PREFACE.

side of the line. It a source of regret to the writer that this friend

may not be mentioned by name in order that the readers of this volume might know to whom they are indebted for this last mentioned

labor.

The full texts of the inscriptions are not given, since this would

make the book too large and expensive. Care, however, has been taken to give the names, dates and ages correctly, and the book is

believed to be as free from errors as the average of such efforts. The

inscriptions from each burying ground are printed together, with a brief

description of their locality, and the condition of the headstones at the

present time.

The only index thought necessary is one giving the names and

localities of the several burying grounds. The names will be found in

alphabetical order.

It is hoped and expected that a sufficient number of books will be

sold to repay the cash outlay. The labor has been one of love, for

which no better remuneration is asked than that derived from the sat-

isfaction of being the means of preserving valuable records, which

would otherwise soon be lost entirely.

To some it is impossible to explain why such a work is undertaken,

but there are others who appreciate efforts of this kind. To the latter

class this book is respectfully dedicated.

L. VAN ALSTYNE,

Sharon, Conn.

THE SHARON BURYING GROUND.

The "Sharon Burying Ground," as originally laid out, is only

a small part of what has since been called " Hillside Cemetery." Just when it was first used for a burying ground, or from whom the land was purchased does not now appear.

The first entry in our first book of record reads :

" THE FIRST TOWN MEETING.

The Inhabitance of Sharon aplying Them Selves to the genral asembly in October Last Past for Town Priviledges Cap Dunham Was mad Choice of to Represent the Town to the Asembly to Warn the Inhabitance to meet to gather in order To Chuse town officers Which Being dune the Inhabitance being met on the ii Day of December In ye year 1739 at the house of Nath'U Skinner In Sharon And then

opened the meeting as the Law directs."

Among the recorded doings of the above said meeting is the following : " Nath Skinner and Lew Jabez Creppen chosen a Com'tt to Lay out A Beuring Place." If this committee made a report the records do not show it, but it is quite likely that the plot of ground at the north end of Sharon Street, now called the old part of the burying ground was the one laid out by the above said committee, and not long after the above said meeting.

From time to time, as necessity had called for it, the original plot

has been added to, until it has assumed its present proportions. It is

one of ten or more different places that either have been or are now used as places of burial in Sharon Township.

The site was well chosen, so well in fact that no one has been able

to suggest a better one. It is beautifully situated and admirably adapted to the use for which it was set apart. Until 1851 it was a grazing

ground for sheep, cattle and swine that ran in the streets. In that year the Sharon Burying Ground Association was organized, and the neat and well kept appearance of the cemetery is due to their efforts.
