The path to finding the right private school for your child starts here. BY J ENNIFER SANDER HAYES

Once the decision has been made that a private school education is the right option for your child, the next choice is deciding which private school is the best fit. You may have some favorites in mind, but the road from your decision to a school’s acceptance can be a winding one without the proper knowledge about how the private school application process works.

fortunately, there are local experts who can help you make the right choice for your family’s needs and assist with navigating the process. And, private school staff members and educators can always lend their advice. From attending private school previews, visiting open houses, and interviewing current students and their families to seeking the help of a professional admission consultant, there are plenty of avenues to help you attain the information you need so that you can make the best fit between student and school. For some families, the choice between a private school education and a public school education is clear; parents knew which path their children would take before they were ever born. For other families, making the decision can be a struggle, especially when both options are attractive or when trying to decide which school is best meets their child’s specific needs. Of all the choices parents must make for their children, education is one that often gets analyzed and debated the most. After all, children spend more time at school than they do at home. This is where their educational foundation begins, where friendships are formed, and where they take the first steps toward carving their life’s path. Waverly Wilson, lead admission consultant with Perfect Placement in Dallas, says determining the best fit should be based on who your child is now and who he or she will be in the next few years. “Choose the school that you can genuinely be excited about dropping your child off at on the first day of school,” Wilson says. “One where you can see them loving being a part of that school’s community. Talk to friends about the schools their children attend, but make the decision

based on what feels right for your unique and amazing child. Remember, there are usually several schools that are a good fit for your child.” Eleanor Munson, Ph.D., owner of Dallas Educational Consultants, began consulting with families on admission to private schools years ago. With so many options, finding the right school can become a dizzying challenge. A school may be perfect for one of your children, but not the best option for another for a variety of reasons. “Most of my work involves helping families make the match between school and child,” she says. “I often work with families, either from the Dallas area or new to Dallas, who are not familiar with the many private schools options that are available. I meet with families to get a sense of what they are looking for and what their child is like, then make recommendations of schools to consider. Once they decide, I guide them through the admission process, which these days can be like applying to college in many ways.” Some of the families Munson assists feel stuck because they are finding it difficult to make the decision between a public education and a private education, especially if the public school where they live is highly ranked. To make this initial decision, it usually comes down to a few key areas.

“AT AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL, YOU WILL FIND AN ENVIRONMENT THAT NURTURES INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY, CRITICAL THINKING, LEADERSHIP, AND INNOVATION. INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS ARE COMMITTED TO PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH AN EDUCATION OF THE WHOLE CHILD THAT WILL HELP THEM DEVELOP BOTH AS STUDENTS AND AS INDIVIDUALS.” JENNIFER MEYERS, PRESIDENT OF THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ADMISSION ASSOCIATION OF DALLAS (ISAAD)

“You want a school where your child feels safe and comfortable, where they feel like they can take risks in and out of the classroom.” ELEANOR MUNSON, PH.D., DALLAS EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANTS

“EVERYONE HAS A TOP CHOICE. THAT DOES NOT MEAN IT IS THE ONLY SCHOOL AT WHICH YOUR STUDENT WILL BE HAPPY AND SUCCESSFUL! MAKE SURE YOU ALSO HAVE A PLAN B AND PLAN C THAT YOU CAN BE GENUINELY HAPPY ABOUT.” WAVERLY WILSON, PERFECT PLACEMENT

188

“I think parents who want a private school are looking for a couple of things—much smaller class sizes, rigorous course work, specialized enrichment and extracurricular opportunities, and an intense focus on preparing students for college,” Munson says. “Families interested in private schools place the highest priority on their child’s education, so students have a peer group who really values academic achievement. Students, in general, are more connected with faculty and have the ability, if needed, for remediation or acceleration in a particular area. Because there are fewer students in private schools, teachers and staff are often more able to meet a variety of individual needs.” Wilson says for many families, the choice comes down to a smaller class size and the close-knit feel of a private school that are difficult to achieve in large public school setting. “Smaller classes can often offer opportunities to go deeper into subject matter, to have more opportunities to work on the writing process, and to do collaborative work in teams as well as more opportunities to practice oral presentation skills in class,” Wilson says. “All these experiences translate into strong college readiness skills.” Both Wilson and Munson say that knowing your child and how he or she learns is the best piece of information to have when finding the right school. For instance, your child may be very bright, but not a fast processor. A competitive school where the curriculum is fast paced may not be the right choice. For a slower processor, curriculums that involve teaching a concept and quickly moving on to the next can potentially leave that student behind. “Part of my work is helping parents be realistic about their children’s strengths and weaknesses,” Munson says. “A lot of people want a prestigious name or a well-known school—but that may not be where their child will truly thrive. You want a school where your child feels safe and comfortable, where they feel like they can take risks in and out of the classroom. A competitive school where the curriculum

