Fort Worth families have plenty of desirable options.
The pandemic has been a catalyst for some families to consider switching from public to private schools. After having their children at home for a year or more in virtual learning, some parents picked up on cues their children could benefit from a change in their education. Waverly Wilson, lead admission consultant with Perfect Placement in Dallas, says this, plus an influx of people moving to the Dallas area from out of state, have created a higher demand for private education. This has made the private school application process more competitive than it has been in the past. “There aren’t more schools here, and there aren’t more open spots, but there are more applicants,” Wilson says. “Local private schools already had a large application season before COVID-19 hit, and then it became even more difficult. Generally, applications increase a little each year, but in the past two years they have gone up significantly because of families coming in from out of state. Either their children were in private schools before coming to Dallas, or they have decided it is the best option for them here.”

I meet with families to get a sense of what they are looking for and what their child is like, then other families whose children attend,” Wilson says. “With COVID-19, this was difficult to do, as most schools either canceled or limited those opportunities because only children who already attended the school were allowed on campus. During the height of the pandemic, most of the admission process was done remotely, and families had to make decisions based on what they could see via Zoom. Cam puses have been able to increasingly open to visitors and I anticipate campuses will be fully open next year.”
Although admission to a Dallas area pri vate may be more challenging this year, there are still some seats to fill. Fortunately, local admission consultants can help you make the right decision for your child’s individual needs and navigate the private school process from application to acceptance. And, from attend ing private school previews and visiting open houses to interviewing current students and their families, there are plenty of opportunities to help you obtain the information you need to feel confident you have made the right choice.
Eleanor Munson, Ph.D., owner of Dallas Educational Consultants, began consulting with families on admission to private schools and to colleges decades ago. With so many options, finding the right school can become a dizzying challenge, she says. Much of her work involves helping families make the match between school and child. Says Munson, “I often work with families, either from the Dallas area or new to Dallas, who are not familiar with the many private school options that are available.
As difficult as having limited access to school campuses has been, one bright spot that came from the pivot to virtual tours and appoint ments is online admissions testing. “A lot of the larger private schools in the Dallas area have switched to remote admissions testing,” Wilson says. “What many schools discovered is that this was actually better for the families and the schools. Now, when students visit the campus, they have more time to tour and visit with the staff, and teachers and staff have more time to see the children in a classroom setting rather than spend valuable time and energy with on-site testing. It’s been a very positive change.”

Some of the families Munson assists feel stuck because they are finding it difficult to make the decision between a public educa tion and a private education, especially if the public school where they live is highly ranked. To make this initial decision, it usually comes down to a few key things. “I think people who want a private school are looking for smaller class sizes, rigorous course work, specialized enrichment and extracurricular opportunities, and an intense focus on preparing students for college,” Munson says. “Families interested in private schools place the highest priority on their child’s education, so students are with a group of students who really value academic achievement. Private school students, in gen eral, are more connected with faculty and have the ability, if needed, for remediation or accel eration in a particular area. Because there are fewer students in a private schools, teachers and staff are often more able to meet a variety of individual needs.”

Wilson says parents are often relieved to have a third-party admission consultant step in, as sometimes, students can drag their feet on admission applications and decision mak ing when their to-do lists are already overloaded with school and extra-curricular activities. “Par ents are often happy to see that their kids will listen to me when I make suggestions about schools and essay or interview tips. Simply put, I’m not mom or dad,” she says. “I think the biggest value-add private school consultants provide to families is that when they enter the admission process, whether they are from Dal las or out of state, we can help them eliminate the stress that accompanies this decision.”

The Dallas area has always had a large appli cant pool for private schools; it’s competitive because the private schools here are well-re spected and highly valued. “Families enter the admission process feeling overwhelmed as they enter such a big applicant pool,” Wilson says. “Maybe they were already stressed from feeling their children’s school wasn’t serving their needs as well as other options might. And once they see what great options the Dallas area has available, it’s easy to get excited about it, which can add more stress. Admission consultants can help families sort through their many options for pub lic and private school and identify what might be the best fit, assisting them with narrowing the process so they feel well informed and confident about making a good decision for their child.”
Wilson says for many families, the choice comes down to a smaller class size and the close-knit feel of a private school that are dif ficult to achieve in large public school setting. “Smaller classes can often offer opportunities to go deeper into subject matter, to have more opportunities to work on the writing process, and to do collaborative work in teams as well as more opportunities to practice oral presen tation skills in class,” Wilson says. “All these experiences translate into strong college read inessBothskills.”Wilson and Munson believe that know ing your child and how he or she learns is the best piece of information to have when find ing the right school. For instance, your child may be very bright, but not a fast processor. A competitive school where the curriculum is fast paced may not be the right choice. For a slow processor, curriculums that involve teach ing a concept and quickly moving on to the next can potentially leave that student behind. “The child will be overloaded and stressed just keeping their head above water,” Munson says. “Part of my work is helping parents be realistic about their children’s strengths and weaknesses. A lot of people want a prestigious name or a well-known school—but that may not be where their child will truly thrive. You want a school where your child feels safe and comfortable, where they feel like they can take risks in and out of the classroom.” There are several school accreditation groups common to Dallas area private schools, including National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS), and National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).
Whether or not you enlist professional help in your private school search, the answer about which type of school and which school is best is usually discovered through parent’s intu ition. Says Wilson, “Lean on your instincts as a parent. Sometimes the answer comes from narrowing your options from the many good options and making a gut-level choice.”