is very advanced and fast-paced may not be the right choice. The child will be overloaded and stressed, just keeping their head above water,” Munson says. To get started in your search, first consider the basics—location, cost, single-sex or co-ed, and religious affiliation (if any.) Determine what is most important to your family and which factors are non-negotiables. Like most things, a good place to begin the information gathering process is with a simple internet search. Visit dallasprivateschool.org, which is a site run by the Independent Schools Admission Association of Dallas (ISAAD). You can click on “school search” to find schools according to your selection criteria. Niche.com is another helpful site because it provides rankings, report cards, and reviews of schools in the U.S. from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Next, make a plan to visit the annual Private School Preview, usually held at a private school in the Dallas area in September. It’s a school fair put on by the 16 members of the Independent School Admission Association of Dallas. Finally, follow the schools that interest you on their social media platforms to see how they “speak” to their own community versus selling you on what they want their potential families to see. “When looking for a private school, start by delving into school websites,” Munson advises. “Typically, you can find the curriculum guide for each grade, the enrichment activities (clubs, sports, etc.), college acceptances, and more. My best advice is to tour the school during the week when school is in session. You know your child, and you’ll have a sense of whether or not you can see them in that particular school environment.” The next step is touring schools and visiting with current families and students to get a first-hand report of their experiences. Admission cycles typically start one year prior to the start of school, so it is a good idea to start the touring and admissions process at least one year out. Some schools also have rolling admission, meaning they will consider new students whenever there are openings. For most private schools, admission usually opens around Labor Day and runs through December or January. Campus tours and events are held for prospective parents during this time at each school. It’s important to begin the search early, as delays can land you on a school’s waiting list. Families can typically expect an offer of enrollment the Friday before spring break. Parents often find the paperwork, testing, and interview process to be overwhelming

READY TO APPLY? Consider the following questions to ask and things to look for when you begin touring private schools.

10 QUESTIONS TO ASK: 01. What is your school’s philosophy and vision/ mission?

02. What curriculum do you use that will give your child a well-rounded education?

03.

faculty in passing, how or if student work hung on the walls or in a classroom, the physical set up of a classroom and desks, and how technology is used (or not used). Pay attention to “unrehearsed moments.” Do students and staff look happy to be there?

Does this school value the parents’ involvement and interest to volunteer?

Observe how the staff and students engage with you during your stay?

04.

Ask to meet other key people in the school other than the admissions team.

What does the cost of tuition include?

05. What measures of security do you have in place at your school?

06. How do you integrate faith into the classroom?

07. How does your school prepare students for college—not just academics?

08. How does your school implement differentiated learning?

09. How much focus is placed on homework vs. in-class and experiential learning?

10. May I visit with a current family at this school?

TOURING TIPS: Visit a school during school hours on a regular day. It is helpful to observe classrooms, the playground, lunchrooms and to meet any teachers or staff. Notice how the tour guide interacts with students and

compared to what is required to enroll in a public school—another reason to start early. When searching for a school, there are key criteria to research that shouldn’t be overlooked, such as checking a school’s accreditation credentials, testing requirements, and cost/scholarship opportunities. First, accreditation: Says Wilson, “It is important to know whether a school is accredited or not, and if not, why not. Accreditation can be very important because it provides accountability for the quality of curriculum, facilities, faculty, and education provided by a school.” There are several school accreditation groups common to Dallas area private schools, including National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS), and National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). Some smaller preschools have chosen to not go through an accreditation process because they already go through a rigorous licensing process by the State of Texas. Types of testing, testing requirements, and expectations vary among schools, and private schools typically require some form of testing prior to admittance. Many schools, but not all, require the ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) or other standardized tests. You can visit the ISEE website at iseetest.org for further information. The ISEE ranks each applicant’s reasoning and achievement skills among students in the same grade and

enables students to take a single test for entrance into top-performing independent schools. While the sticker price on a school’s tuition may be high enough to cross it off your list, don’t let it. Many private schools offer financial aid and scholarships to families who demonstrate need. When there’s a perfect fit, in many cases, a private school and family can work together to make it happen. Some schools offer tuition assistance, like a grant, that doesn’t have to be repaid. The money for these grants comes directly from the school’s budget. Some schools offer monthly payment plans as well, allowing families to spread out their tuition payments. And occasionally, some private schools offer loan programs. Munson says some schools affiliated with churches often have lower tuition because the church/parish/diocese supports the school financially. “Apply for financial aid at private schools,” Wilson says. “For most schools, admission decisions and financial aid decisions are done independently of each other (need-blind admission), so you will not harm your child’s chances of being admitted by applying for financial aid. Parents should feel comfortable asking admissions counselors questions about financial matters, and about the school in general.” Overall, when making the decision, primarily lean on your instincts as a parent. Says Wilson, “Sometimes the answer comes from narrowing your options from the many good options and making a gut-level choice.” dmagazine.com August 2021

Fusion Academy A REVOLUTIONARY WAY TO SCHOOL

Quick Look

Fusion Academy is a fully accredited private middle and high school with a completely personalized approach. They’ve been changing lives for students and their families since 1989. Classes at Fusion are one-to-one: one student and one teacher per classroom. This allows teachers to personalize course content for each student’s strengths, interests, and learning style. Students come to Fusion for a myriad of reasons, but all have one thing in common—they aren’t thriving in their current school and need a more personalized environment. Fusion’s one-to-one approach is great for students who are gifted and need accelerated options, have ADD or ADHD and need a focused environment, have extracurricular pursuits and need a more flexible schedule, or need extra support in the classroom. Students may attend Fusion full-time for middle or high school, or supplement their education with classes for credit, tutoring, or post-secondary/college counseling. On each Fusion campus there are two Homework Café spaces: one quiet and one social. These spaces are not only for students to complete homework during their school day, but the Social Homework Café acts as the social hub of the campus. This is where student meetings occur, clubs meet, and more. The space is led by the director of Homework Café who is responsible for planning social programming around social emotional learning themes. Campuses plan events, such as prom, graduation, field trips, and more, so students get a full school experience in a personalized environment. Fusion students have been accepted to more than 200 unique colleges and universities, as well as international programs, gap year experiences, and more. Whatever a student’s desired path, Fusion works with them to achieve their goals.

Nolan Catholic High School EDUCATION IN FAITH, FORMATION IN HOPE, AND PERSEVERANCE IN CHARITY

Quick Look A DM ISSION

Nolan Catholic High School continues a tradition that began more than half a century ago: a ministry of the Diocese of Fort Worth providing a college-preparatory education and evangelizing students to be tomorrow’s servant leaders through education based in faith, formation based in hope, and perseverance in charity. Founded in 1961, Nolan Catholic’s storied history continues to evolve, grow, and move in exciting new directions. The school recently completed a $32 million enhancement, including updates to the existing main building, new classroom furniture, additional outdoor classrooms, a state-of-the-art natatorium, and an Integrated Design of Engineering and Arts (IDEA) building. A Nolan Catholic education engages students with a diverse, rigorous curriculum that spans across academic disciplines—a classical approach with a focus on grammar, logic, and rhetoric. A curriculum embedded into traditional studies allows for collaborative investigations needed for higher education experiences. Even more importantly, the Nolan Catholic experience helps students discover, nurture, and develop their unique, God-given talents. Students learn to succeed with grace, fail with dignity, and approach all challenges with humility. Nolan Catholic High School students are immediately recognizable as Christians through their acts of faith. The Nolan Catholic experience addresses the whole person with college-preparatory academics, an award-winning fine arts program, outdoor classrooms, championship-level athletics, innovative ecology and engineering programs, and more – all built on a foundation rooted in the Catholic faith. At Nolan Catholic, students are formed in the Gospel virtues of faith, hope, and charity to become lifelong learners in knowing, loving, and serving God. Nolan Catholic High School is accredited by the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops Education Department (TCCB ED), Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and AdvancED.

Cassata Catholic High School ANOTHER CHANCE AT SUCCESS

Founded in 1975, Cassata Catholic High School is a private, nonprofit outreach school in Fort Worth that is committed to providing young people with another chance at success. Rooted in Catholic values and guided by Christ’s teaching, Cassata is open to everyone. The student population is a microcosm of our larger society, with students coming from all faith, ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds, each with their own life story. Cassata meets each student where they have the most need and focuses to address the whole person—not just the academic side. While the common goal is for students to graduate successfully, Cassata also strives to attend to their spiritual, emotional, and material needs. Their individual success goes far beyond earned grades and credits. Cassata offers an individualized, self-paced curriculum; students receive syllabi that are designed to be completed in three, six, or nine weeks. This allows CCHS students to begin coursework based on their current level and work at a pace that is conducive to their success. Cassata’s unique educational model includes morning and afternoon sessions to ensure that students who may have health issues, participate in competitive sports, work, take care of a family member, or who are raising a child, can still attend school. Students can earn either a high school diploma under the Foundation (22 credits) or Foundation with Endorsement (26 credits) graduation plan or attend GED preparatory courses.

When you cross paths with students from The Oakridge School out in the community, you may notice something is different. Could it be they’re standing a little more confidently than others their age? Is it that they don’t shy away from speaking to adults? Something is different. It’s clear they respect others, they respect you, and they respect themselves. It’s the Oakridge way. Located in Arlington, the 100-acre campus is a 30-minute drive from downtown Dallas (with transportation options offered). The independent, college-preparatory school was established in 1979 and serves students, ages 3 through grade 12, in a challenging, nurturing, welcoming, and diverse environment. With a mission focused on inspiring students to seek their full potential in academics, the arts, and athletics, it’s no surprise that the more than 700 students feel capable and confident, whether performing at Carnegie Hall or inside the school’s Fine Arts Center, competing in one of the 15 sports offered, or utilizing new technologies to collaborate with students in Dallas-Fort Worth or around the world. They are encouraged to take risks, to fall forward, to be creative and curious, to lead and support, and to make a difference on campus and away from the classrooms. Now an eighth-grader, she has the tools and gifts to keep her on a successful path not only in her education, but in her life.” - Current St. Bernard Parent St. Bernard students learn to think critically, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively as they participate in a STEAM curriculum in the Maker Space and Robotics program, Spanish classes, a robust fine arts program, championship athletics, outdoor learning labs, and extracurricular clubs and activities. Call St. Bernard or visit their website to schedule a tour, connect with a current family, or learn more.
